The 40's were a tough time. World War with every first world country involved. Mass conscription for most English speaking countries and consequent battle deaths. Medicine wasn't that evolved. Disruptions and rationing in everyday lives.

Ever read the US Constitution, sure, have you? Also, I read the 2nd & 14 Amendments among others. BTW, don't overly glorify those who served at any given time. From 1940 until about 1973, the majority in the Army were conscripted (drafted). Some volunteered, and at times during WW 2, voluntary male enlistments were prohibited and all services conscripted their desired numbers through the Selected Service.
