He was great at the blues ,gro wing up in southwest texas learning from all the old time greats. He also had a knack of running blues riffs thru a mess pf rock riffs.he earned the name "CAPTAIN SPEED FINGERS". HE REALLY EXCELLED WHEN HE & HIS BROTHET EDGAR GOT TOGETHER. THEN ALL THE YOUNG PLAYERS REALLY IDOLIZED & ADMIRED HIM. THEN THE 80's and heavy metal came around & kinda put the brakes on his popularity. By the 90's HE FADED AWAY INTO A CORNER. I saw him live in 2003 at a festival in Italy. I was there to see Robert Plant but I am thankful every single day for having had the opportunity to see Johnny on stage. I'm a metalhead at heart, but he will always be my favourite guitarist.

I've followed Johnny for about 45 years...he was my 1st guitar hero❗ Personally, I wished he'd recorded an all acoustic album, because so many were blinded by his ferocious chops & high speed, relentless attack, on electric, unaware of his total capacity. The man was a virtuoso, with an encyclopedic knowledge of blues history, capable of all it's guitar styles. His drummer in your early video, Uncle Red Turner, spoke of these things, detailing how he could literally play along to any of his many 1000's of blues records, in his collection, including showing Tommy Shannon the Blues ropes. Tommy insisted both Johnny & his younger brother, Edgar, were both intellectual geniuses. Jimi Hendrix sought slide guitar lessons from Johnny & played bass guitar when they jammed at Johnny's manager's club, The Scene, in NYC...his manager was Steve Paul. Last time I saw Johnny was a few months before he passed. I took my son to see him at the Blusfest at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He was one of those artists that played till the day he died. There were 2 people, one on each arm, helping him to the folding chair front center. They gave him his guitar and he melted our faces. I felt good to have turned my son on to a LEGEND.

Caught Johnny live twice in the 80's. The first time he headlined with Little Charlie and Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Austin Opera House right before Stevie blew into the national scene. Stevie opened for Johnny. I had bruises on my arms and shoulders from everyone dancing and swinging their arms and elbows into everyone packed around them. Epic! Thank you for doing the video. Great reaction throughout. Johnny has always been my personal favorite. He was at home in so many blues genres and I loved it when he took it to rock. I think Still Alive And Well is one of the best albums ever made. Starting with Rock Me Baby and ending with Let It Bleed, it's a blues/rock masterpiece. Rock and Roll is his song on the album and he jams slide.

Sadly I only got to see Johnny towards the end of his career, he was quite frail and was helped onto the stage, but man when he picked up the guitar he still kicked ass. Without a doubt one of the all time greats, Check out his version of Highway 61 Revisited, and Jumpin Jack Flash, imo the best ever version of the song. Great reaction btw.

True story when Stevie Ray Vaughan went out to California, with Mark Beno back around 1974/1975 to do a record with Beno, he was walking around downtown L.A./Hollywood and heard a guitar player that floored him....He called his brother Jimmy back in Texas and said, i've just heard the best Blues guitar he had ever heard. That guitar player was HOLLYWOOD FATS, who was actually the same as SRV at the time. Hollywood is in my top 10 all time guitar players! The Woodstock performance is better he's in open G (DGDGBD) or Spanish tuning here and he used the 12 string because he liked the pickups and the sustain he got. Now don't miss JW doing "Dallas" on his National. Great reactions. Nothing undercover about Johnny, he was a major star, he was the best white blues singer by far, and he had a wild edge in his music that was strong and compelling. His American competitors included Jimi Hendrix, Mike Bloomfield, Terry Kath, Duane Allman, Elvin Bishop, but Johnny was the strongest singer, (Check "Be Careful With a Fool"). It's just sort of urban legend but I've heard it that Johnny, Billy Gibbons, and Rory Gallagher were the players Hendrix was most awed by. It's pretty believable, and I'm sure the feeling was mutual. There was just a tiny handful with those capabilities back then.
