While performing in Branson, Mo. I was honored and blest to meet Johny and share some experiences with one of my mandolin teachers the great Jethro Burns. Johny was one of the most personable and gracious "stars" of my acquaintance...

Johnny Gimble was a very gracious man, a true genius on the fiddle and mandolin, and had a wonderful sense of humor. I know he's in heaven's band, playing with Django, swinging away.

Johnny had a beautiful "sound" on his fiddle which made him so easy to listen to.

Truly a lovely man. He appeared in Georgetown, Tx at a fundraiser for a local non-profit not once, but twice. Such a nice man and his wife was just the same. I will never forget him and his gracious participation.

THANKS!!!! Johnny was as humble as he was great and he was the greatest ever! He was a man of true faith "in the One who makes everything possible" and was a true friend.

God asked JG to play the Lord"s Prayer.. and Johnny did it in 9ths , Augmented ,and diminished chords , with a bunch of double stops ....then Saint Peter told him to move on up beside Eldon and Smokey...
@CiscoDuck Жыл бұрын
@@pwea1anda294 Johnny was sure something else. He could play triple stops on that 5-string fiddle of his and at times he could get quads. Any chord you needed he could play it and modulate them as he harmonized the scale within any melodic passage. I never got a chance to play with him in person (he did overdub on a mandolin tune I sent him) but he beat all I ever saw or seen or ever heard. Probably he was one of the best friends I ever had. They don't grow 'em like him anymore.

Johnny Gimble was on the same playing level as Stephane Grappelli. R.I.P. to two amazing fiddlers.

Yes, he was! He could also swing like Svend Asmussen, Joe Venuti and Stuff Smith. Johnny loved all of those guys. I have jam tapes of him playing along with some Abersold back tracks on jazz standards like 'Avalon', 'After You've Gone', 'Poor Butterfly', 'Rose Room' and many other great tunes that he sent me - playing some real HOT fiddle stuff most people never knew he could play.

What Kind of Bowing is Johnnie using on, "What a friend we have in Jesus"? I have never seen it before.
@reidfisher547 Жыл бұрын
Very cool. I think he undid the frog, looped it over the fiddle, then reattached. More slack than my bow would have though. Anybody know what he tuned the open strings to (I'm assuming that's his 5-string fiddle)?
@CiscoDuck Жыл бұрын
@@reidfisher547 Not sure what they call that kind of playing, but Joe Venuti did it way back in the 20's and 30's which is where Johnny got it. He is playing his 5-string fiddle - standard violin tuning with that low 'C' on the bottom to get the range of a viola. He told me once in a humorous aside, "I'm at home on that range!" LOL!

Who are the guys, look like brothers, on the George Jones segment? On Telecaster and steel. They look familiar, can't place them.

The bald headed well dressed well groomed gentleman with a goatee? Pete Fountain first seen on the Laurence Welk Show here in L.A. As a kid I didn't like the 'champaine (sic) music', until the band did a tribute to some other great music maker.

Great presentation! Except for the "GOD" reference. What's superstition got to do with it?
