BACKSTORY: If there appears to be some awkwardness between Chase and Carson it was likely due to a New York Magazine cover story from 1975 proclaiming Chase to be the funniest man in America, where an NBC exec said he'd be the likely successor to Carson---AND would start guest hosting in 6 months! Chase dismissed the rumors saying he could never be tied down for 5 years interviewing TV personalities. Kind of a snipe at Carson. Carson subsequently said that Chase couldn't ad-lib a fart after a baked bean dinner.

Carson was by far superior to Chase. Chase could be funny in the right role but otherwise I find him underwhelming. Beyond that I've heard nothing bad things about him as a person. Alternatiely, pretty much everything people have said about Johnny was overwhelmingly good.

I grew up with Johnny Carson. And my Dad would love to watch the monologue before he went to sleep. But come to find out. He had a tragic life. Reading it hear on FV his mom was never Satisfied with his accomplishments. He made so much money & some was somewhat invested incorrectly. He had 3three boys. And one passed away tragically in an accident. He had a drinking problem (who doesn't in Showbusiness?) And was a bit frugal. They he would not make small talk to guests between commercial breaks. I am not judging this was on F.V. here on YT. But we all loved his persona & enthusiasm to entertain us & make us laugh & a great interviewer for all of us who were infatuated with the next latest great "Celebrity". God Bless You Johnny RIP🙏❤ We will always love you forever.

Let me tell you I got all this from "Facts Verse" here on KZbin (look it up). And I will never understand how he blew up after Joan Rivers accepted her own show on Fox. And called to tell him & he would not pick up the phone? Why was that? A Woman has a right to move up to bigger & better opportunities when they are presented. Which of course is harder especially for a "Female Comedian". And he got upset with "John Davidson" also. Why? They have to stay put. And be at his "Beck & Call" indefinitely till he can tell them they can leave? You know Doc Severson is still alive in his 90s. I think 95yrs young. Don't get me wrong I loved Johnny Carson. And couldn't wait to see my favorite stars. In High School I had the 2second shift from 12pm to 5pm. That is why I could stay up to see them. I am a "Baby Boomer" born 1960. So when I watched it was taped the same day. And shown at night. Of course I remember more from the 70s on till the end 90s!❤

I'm sure I watched this when it aired. My parents thought that wide lapels were revolting, which Carson demonstrated night after night in this era. Ditto the disco uniforms and leisure suits of the same era. Chase came from East Coast money and breeding, and thus seemed to know how to pick out a good suit. He was even self-conscious about his tie, which was in very good taste, unlike the super-wide versions worn by Carson.

Chase spent literally 2 minutes rambling on, describing how to set up a scenario for a pratfall which made no sense and seemed like 5 minutes, then did his pratfall in 5 seconds. What made his movies so successful were good writers, who wrote comedic scenes tailored to Chase’s style of comedy.

It was actually about the entire Not Ready For Prime Time Players at the time, not just Chevy. and it was from a quote Carson gave to Tom Shales of The Washington Post for an article he was doing. SNL retaliated however by doing some snipes back at Carson on later shows after on Weekend Update, one being that Carson was kicking around the idea of perhaps maybe doing HIS show live and Jane Curtin, anchorwoman on WU at the time, said that was a good thing, since he had been "doing the Tonight Show dead for the past fifteen years."

Some context here - Johnny's contract was ending and there was a lot of rumor that Chevy would be replacing Johnny. There is another video on youtube where Richard Pryor comes on after Chevy and mocks Chevy in defense of Johnny about when Chevy is going to take over (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmjGaZWBrJeKbsk). I'd say you had him pegged pretty well. When the Friars Club roasted Chevy back in the early 2000's, almost none of his peers agreed to participate. Chase was said to be very upset by this, but apparently he's such a narcissist that he never realized that most people in the entertainment industry couldn't stand him. I was always Team Bill Murray, who replaced Chase on SNL after Season 1 when Chase left to go to Hollywood. Murray & Chase always had a rivalry of sorts, although I've heard that they patched up their differences.

Saturday night live the first couple years. Even Chevy Chase was funny. After a few years he turned out to be boring boring boring and a small area of comedy that never expanded. He is not well liked by his fellow cast members
