Johnny Rivers is a unique figure in the history of rock music. On the most obvious level, he was a rock star of the 1960s and a true rarity as a white American singer/guitarist who made a name for himself as a straight-ahead rock & roller during the middle of that decade. Just as important behind the scenes, his recordings and their success led to the launching, directly and indirectly, of at least three record labels and a dozen other careers whose influence extended into the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond.
Rivers was very much a kindred spirit to figures like Buddy Holly and Ronnie Hawkins, with all of the verve and spirit of members of that first wave of rock & rollers. He had the misfortune of having been born a little too late to catch that wave, however, and took until the middle of the next decade to find his audience. Born John Henry Ramistella on November 7, 1942, in New York, his family moved to Baton Rouge, LA, in 1948, and it was there that his musical sensibilities were shaped. His father, who played the mandolin and guitar, introduced him to the guitar at an early age, and he proved a natural on the instrument.
Meanwhile, Ramistella also began absorbing the R&B sounds that were starting to turn up on the airwaves at the dawn of the 1950s. Additionally, he got to see performers like Fats Domino and Jimmy Reed in person, and by the time he entered his teens, he was immersed in rhythm & blues. He was also good enough to start playing guitar in local groups and at age 13, he formed his own band, the Spades, playing New Orleans-flavored R&B and rock & roll, especially Fats Domino, Larry Williams, and Little Richard. Ramistella made his recording debut leading the Spades in 1956 with the song "Hey Little Girl," issued on the Suede label.
In 1957, he went to New York and wangled a meeting with Alan Freed, who was then the most influential disc jockey in the country. This led to a change of name, at Freed's suggestion, to the less ethnic, more American-mythic Johnny Rivers (which may also have been influenced by the fact that Elvis Presley had portrayed a character named "Deke Rivers" in the movie Loving You that same year), and to a series of single releases under his new name. Johnny Rivers' official recording debut took place with an original song, "Baby Come Back," on George Goldner's Gone Records label in 1958, arranged by renowned songwriter Otis Blackwell. Neither this number -- which sounds a lot like Elvis Presley's version of Blackwell's "Don't Be Cruel" -- nor any of Rivers' other early singles, recorded for Guyden, Cub, Era, or Chancellor, was successful. He made his living largely performing with the Spades and cutting demos of songs for Hill & Range, primarily in Elvis Presley's style.
It was as a composer that Rivers experienced his first taste of success off of the stage, when a chance meeting with guitarist James Burton led to one of his songs, "I'll Make Believe," finding its way to Ricky Nelson and ending up on the album More Songs by Ricky. By 1961, he was 18 years old and a veteran performer with six years' professional performing under his belt and relatively little to show for it except the experience; even a lot of the established figures in the business who'd tried to give him various breaks over the years, including Alan Freed and George Goldner, had fallen on hard times by then. He moved to Los Angeles and began aiming for a career as a songwriter and producer.
Fate played its hand in 1963, however, when a friend who ran a restaurant in Los Angeles appealed to Rivers for help when his house band, a jazz group, suddenly quit. He reluctantly agreed to perform for a few nights in a stripped-down version of his rock & roll act, with just his electric guitar and a drummer, Eddie Rubin. That was when lightning struck -- it turned out that audiences at the restaurant liked the way he sang and played, and soon the crowds were growing and his performing stint turned into an open-ended engagement. Bassist Joe Osborn was hired to join the combo and fill out the sound and suddenly seeing Johnny Rivers was becoming the thing to do. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

@@kimkochel6754 Count me in with y'all! I'm from Colonial Beach, VA USA. I'm a few months shy of being 60. My one and only prayer and dream would be able to see Johnny Rivers live. Listening to the songs from Whiskey A GO-GO did it for me! I always wanted to be one of those girls you could hear in the back ground on the recordings. My cousin used to tease me and say man Eva, you've got it bad for Johnny! And still do!!! LOL! He still melts me like butter! ✌️☺️😁

Like many others have noted, the entrancing backup female vocals are something special on their own. They perfectly complement Johnny’s one-of-a-kind voice. The soaring flute or piccolo reminds me so much of the orchestration in Glen Campbell’s “by the time I get to Phoenix” - those productions induce a mournfulness I find sadly satisfying. So glad I grew up in the 60s.

+peter pkman I honestly thought Johnny Rivers was in the Rock Hall of Fame. You are right. I looked up the "R" names and Johnny Rivers is not there. Bonnie Raitt is there? Give me a break. She's in the HOF? I can count the number of career memorable Bonnie Raitt hits on one finger -- Something to Talk About. Did Johnny Rivers say something politically incorrect at some point? There is no excuse for Johnny Rivers not being in the Rock Hall of Fame. I'm a Baby Boomer (62) and I think he's terrific. Beautiful, distinctive voice and great songs. Johnny Rivers epitomizes Rock and Roll. Shame, shame, shame on the Rock Hall of Fame!

Let's remember that the hof is really just a joke for the most part. Sure they have some of who should be there, but it is just full of a lot of crap not based on actual talent. I say to hell with the hof, we that appreciate music like Johnny's should just honor him ourselves.

On this day in 1966 {August 27th} Johnny Rivers performed "Poor Side of Town" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... Two weeks later on September 11th the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #90, eight weeks later it would peak at #1 {for 1 week} and it spent 15 weeks on the Top 100... And on November 21st it also reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Singles chart... In 1969 Al Wilson covered “Poor Side of Town”; his version stayed on the Top 100 for 4 weeks, peaking at #75… Country singer Joe Stampley covered the song in 1983, his version peaked at #12 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... Between 1964 and 1978 he had twenty-nine Top 100 records; nine made the Top 10, his next biggest hit after "Poor Side of Town" was "Memphis", it peaked at #2* {for 2 weeks} on July 5th, 1964... Mr. Rivers, born John Henry Ramistella, will celebrate his 75th birthday in three months on November 7th {2017}... * The two records that kept "Memphis" out of the #1 spot were "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys and "Rag Doll" by the Four Seasons...

Johnny was born on November 7, 1942 and I was born on November 7, 1943. Now there is only a limited amount of talent allocated for people born on November 7th and apparently he got it all: Guitar player, singer, songwriter, producer, etc. Oh yeah, he's also lady-killer handsome. My talent was limited to just listening to, and enjoying, all his talents. But I want him to know that I've used my talent to the best of my ability and, as a result, I'm one of his biggest fans. Long live Johnny Rivers!

Forgot to mention, I also saw Johnny Rivers with the Ann Margret show in VietNam in 1965 or 1966. what a show. I was 18 then and I still remember the show. When he sang, where have all the flowers gone, you should have seen all those Marines trying not to be seen tearing up a little. (Including me)

julie nabb Thanks Julie, it was a special part of my life. an 18 year old kid from Chicago gone to fight in another part of the world, scared half to death, then being transported back in time, if only for an hour or so at the great show Ann Margrett and Johnny Rivers put on for us. all as clear to me now at 66 as it was when I was 18.

+Al I am somewhat biased, but I have always thought that of all the versions of flowers Johnny's is the best. Partly shows one of his strengths that he could sing a protest song and soldiers could look beyond part of that. Thanks for your service. I am a former Marine myself, just missed the actual Vietnam years. My older brother also a Marine did a tour in Vietnam in '69 - 70. When he visited I think it was after infantry school one of the albums he bought and left was Johnny's Rewind. I never asked, but I wonder if he may have seen Johnny in a later show himself. I was exposed due to that album and have been a big Johnny fan since.

Always loved this song and lyrics, [girl it's hard to find nice things on the poor side of town], and always had an admiration for the very talented Rivers. Never knew he was of Italian descent, as I am partly, as well as Irish descent. He was [is?] a musical genius. I was 10 years old when the Beatles first performed on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, and the following British invasion of the US top 40 am radio stations began. I think a lot of great US musician's and songwriters [Rivers] were overlooked and didn't get the airplay and notoriety they deserved because the US radio stations were playing any mediocre singles of any of the mediocre British bands that were cashing in on the tremendous success of the Beatles here in the USA. "Hello, we're from England, just like the Beatles!!"

This song came out in the late Summer / early Autumn of 1966, about the same time that Reverbs were making it big as an aftermarket accessory in cars. Listening to THE POOR SIDE OF TOWN in a car with a reverb is a memory I haven't forgotten in almost 50 years. It remains my all time favorite JR song because of that. Sorry gang, it's just one of those great (but personal) memories.
