Johnny's 2 minute guitar solo at around 3m15secs sends shivers up my spine... If that's not channelling something spiritual from another DIMENSION, I dont know what is...

What's genius about Marr's playing is that he plays lead and rhythm lines at the same time.

Clarifications: 1. Johnny Marr wrote this song, "Getting Away with It" with Bernard Sumner when the two formed Electronic. 2. Johnny Marr was the chief songwriter of the Smiths. He wasn't Morrissey's guitarist. They're bandmates in an equal collaboration. If anything, I would say that Johnny did most of the heavy lifting as the songwriter. 3. I've seen Johnny Marr in concert, and he is a genius rock guitarist.

I think you'll find Morrissey was the songwriter and Johnny did the music.

Did you mean that Morrissey was the lyricist & topliner? Both Marr & Morrissey acknowledged that Morrissey wrote most of the Smiths' lyrics.

This is the best live performance I've ever seen, not just the quality of playing and choice of FX, but the whole mood and tone. Its perfection perfected. Their stage presence, the colour of Johnny's Jag, the lights, the shadows, the silver nail varnish and not to mention that drum roll on the outtro. There's no thorn in this bands side, they're exactly where they want and need to be. Hats off.

if I could have a fraction of johnny marr's talent....I'm not sure if I would share it with you all......I'd just smoke weed all day & play concerts for myself....an untouchable guitar player in my opinion

he looks pretty transported when he plays it. it must be awesome to love the things you write that much. still wish he could hit the high notes in the chorus, though.

He seems to have trouble hitting the low notes too. He's one of the best guitarists IMO, for being so (relatively) understated of a player. Not one of the best singers, for sure.

It's a really difficult song to sing if you haven't got the range. I try every time I hear it and fail miserably, but thankfully nobody is listening...... I think Johnny did pretty well myself.

I cannot believe I just found this so long after it was performed. I always loved the original with Bernard Sumner vocals, but I dunno ... Marr's voice just seems to suit the words better now I have listened to it a few times.

I managed to catch JM and his band in'15 twice about 10 days apart, first in Wakefield ,West Yorkshire (where I'm from) , then in Fremantle Western Australia (where I now live) . I managed to talk to the band in Freo after the gig and told them, like an excited school kid. I was half pissed. They looked at me like I was some fucking nutter 😆 Love 'em. There's only one Johnny Marr! (Oh yeah, and I proudly wore my 'Johnny Fuckin Marr ' t shirt at the Freo gig. )

This is one of the greatest band's for a long time to come around I'd love to catch a live show before I die which isn't too far off unfortunately. Oh well maybe the choir of angels will be this great. I know they will be.

Johnny is massively underrated as a singer, an absolutely blinding guitarist. Makes this song his own, also discovered it purely accidentally

This is a revelation. So great to see the song as performed and presented by one of the original Electronic, with Johnny, as lead guitarist and vocalist here, interpreting Getting Away With It with the harmonics of his guitar replacing any vocal harmonies one is expecting with the phrase "getting away with it all my life." His vocals are so different than the original, yet more personal and soulful. And his guitar-work in their extended passages, replace vocal sections and speak the heart's feelings that this song's lyrics convey. I also wish to applaud the professionalism the entire band presents in the pureness of the musicianship and unadorned demeanor.
