I recorded "Columbo" on VHS tapes in the 90's (believe it or not, that is when I discovered him!) I fell in LOVE with the show and especially the character. I have (I believe) every episode of "Columbo" that was aired on TV, from "Prescription:Murder" to "Columbo Likes the Nightlife". Loved him in every single one!!!

I went home for the holidays and my father (70yrs old) and I took a trip to Walmart because he was keeping his eye out for ANY season of Columbo. He would speak of it fondly. He ended up finding the whole box set for only $50 and I showed up in the electronics section to see a sneaky grin on his face, he was so pleased with himself! SO, over the Christmas holidays and New Years we would watch an episode or two a night before bed; My Dad and Mum and I. It was one of the coziest, loveliest times of my life. At 34 years of age with my parents. I will treasure it forever.

Nice comment but if he actually did it, that would have been overdoing the show. Peter Falk was a man of moderation. He used to do small jokes, small talks always in moderation. That's actually one of the reasons I like him so much. So here in this Johnny Carson show, he knew how long he should do the show. Not too little not too much.

As someone who is probably much younger than the average Columbo fan, the show made me really understand where boomers were coming from when they lamented the decline of American culture. The 70s episodes are pure class, the later reboots are offputtingly trashy and pulpy. I think it has everything to do with the precipitous decline in the level of dignity Americans experienced in their day to day lives as the new deal was eviscerated by politicians who had been captured by corporate interests. Everything, not just the tv shows, lost the deeply imbued sense of dignity, integrity, and inherent value as people's economic lives slowly, sometimes not so slowly came crashing down around them. The same systems and institutions that were once upheld as pillars of a functional society were reduced to absolute mockeries of their former selves as their legitimacy became eroded by cynical bourgeois interests seeping in and deconstructing them. All that to say, if the society you live in, the world around you, the institutions you're supposed to rely on to protect you, have no respect for you and are totally uninterested in providing a dignified life for their citizens- How are you supposed to take the mere CONCEPT of dignity seriously? You couldn't make a show like Columbo today, because the America he lived in and the America we live in are two entirely different universes. All because the capitalist cartels that control every aspect of our society need to make the line go up more. The sheer reach of the knock-on effects created by that sad fact never ceases to astound me.

COLUMBO (1968-1978): "The" best TV presentation ever! The writing, acting, unique approach, lead man....and, maybe most importantly, the 1970s era itself, made it the best. All top notch brilliant! Peter Falk: best detective, in every way.

I saw this one the other day. Columbo had to interview a witness at a soup kitchen. Naturally he was unshaven, looking down-trotten and in his old wrinkled raincoat. A nun there (Joan Van Fleet?) thought he was a bum and tried to get him a new coat. "No ma'me. I've had this coat for seven years," Columbo said. "Oh you poor man!" she responds. Really a riot!

I think you somehow knew when he entered the soup kitchen he was going to be taken for a down and out. But it still didn't stop you enjoying what was about to happen. Reminds me of some Laurel and Hardy scenes. While they're working on a roof, you see a glass greenhouse below. You just know that greenhouse won't be intact for much longer. Or when they're on a boating lake. You just know everyone's going to end up in the water. Sorry - this is meant to be about Columbo, but I wanted to mention L & H.

@@alanwilson2078 Why are you criticizing, yet compairing diff actors, simultaneously? U enjoy being presumptuous? John Cassavetes was a fine filmmaker, a great husband & father !! 💓 His office was upstairs from a theatre I worked in at the time in Beverly Hills. He had a lot to give, butt left us too soon ! 💔 Shamefully, all 3 of them were buzzed on the Dick Cavett Show, but they are not the first ! I've seen many talk shows where guests were drunk or buzzed on some substance. 🤪 Don't judge people you never met on paltry hearsay. 🙄
@alanwilson2078
@alanwilson2078 2 жыл бұрын
@@SweetChicagoGator I have also seen guests on talk shows enebreated and silly, but those two were over the top rude to Cavett and his audience! If it is true that drunken behavior displays our real selves, then Cass and Gazz surely cemented that sentiment.

Peter never said why his show is so popular. Its not another whodunit, its a HOWdunit. They start off and show you the killer and the scene and you spend two hours finding out how they catch him at it. His constant mannerisms to lead people to think he's a goof also help him in the end. Its a brilliant bit of story telling
