Johnny Gill confirmed that his first and third albums were both named "Johnny Gill." He emphasized collaboration with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, as well as Babyface. It was this album that earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal performance. Greatly influenced by Luther Vandross, with whom he shared a close friendship, Gill spoke of Luther’s input into his artistry and storytelling skills. Referring to his own sexuality and speaking against homophobia, Gill dispelled rumors about his alleged sexual orientation and said that having shared such personal friendships enabled him to understand the trials faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. My first time hearing Johnny Gill speak on this issue. Some people said Johnny was gay because of his mannerisms, but despite the myth, feminine mannerisms or even cross dressing does not mean someone is gay. Patti Labelle did say she was a personal friend of Luther and that he was gay, but I remember hearing him sing live in a small theatre and the shock of hearing his voice, it was like magic to inexperienced ears. Whether he was gay matters not.
