Seeing johnny Marr mess up is the most encouraging thing. Like even geniuses miss a note every now and then

Everyone messes up often. That's why there's such a thing as rehearsal. By the time we get to hear any finished record or performance I'm sure the performer has fucked up numerous times. Johnny Marr is no different.

He's a total genius. In the multitrack you can hear him play this and it sounds like he's a fucking computer. And in those days (early 80s) they recorded to tape, not a chance to correct note by note, autotune, or the like. He rules.
@stockmanager8 жыл бұрын
Fer Abra its still pretty much the same today its totally obvious if some cuts a guitar lead together. The notes blend together when playing which would be pretty much impossible to cut on a pc , also autotune is for vocals not guitar.
@ferabra89398 жыл бұрын
FLORIDA Actually, I have used autotune on guitars with very good results. Today you can move things around to tighten up a performance, or comp a guitar solo from many takes very easily, which could be done on tape, but it was time consuming and studio time was a luxury. In the 80s one had to actually play well. With a genius as Marr I guess recording was pretty straightforward.
@stockmanager8 жыл бұрын
i guess thats true but hacks have always been in the music industry , there's is alot of good guitarists today such as mac demarco who uses multi-tracking, a guess i wish people would give newer music more attention than constantly talking about the smiths or the beatles don't get me wrong both a great bands but its over exposure kinda steals the potential audience from newer artists in the same vain.
@ferabra89398 жыл бұрын

Johnny Marr knows how to make his guitar sing. In addition to just writing one of the best indie rhythm riffs, he's also got just the right settings on it... notice how even the place where he slips up and misses that note, if anything it sounds like a person swallowing mid-sentence. So fucking genius. I would never think to do that, or be able to. I've written songs with chord changes, and then had a "riff" I wrote that would go over it, like Day Tripper or I feel Fine, to use the beatles as an example, but never something that seems so bizarre and I can't see how it fits into that chord progression... but it does perfectly. I guess I'm saying I wouldn't know how to bounce around all over the neck like that, and make it fit perfectly into the chords... unless I was just soloing, which is totally different. Bravo to Marr. What talent.

Completely agree, but I guess that shows what areas we are neglecting no? It's safe to assume you most likely play lead more-so, if you were a rhythm player you might give more attention/creativity to rhythm and you'd probably naturally start moving around. I know that me personally I need to start playing more rhythm, also it helps to grab an acoustic or even a clean electric or nylon classical and fingerpick some rhythm/lead to get you in the feel for making rhythm/riffs and melodies. You can also do simple bass notes on the lower strings and just drone them so you can practice making riffs and melodies higher up on the neck while droning a bass note (which kinda acts like a chord in this regard cuz you can play the leads over it) and if you need to tune the lower strings differently to make droning the bass for your chord progression easier feel free- allll that said, I agree, it's still genius and I dunno about you but I still wouldn't be coming up wirrh something like this
