This show was such a part of my life growing up. As a child I'd wake up at midnight from a bad dream and go see my parents as they watched Johnny. As a teen I enjoyed the funniest comedians and great musicians. As a young adult I loved Johnny's comic brilliance, dapper style and imagined being interviewed by him. There was more class in one night's show than there has been in the entire late night lineup since Johnny signed off.

I have been playing trumpet for 52 years. When I was 16, on a Friday night when I could stay up to midnight, the band played a piece with Doc playing a solo in the upper register. I was so excited about Doc's playing that I couldn't like let Doc outdue me! So I picked up my horn and wailed away on it forgetting what time it was. Then I heard a bang from upstairs from my dad jumping out of bed and running downstairs. He yelled "what are you doing?" Realizing that I just woke up everyone in the house all I could say was that I couldn't like Doc out play me! He laughed and went back to bed.

This video is a great example of why Johnny was so much better than Jay Leno. Look at the interaction between Johnny, Ed, and Doc. Very relaxed, cordial, and respectful. Johnny really cared for his team and interacted with them in a sincere way. Jay Leno, on the other hand, only had Kevin Eubanks and treated him like dirt. Jay Leno was a one man show where the main character was marginally funny. Johnny was an amazing talent made all the better by the people he surrounded himself with. THAT is what made Johnny a legend

@@toddbu-WK7L such a great analysis, Todd, all true. One of Johnny's greatest attributes us something no one else has proved to do: make fun of himself all the time and it seems he really enjoyed it. I never laugh at or with the others. I have just started watching these old shows and I do laugh and they are usually wildly entertaining across the board. What a luck out for NBC. They never could have imagined what they had in 1961 when they first hired him. I hope more of th eff shows fron the 60's and 70's keep resurfacing. I am so happy to see this posted here, thanks for that. They were so tight and well arranged it was incredible. But one of the few criticisms I have of Johnny and the show is how often he announced that the band would be playing a song, and I'd always watch no matter who was on to see the band. And, no exaggeration, almost every time at the end Johnny would announce that sorry we are out of time and the band won't play. I mean, they'd be bsing about some lame crap on and on, and I'm like, it ain't gonna happen. Doc eventually started to get in his face about, and would be like "Yea, we are supposed to play, I hope we don't run out of time, again" kind of thing. It got to be a bit of a thing between them I think. Anyway, it really pissed me off because it happened so much. Maybe I can find all the times they actually played now on the Tube.

No question the best orchestra of its time and I haven’t seen anything close to it since.
