Growing up in the USA, I always thought bigger was better. I wanted cars with more space, more horsepower, and to live in a big house. Then I became a minimalist, and realized what the benefits were.

A home indeed owns you. I bought a mid sized house in a welsh country side (i am dutch). It is a good place to be during lockdown because of the countryside which invites you to go out and explore. I did a lot DIY at home to reduce running costs. In this way it becomes more an asset than a liability. Futhermore it is sufficiently small. No need for downsizing to free up liquidity in the future. I agree with investing money in different assets. Not all money should be locked up in the house. And keep things simple (choice of material such as aluminium) without much maintainance and care. I cook a lot myself. So my kitchen is a bit larger than shown in video. Nevertheless half the kitchen’s storage is used to keep manuals and diy tools. So i am not using the whole kitchen. Your tour on the kitchen was very recognizable. Looking forward to your next exploration in Thailand. Note i am a fan of the channel by Kirsten Dirksen. It gave me a lot if inspiration concerning DIY.

Agree with you mostly. I downsized from a 4,300 sqft SFH in the suburbs to an 1,800 soft townhouse in a city, and again to my current 1,100 soft apartment in a bigger city. Cost is slightly more, but we only have to have 1 car, only drive for out-of-town trips, and we can walk to 90% of our destinations. For the other 10%, we just bike or use transit that picks up within a block or two from home. Biggest limitation for us is NOT living space. There's plenty of that. It's space for hobby toys. Since we live in Seattle, our life is defined by outdoors sports. Skiing in winter, biking/kayaking/paddleboarding/hiking in summer. We also have a tiny teardrop camper. Our apartment is *big enough* to store all this gear, but it's a bit crowded at times. I love your lifestyle of 3 pairs of shoes, a few shirts, etc. and you're free to travel and live in different places. But my g/f hasn't FIREd yet, and we have chosen to spend most of our time with a routine, hanging out with friends, and doing stuff in our region. So having toys helps us to take full advantage of the amazing nature and seasons here in the PNW. So 350sqft would be a challenge for toy storage, but we could probably easily get by happily with 700 sqft.
@JohnnyFD
@JohnnyFD 2 ай бұрын
Hey great comment and thanks for sharing. Have you looked into getting a self-storage container or a shed for the toys? It would be much cheaper than having a bigger living unit just to house them.

I agree with your concept Johnny!. I lived in an efficiency apartment for many years, by myself. Moving forward, I have a 1750sft. home now. My dream is for 3000 square foot today, in Gulf Breeze Florida. One level, and inground pool. I have mobility issues, and would require the space. My Bishon pet and two additional family members would need the space. No need for an elevator. One level, and cardio workout with walking around my home with my roll later handicap appliance.

I can’t find another way to comment, family of 5 living in a 1125sqft house in Dublin, Ireland, normal rent on this property would be $3,000 per month now but we took out a mortgage and paid it off in 11 years by the ages of 36 and 37, it’s a very freeing feeling. The size of most houses here means that people do have to be mindful of stuff they accumulate because there is not so much storage space but it means keeping things that are a priority or bring you joy. I think that’s true across the rest of Europe too unless you live in a mansion.

I've been dreaming of living in a van since about 2010. I started traveling as a "digital nomad" in 2014, my intention was to do it for a year, then get a van and travel through Europe in the van. But I didn't end up returning from my travels, I'm still traveling now. So instead of doing vanlife, I started a website about it, which is now my main income source. So I'm still heavily involved in vanlife and the tiny house movement, without actually doing it.

i agree i briefly downsized when i moved, went from 1400 sw ft to renting 720 sq ft. and i grew to love the compactness, cheaper energy bills, and simplicity! Right now in a 1800 sq ft house for just me and 1 room mate, i regretted getting that big for years. once he moves out i plan to downsize. bigger isn't always better, that's just the american mentality. I'm all for simplicity and not being "house poor" btw "rent" aka mortgage for me is it's a home loan, so $1300.

Different modes, depends on what experiences you seek, and what is fulfilling. I spent months with a couple pairs of pants, couple shirts, travelling SEA and burning a backpack of film. But I'm now feeling claustrophobic in a 150m house because hobbies du jour are a lot more equipment-intensive (cnc mill, 3d printers, hydroponic pepper garden, etc.)

Some really valuable points in this video. "Freedom in living simply with convenience." That is what I understood from this video, but something you didn't bring up is guests. But then again, your guests would stay somewhere else and unburden you from entertaining them.Then there's kids. If you did get married and have a family, you'd have to have space for the kids. For right now in your life, this is ideal living. Great video! 👍 Sidebar: I would get a headache living in the Riviera, too gaudy..😂
@JohnnyFD
@JohnnyFD 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Milos! As for guests staying over, people waste so much money having a guest room that's almost never used. It'd be much cheaper for me to just pay for a nearby hotel or even a unit in my building once or twice a year when someone came to visit rather than pay for a 2 bedroom apartment that would go unused.

I like these investment evaluation options and you are doing a great jo but it only applies to the average joe. They are loads of people with fortune exceeding many life times and they should be at liberty to spend on the luxury that is specially made for them. A well to do westerner will always see spending on a luxury condo in the east as a bargain just as you value street food. Money is earned but also needs to be used before we outlive our useful life which is before 60yrs as per current life expectancy.

Bravo Johnny, Bravo! This is an excellent video for people to get a reality check. I loved every bit of it! I did trailer camping when I was young and space was small (400sf close to yours). Your place is great, but I would prefer a minimum of 600sf vs 400 (feels cramped/friends)! Of course, it would have to be just for a few extra bucks! Your friends couch, hot tub, and view sold me until I heard the price, eek-pass (But I'll take the couch & a 600sf place. Hot Tub would be nice)! I do think you forgot one thing to discuss and that is credit card debt! People have the big places, the fancy this and the fancy that! The latest this and the latest that and their CC's are maxed out, insane! When I bought my first house, I stayed within a reasonable, affordability! 2400sf is almost paid off with less than a year to go🍾🍾 ! The Gold watch is in sight (extra funds means travel to Europe next year approved)! RELAX!

Small is nice like apartments, tiny houses, van life, however wealth appreciation must be considered. The increased savings from reduced expenses can easily be spent on life, however when reaching retirement and needing protection from fewer life choices and the rat race, a nest egg (ownership) for the 99% is prudent. House and land is one of the best wealth appreciators for the 99%, greater than apartments or acreage (consider the leverage of $10k to buy $100k, which is so safe lending institutions are screaming and advertising to lend their money). In terms of practicalities and revenue opportunities to offset expenses include home automation, airbnb, vehicle renting out and more.

Houses in the UK tend to be smaller. When we go away in our caravan I enjoy the compact living. We still have a permanent bed, bathroom with walk in shower and a living/dining area and a well planned kitchen. We have China plates etc and have facilities to make a latte or expresso. Our beer is cold and we have all the channels on TV that we have at home streamed through our mobile phones. Easy to keep clean so we can just enjoy our days. Our dog is happy to be with us and we can turn on the air conditioning unit if he gets too warm. Our little home from home, but bought and paid for. We just pick where to go. Sounds boring but I assure you we travelled the world and we are now enjoying our own country. We are only limited by our holiday entitlement from our jobs. Going away is so affordable now. Johnny, I am one of those American who own and paid off his over 2200 sqft house in California. It was the best investment I had ever made to buy my house back in 2010. Now, I am a millionaire, if you just count the value of my house. Please don't steer your viewers away from making one of the most important investment in their life time, because you are running out of good ideas for your videos. Buying a house is the best way to force you to save your money every month via a mortgage. It will payoff as an invest everyday you live under your own roof and it will payoff down the road many years from now when you have paid off that mortgage and find that your house is worth much more than you had paid for it. Home ownership is the best, no matter if it is a big home like a 2200 sqft house or a small 300 sqft condo.

My parents will sadly leave their house soon (they’re 90s) and my dad asked me if I was interested in it. Hard no. Small spaces with minimal maintenance suit me too. Stopping again at 3:05… Another thing is if you want to be smart with your money the last thing you want to do is pay rent (unless it’s in a 3rd world country where you either can’t obtain or will have trouble getting a citizenship without going through an ordeal). Plus home ownership at least up until recently (pity for those looking to buy now) has been one of the best investments possible. And if you don’t have any mortgage debt you’re just sitting on a pile of cash (my house has increased in value almost 400% in just over a decade)…

Sure, it's a pleasant bonus for a short holiday, but that's mainly because you left all your stuff and hobbies behind, and have nothing better to do than sunbathe on a balcony. No, I can honestly say I'd rather have a big place with plenty of room for stuff and hobbies. For me, it's a more fulfilled life. It comes down to where you will spend the most time. Most people will only look at the amenities as they walk past them to go out. Living in Asia, I've found that many people value face to the point they'd sacrifice living space to show off amenities. For example, that sofa in the video in no way looks comfortable; I'd much prefer a cushy, longer sofa than cowbells next to the lobby. This works out great for me, as I have more living options that many won't consider of high value. So in a backhanded way, I support your value judgement ;-)

I like living small i have a 45 square meter (484 square foot) studio apartment. I hate cleaning and thats one big reason i dont have a bigger apartment. With so small apartment it does not take a long time to clean it. Another reason is price my rent is around 350 USD/month and water is included in that. My electricity bill is around 35 USD/month. So very cheap living cost over all. Allso i dont need a car because my work is only 5 minute bicycle ride away. Same goes for the convenience store. There is allso a nice pub/pizzeria right across the street. There is allso a big cym on the same street few minutes away. I can get a membership there cheap through my work if i want to. The town is allso located by a big lake so even the beach is close. Only con is that this is a small town in rural Sweden so there is not a lot to do. But i can always hop in a buss and take a ride to larger town 40 minutes away. I dont see my self moving any time soon. 🙂
