I've owned this CD Blues collection for years - and it is very well played. too. But this disc gets played the most - and this track is one of the tracks that I always have to play at least twice... Johnny Shines was most definitely a Delta Blues master...

And what tail-end-kicking slide guitar.

One of the greatest blues recordings ever and, seemingly, totally unknown. Very different from Robert version; Shines vocal, rhythm guitar and slide sounds like they are out of control, why this track is so brilliant. Shines, for those unaware of this, was Johnson's traveling partner and learned his stuff straight from the source. A hellacious recording.

This is the same as the song of Robert Johnson "Terraplane blues". Johnnny Shines was a Robert Johnson's one-time musical and travelling partner.

The Terraplane was a fancy Hudson car from 1932-1938, and a status symbol at the time, hence its use offering sexual allusions in the song. It was long gone by the time Johnny Shines recorded this. Dynaflow was a very inefficient form of automatic transmission used in Buicks from 1947 till 1963, so was just an update for a later audience. I'm pretty sure Johnny Shines played it at a concert I attended in the '70s, though by then Dynaflow had also passed on. The song is certainly an old favourite of mine on record.
