Johnny Rivers was once described in a Rolling Stone review for Slim Slow Slider as "...having a voice like softly curling cigarette smoke.".Another way to think of him as an artist who never has a note out of place on any recording,
The rockabilly cat of the Whiskey,transformed himself on Changes and Rewind then went full circle with the masterpiece of Realization. Last Train To Memphis and Reinvention Highway in recent years proved Rivers was no "oldies act" living on the memories of his aging fan base.Shadows On The Moon is a totally ,fresh, vibrant sound. Don't expect to hear Chuck Berry covers here,instead a CD highlight is the 40 year too late collaboration with Jimmy Webb Where Words End a song that brings tears to your eyes if you've ever lost a loved one, This album's sound is tinged with reggae,Indian,and guitar work to die for.This is not just another typical reworking of familar hits that so many older artists get caught up in but another chapter in the career of one of an important fiqure in American Musical History.

This CD is new to me I like it very much, like anything Johnny Rivers sings

This song and "Hard Heart," are two of the best tracks on this 2009 LP by Johnny Rivers that is quite good from beginning to end. I still say, the sound of Johnny's voice was so good, his Americana music so tight and wonderful he could have stepped in at any time to play with The Band. His voice would have blended into their repertoire and he could have sung terrifically with Danko and Levon Helm. For that matter, one listen to Bobby Vee's "Tucson Girl," from his latest CD "The Adobe Sessions," would qualify him as well to have been a vocalist with the great performers of The Band. That's because these two fine musicians were always on top of the their game.

Johnny Rivers went all in with Michael Georgiades on this album, singing songs written mostly by him with a couple of notable exceptions. So, the question is, does JR sit around talking with the songeriter who then goes and transforms those sensations into song, or is JR just so confident in the talent of this particular songwriter that he records the majority of an album based on those songwriter's song. I do not know, just asking. Anyhow, this is an exquisite song! Go ahead and listen to it, first as a song, then as a song from one of the greatest interpreters of songwriter material ever to set records to vinyl or CD. To be really dramatic, compare this to JR songs from the Whisky and realize that the same basic formula is here, brought up-to-date, and standing here on its own. A pretty great song!
