Wikipedia - ? and the Mysterians (or Question Mark and the Mysterians) are an American garage rock band[6] from Bay City and Saginaw in Michigan, initially active between 1962 and 1969. Much of the band's music consisted of electric organ-driven garage rock and an enigmatic image inspired by the 1957 Japanese science fiction film The Mysterians.[7] In addition, the band's sound was also marked by the raw, resonating lead vocals of "?" (Question Mark, the stage name of Rudy Martínez),[2][3][4] making Question Mark and the Mysterians one of the earliest groups whose musical style is described as punk rock. Their music and imagery were highly influential on later bands.[8] ? and the Mysterians Origin Bay City and Saginaw, Michigan, U.S.

Remember when this song came out listening to it on my clock radio in my room late at night when I was supposed to be asleep turned way down low so my parents couldn’t hear it and having a huge smile on my face and acting like I was playing the organ

I live in Bay City Michigan and yesterday walked past a house that had a sign saying this song was recorded in a studio in the backyard. Had to look it up. Pretty cool song.

Not exactly a backyard, but a recording studio 'addition' to the back of a house... maybe the one you saw.

He used to live by my parents house in bay city. He would always blast this song in the summer and I asked my mom if she heard it yet this summer. So I of course I had to come on here and blast it in my house. =)

Seen an article maybe 10 years ago or so he lived in the Clio area and his place burned down. Apparently he had no insurance. Never heard anything after that. Clio is about 20 minutes north of me.

@@wjb111 That's correct. This is from an article on the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends site: "Unfortunately, Question Mark's fortunes took a turn for the worse in January of 2007 when his house, located in Vienna Township near Clio, Michigan, burned down. Although Question Mark was not injured, some of his dogs as well as rock and roll memorabilia from his career dating back over forty years were lost in the blaze."

I've always believed this song was a precursor not only of R.E.M. and the Cure, but also Prince; all of those guys were in grammar/middle/high school at the time this song ruled the charts in late 1966.

They were definitely a successful garage band. Also the Rivieras from South Bend, IN produced California Sun during that era.

9/2023.........I was 13 in 1966,........I'm a couple months away from turning 70. I remember being forced to take "teenager" dance lessons, when this tune came out. I loved the music, but hated the dance lessons, which we had to do after school. The dances of the day were: "The Swim", The Monkey, The Twist,...The Pony. All goofy-ass dances. My dancing skills never got me laid. LOL

I met JB on a cold winters night about 30 years ago . I was hitching aroud and determined to go hear him at the loaf and ladel in exeter Nh. He saw me before his show outside carrying my guitar having already stashed my sleeping bag before coming. He graciously shared a drink of whiskey w me and imparted some words of encouragement to me. The guys the real deal. Thanks JB. Brett
