Growing up in the 50s, got our first TV about '54, remember the variety shows and then Johnny came on the scene and I discovered Jonathan Winters and his hilarious brand of humor. A high school classmate and I were car crazy and working on our cars and listening to one of Jonny's LP comedy albums provided hours of side splitting laughter trying to work on our cars. Good memories. Such good memories. Jonny's epic improvisations were just incredible. I remember someone would give him a random object and he'd create a hilarious comedy routine around that object. Miss him and that era dearly.

I met Johnathan Winters when I was in the Marines training recruits in San Diego. He was doing a pilot for a TV show and was dressed as a Drill Instructor. He ‘borrowed’ one of our recruit platoons and did a walk through as a Drill Instructor. We told the recruits not to laugh. I had been a fan since I was a kid. Our family never missed him when he was on TV and had all his albums memorized. Semper Fi Johnathan and RIP.

He had some weird nights, though -- some where he did nothing but drop bricks and clunkers, and a few (very few) when he was just _mean._ I wish I could cite specifics like shows, hosts, or whatever, but I can't. I just remember being occasionally disappointed in his appearances, and once or twice, shocked by his ability to slice deep.

I remember being in high school and coming home from a date or a night out with friends to find my parents sitting up in bed watching Carson and laughing together. I would often sit at the end of their bed and watch Carson and his guests for a few minutes and laugh just as hard as my parents were. His comedy and deliverance spoke to every age, and his guests were often very entertaining and delightful, certainly Jonathan Winters was among those who were most adored. What a great time that was for all of us. We appreciated the need for comedy relief then just as we need it now, but back then it seemed to have a quality that we’ve not truly been able to duplicate.

I will never forget one Tonight Show, and I was a kid at the time, when Jonathan Winters was on and he was apparently manic at the time. But he was so extraordinary, so funny that Johnny just gave him the whole show. Johnny stopped for commercial, came back, and let Jonathan do his thing. There were other guests we never got to see, Johnny just let Jonathan go. Jonathan was not so manic that he wasn't able to appreciate that he had an audience and a task, but he was just manic enough that he was able to keep up a level of performance that I remember to this day. If you could find that day, I would so appreciate seeing it again.

I feel highly blessed to have seen Mr. Winters when I was in college at Texas Tech. When it was announced that he was coming to Tech I got a front row seat reserved. That was a true highlight of my college career. What a crazy show! Near the end a friend of mine yelled out, “Do some improve with the mic!” Winters grabbed the mic stand and started sweeping looking for mine’s. Made a beeping sound and said, “Here’s one. Dig it up.” He did several more skits with the mic and stand that were hilarious. What a genius.
