Great vid. Informative and lively enough to banish boring. I use a similar style net for getting bait fish when I fish. Smaller mesh, and weights are added to aid in the dispersing of the net. It takes a full day to make one large enough to be fruitful with smaller (read: lots more) mesh but the process is identical. I need to replace mine and this was a great refresher. Thanks for sharing...

My uncle used nets for catfish in the Mississippi River and used tangled nylon he got for free at the factory where they made the cordage. sometimes the spools were loose and it was not cost effective to salvage the nylon thread so he would get a large boxful and spent days making nets. and untangling cordage. in 1970 he showed me how to use the needle and make the net knot. It sure used up a lot of thread. I used a card that was 3" so it was only good to catch large fish. My net was eight feet long when I ran out of cordage and hung on the wall as display for years and never was put in the water. pack-rat that I am, it may still be out in the shed someplace...

Hey Johnny, Ok I see how you expand your net size... I am interested in working in the other direction therefore reducing the net size and am trying to wrap my head around this action. Am rebuilding a wooden trout/landing fishing net and have an exact number of mesh loops to start out with (along the wooden ring) and ending the overall net taper (cone) down to somewhat of a point. Can you explain or show a process to do so ie: a reduction or subtraction of a loop... 🤔

@@johnryder6853 That is easy then 😉 😉 😉 On this page: igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-knots-close-up/ you will see a table with UK links to supplies. When it comes to netting needles, I think the link is for a set of them. I am sure that if you do not want a set there will be suppliers that sell them individually. Just remember that the bigger the needle, the larger the card you will need to tie each loop of the net. When it comes to a netting card, your credit card will do to start with. I find that the best line to start with is a natural jute garden twine. It just holds a knot better and is easier to practice with. If you do enjoy net making, then you can also make your own netting needles and cards 😉 😉 😉

@KnottingKnots

There is no special knot, just use your favourite securing knot. Tie it off and then play with it, just to check that it works fine. Sometimes in slippery cord, a dab of glue helps, or melt the knot with a lighter.

the point in increasing the number of loops is that the net becomes wider in th centre so when you catch a bunny it pulls round them with the draw string like a purse, hence the name . a purse net without the shaping is just a net.

Just looked at the book and there is nothing on repairing nets. I think I might just break my net and then see how hard it is to repair. I guess the critical thing is to have a mesh board that matches the size of the net that you are repairing. The next thing would be to start at a good area and then work along and then down etc over the broken area. Mmmm just guessing though.

I could say that I'm a handicrafter in many ways. I have just mastered the knotting technique, and are planning for making nets useful for several purposes. @KnottingKnots

Yes, most definitely. I would suggest that you make a purse net like in the video, then once you get the hang of that design your bag. One suggestion may be to start off with a ring like in the purse net, except you continue all the way around. Once you have completed a full circle continue around in a spiral till you reach the maximum diameter. This would give you a round bag. Or create a flat mesh net and then fold and mesh the sides together to make a flat syle bag. Just instant thoughts on this.

I gave you a thumbs up for being English, and for making what is an easy to follow tutorial as you said ... but OHHH, the waffling! Sometimes you repeated the same redundant phrase in a single sentence, 5 times! You seem to have been watching far too much american TV. They never use a simple statement where a thousand unnecessary words can be inserted. Viz. a terminally verbose american would say : "Now then what I want to say is, is that what you're going to want to go on ahead and do is, is you're going to want to go on ahead and put your needle right up through the back of that loop right there, is what you're going to want to go on ahead and do." Please force yourself to watch this lengthy video through from beginning to end, twice, as I did, and consider this term : "Cutting-room floor".

More your "aspiring" knotter at this stage! I am awaiting an assortment of needles, and have made a wire needle to practice with in the meantime. Getting supplies of netting twine in Australia is problematic. But I'm wanting to make netting for shopping bags, haynets, hammock maybe. I bought ferret nets for my son when he was small, and often wanted to know how they were made, so thanks! And the idea of using them for hanging stuff up off the floor is clever. Storage solution nets. I need lots of those!

Australia, Australia we love you! I lived in Penrith for 3 years in the 70's. It would seem that the UK is the only place where netting supplies are readily available. I do plan shortly to do a tutorial on making a round net. I do also have a video on making a fishing net, which only uses the single knot as opposed the the double in the video above.
