Join us for our adventure here in Lithuania, starting in the capital city of Vilnius. My friend @baldandbankrupt and I venture around the city center in hunt for a traditional Lithuanian breakfast and a warm wool hat for Bald's bald head. Will we find either? I'm 30years old. As Bald said - we can not miss Soviet past. Because our grand parents were suffering, our parents were fighting for independence and we have to cherish what they have built for us. It was worst years of Lithuania's history, stopped development which Lithuania had since early 20th century, killed ~30% of people, mostly intellectual, rich people, created shady schemes (bribes, corruption, etc.) and we are still fighting with all these leftovers. And not only that, balts (Latvians and Lithuanians) are not slavs, they have totally different culture, language, history, etc. And nobody reacts to word Soviet as a trigger, but everyone wants aknowledgment of differences and that it was dark past against people's will.

18:00 regarding what u were talking about here: I highly doubt that as lithuania has a rich proud history since way before the soviet takeover, and that is their national identity i would guess. Yes, your take on this is quite precise. As a Lithuanian myself I can tell that Lithuania is proud of its long lasting and rich history which has been built through the ages and those 50 years of the soviet time are remembered as a nightmare. The pasties you were eating are called kibinas. It's a traditional dish of the Karaim peoples who have been living in Lithuania's Trakai region since the middle ages. If you ever visit Trakai (a worthwhile destination, though nothing Soviet for Bald there), try some kibins there, they're something else entirely over there.
@eyeeyeoh

And then Karaims were eradicated because they used to practice Judaism, right? Now most kibinai places offer pork as a filling and that’s ok.
@Rimsiakas
@Rimsiakas 2 жыл бұрын
@@eyeeyeoh I don't know about that. Wasn't able to find anything too specific online, but it seems that the nazis distinguished Karaims from Jews and didn't apply the same policies to them. A 1897 census says that there were 424 Karaims living in Trakai. 2001 census says there were 273. So while the population decreased over a century, it doesn't seem like they were eradicated.

Lithuania can afford to do that because it can depend on the USA/EU for trade and it is very insignificant to China. At present 12-15 nations recognised Taiwan as a separate country. It doesn't mean anything to China(PRC) as long as Taiwan (ROC) itself did not declare as a separate country.

Also, would love to replicate on Johnys last words. We do not want to delete our history, we wish it woul'nt have happened. It is still very painfull to a lot of Lithianians, since there are still a lot of people that lost their loved ones or grandparents to the regime. Some of our parents or grandparents came back from the Siberia. The history is still alive. Of course there's always people that glamorize those times, but mostly we educate our youth on it . Constant discussions , art projects, exibitions created on it, so we would know. But it is not supose to be part of our identity, it was forced on us. :)
@grobuonis2773
@grobuonis2773 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, that last sentence is just what I was going to say - not our history, therefore we don't have to preserve any of it. We're not deleting our history, in fact we're promoting and reviving it. "Destroying history" is one of the biggest pet peeves of mine. Two months prior to the removal of the monument to regime collaborator Cvirka (which made it into Bald's video), a new monument to Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius was unveiled, or what about that sculpture of Jonas Basanavičius from a few years ago. To do the opposite of what we have been doing since 1990 or even to have done nothing since then would be the real destruction of history, as we would end up having all of the same copy-pasted, inorganically imposed revolutionaries, heroes, holidays, national myths and narratives as 14 other faraway and sometimes culturally foreign countries. Now THAT would be destruction of OUR history.

I completely disagree that Lithuanians are "covering up" the Soviet occupation and pretending it didn't happen. The Baltic countries take a staunch EU position precisely because they haven't forgotten what the Soviet Union did to them and fear what Putin could do in the future. Unlike the other Soviet republics, the Baltics had had a tradition of democracy prior to the Soviet tanks rolling into their countries. From Bald's reaction to your observations, he clearly disagrees too.

I spent a week in the city in 2017 and cant wait to go back to visit again. Where can you go in the west and see a nation proudly fly the NATO flag.
