On the note of "what took them so long to go 3D", official interviews with the devs state that they didn't want to go 3D until they were confident that they could do Kirby justice in 3D. So yeah, your assumption is pretty much on-point.
@metashade42182 жыл бұрын
From what I read from developer interviews with this game, one of the main reasons why it took HAL so long to make a full on 3D Kirby game was because they had a hard time telling where Kirby was facing due to his round body figure, along with them having a hard time translating Kirby's star spitting ability into 3D. I recommend reading their developer interviews with this game, it's actually quite fascinating in how much HAL struggled in putting Kirby into 3D & polishing its gameplay. Despite the struggles HAL had, it finally paid off since they really did a phenomenal job transitioning the classic tried & true Kirby gameplay into 3D. 12:11 That's kind of underselling these levels if I'm honest, especially since this game's appeal is also going on much more experimental level tropes compared to the very vanilla ones Star Allies had, which was a letdown when that game came out Also I know the script was probably very quick paced as a way of relaxation between a stressful month, but it's HAL Labs the ones that develop and conceptualize Kirby, not Nintendo, since that's kind of like brushing something like... Fire Emblem or Pokémon as just Nintendo instead of Intelligent Systems or Game Freak Mainly bringing this up since it's on HAL's team the ones that kept Kirby as 2D for most of his career, not really Nintendo the one that was taking them long to make the jump

“One of the more simplistic games to translate to 3D” in theory yeah, but there are definitely things to consider that I imagine took time to work out. How much do you limit the float without making it worthless or overpowered in a 3D space? Should inhaling be autoaimed or need manual aiming? How should the camera work in a game that’s both an action platformer and a 3D fighting like game? How do you balance the powers for the new space?

@@V-Jes Oh I've read developers stories of Mario 64 & especially Sonic Adventure, & honestly I'd argue HAL had a more difficult time translating Kirby's gameplay into 3D than Nintendo did with Mario & Sonic Team did with Sonic, seeing as they stumbled upon countless amounts of obstacles for over 2 decades in perfectly translating Kirby's gameplay into 3D, such as having a hard time telling where Kirby was facing in 3D due to his round body figure, figuring out how Kirby's star exhaling ability, large number of copy abilities & movesets can work in 3D, how levels are going to be designed around Kirby's large number of copy abilities & movesets, etc. If it was so easy to make a 3D Kirby game nowadays, dedicated fans would've made a 3D Kirby game themselves long before HAL did with Forgotten Land, even with Nintendo's BS copyright strikes & especially given with all the tools & technology fans have in making a 3D Kirby game themselves.

While that's true, Nintendo does own the IP. A lot of people have this misconception that Nintendo can do whatever they want with their IP and so a 3D Kirby should have happened by now. The problem is they don't understand it's not about what Nintendo can do. It's about what they will do. And Nintendo almost always leaves these things up to the original developers. They don't tell other companies what to make (they can't anyway, they can only say "yes" or "no" to specific projects if Nintendo is publishing the game), though sometimes they do make requests. Basically even though Nintendo CAN do something, they won't do it if someone else created a franchise and especially if said company is still willing to work on it.

Kirby is the only gaming icon of the old 8bit era that somehow has never gotten a true 3D game and yet is also still getting games in general. That i can think of anyway. Even Megaman, while not directly as it was a spinoff thing, delved into 3D at some point.
@NanaKyoto2 жыл бұрын
The linear design of the levels for this game was the right call, as while this may be the first mainline Kirby game in 3D, they needed to take it one step at a time, so perhaps the next time we get a 3D Kirby game, the environments will be much more expansive for exploration. And so far, I've been enjoying my time with the game, as I haven't played another Kirby game since Planet Robobot (which I really should get around to completing after not playing it for a few years), but with the success Forgotten Land is seeing currently, the future of seeing more 3D Kirby games looks promising.

I really enjoyed this game, seeing Kirby’s first jump into the 3D was phenomenal. We got to see the Tornado Copy Ability make its return and the Sleep ability has an actual use (once you’ve acquired the blueprint). The beast pack were fair, my favorites being Grimondo and Clawroline. Kind DeDeDe, Bonkers, and Mr. Frosty’s beast pack design was sick. The evolved Copy Abilities were a nice touch, changing the design and properties of said ability, some of which are nods to Copy Abilities that weren’t added into the game (e.g. Space Ranger utilizing the power of the Spark/Plasma ability). My personal favorite mouthful ability is the roller coaster. The car mode acted as the Wheel Copy Ability.

"Someone in the team really liked Resident Evil 2". I haven't played Kirby yet, does this mean there's zombies or something like that? I couldn't handle a lot of the horror lore in RE2 very well, I dunno if I want to be creeped out again if Kirby hits those same notes.

I know the devs actually touched on why it took so long and it was actually a fascinating read, I recommend looking up the interview that the devs gave because there's more to it surprisingly. I think adapting the well established 2D formula just wasn't as easy as it sounded and some of the changes they made to Kirby and the ablilities he uses show that.

As for the game, I honestly never found backtracking to be an issue because unlike Crash, Kirby has some degree of camera panning control. Not to mention that Kirby moves slower and has a smaller hitbox than Crash. Otherwise, I more or less agree with everything you said.

Also, Kirby has a health meter. Crash dies in one hit without his mask buddy. Smacking into an obstacle or enemy would be less punishing.

Wanna know an amazing cheese tactic for no hit runs for bosses? Ice and co-op. You’re invincible with the Ice abilities shield and with a buddy doing all the hard lifting it’s hilarious to just sit there and watch the boss do fuck all. Really, most challenges can be almost cheesed with no risk because Bandana dee is not affected by most challenges.

The no hit boss challenges and especially the ones that happen during mid levels were definitely a pain. One hit and you got to do it all over again. Just make sure you have a high upgraded powerup with you when doing those challenges.

Slight correction on the video, Nintendo doesn't develops the Kirby games. That would be H.A.L Lab, with Nintendo just publishing the games. Personally, I enjoyed Forgotten Land, though collecting the Waddle Dee could have been better streamline as having to replays level does get tiring very quickly. My other criticism of the game is that forgotten land can be very obtuse at time as it does not do a good job in teaching the players the controls. I didn't know that Kirby could do a counter attack after dodging as the game never once taught me nor tell me.

Tons of simple fun with no 'gimmick' outside of mouthful mode, which is never used without purpose and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
