The door slider is for conserving the AC. If you're sleeping in the bedroom with the Air Conditioning on all night, you don't want to cool the entire apartment. Just use the slider to close off the bedroom to the rest of the apartment and keep the cool air only in the bedroom.

For an extended stay in any country as a tourist, I think having a "base" is a good idea. I'm considering doing this in Japan as I can get a place that cost less than 90 days in a hotel, and taking the Shinkansen all around the country to explore it as a leisurely pace.

It's an incredible amount of money to be wasting just because you're too lazy to put your suitcase in a storage locker when you go do side trips? Let's say you're only spending $50/night on it. Instead using the $50 each night to upgrade your supper would be the difference of eating at a family restaurant VS a top tier restaurant in the city.
