John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 - July 16, 2014), known as Johnny Winter, was an American blues guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer. Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

I saw JW about five years before he died. It was in Asheville, NC; at their annual Christmas Jam. When he came out he could barely walk, but once he sat down in the chair and got situated he tour it up. It was like the only thing on him that still functioned well was his fingers.

The band that warmed up played loud like hell and I remember thinking when Johnny goes on he it is going to change that cause he play better so no need for this stupid loud volume. He cranked the up the volume to even louder lol. They where doing this funny dance while playing and it looked fun like hell in their color full costumes. I never forget that show thanks Johny

That's funny - I'm 68 years old as well and started guitar at age 9 and gigging at 11. My dad took my to my first concert ever to see JW at age 11 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City. It was LOUD (4 Twin Reverbs cranked). Johnny was easily my biggest guitar influence and I did the same thing - learning his licks from vinyl. Funny - white midwest kid learning blues from an albino guitar player LOL Good times!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Him and Alvin Lee could play so fast you couldn't even count the notes . But Johnny has those to fingerpick so he is displaying a most unusual unorthodox style. He's a stone bluesman no doubt. Those blues guys always had unorthodox styles . 🙋

Well, go ask a banjo player. 😂 Using the thumb and two fingers you got three notes lined up at any time without having to worry about hitting the right one. That‘s nifty and fast as can get.

@@richardervins , that's true for banjo but I think Johnny is alternate thumb picking here playing scalework...not sure if banjo players normally do that but probably some who can!
@richardervins
@richardervins Жыл бұрын
@@georgejordan5611 Hard to say what actually made him adopt this technique. As a guitar, banjo, and pedal steel player I know the benefits of using a thumb pick. By just putting your thumb on your pointing finger you actually get the same feeling as with a regular pick. By using the thumb pick for the lower strings and the rest of your fingers for picking the higher strings you gain a lot of speed without having to rush things. Arpeggios and double stops are a breeze. And with the kind of music he was playing, muting didn‘t really matter. I met and talked music with Johnny several times. Despite his addiction he was a very nice person to talk to and spend time with. But we never discussed his choice of pics, probably because I knew I‘d never even come close to his sphere. 😁

My Dad made a comment to me some time in the late 80's seeing a Guitar Player Magazine cover in my room. He said, "Oh, so he made something of himself." He grew up in Beaumont TX, and the Winter Twins were not far behind him in school. My grandfather was by family Legend considered the best Jazz Drummer in the State of Texas. My Dad played 5 String Bass Violin in a band with my Grandfather. One night the Piano Player was sick, and thus my Dad spoke to this effect after seeing J. Winter on the Mag Cover. "Your Grandfather and I hired his twin (Edgar) to play piano that night.'" I asked Edgars age at that time, he said probably 14. I asked how he did, anything he might remember. He said the Winter boys were a little strange and Edgar came in played the gig, and said or did nothing notable. Johnny was on a prior GPlayer mag cover I believe a year before with Bo Diddley. My Dad used to call me Bo Diddlley as he would come in from work and sit down in the House Master Chair. Strange world.
