The names of the 7 Karl-Geräts were (in the order they were built): Baldur, Wotan, Odin, Thor, Loki, Ziu and Fenrir. Ziu is Old High German for Tyr. Baldur and Wotan were initially named Adam and Eva, however as part of the dejudaization efforts of the NSDAP they were later renamed to Baldur and Wotan.

Nothing like a massive 600mm Siege Mortar to blow away both the enemy and much needed resources. Bit it's, albeit inaccurate, depiction in Girls und Panzer Der Film was amazing as a boss type opponent the girls had to deal with. So thanks for showing those clips in addition to the rest of the ones used in the video. The Karl Gerat, an ambitious design, successful in some occasions, but ultimately a failure and a waste of resources.

As a fun fact ,one of the most well known photos from Warsaw Uprising, is that of a Karl Gerät shell hitting the tallest bulding in Warsaw at the time, 60m tall "Skyscraper", called Prudential. Photo captured exact moment, of the hit and explosion of the shell. Despite direct hit, bulding withstood it, due to being extreemly modern, build with a thick steel skeleton, that bended, but withstood the hit.

Just a bit of clarificaiton on the caliber of the Karl guns. While they may have been larger than the Yamato's 18" guns by bore diameter, they would have been shorter and the length of the barrel is also caliber. The caliber of large guns (typically 20mm and larger) are listed as Xmm (or inches) referring to bore diameer & Y caliber referring to barrel length. In this case, while saying that the Karl was a larger caliber gun than the Yamato's isn't entirely accurate, I think that putting in the caveat that they were shorter would have been good just to make it perfectly clear that the guns while bigger in terms of bore diameter, were shorter, otherwise some viewers might come away thinking that the Karl was larger all around than the 18" guns on the Yamato.

@@mbryson2899 If you're talking about this mortar, from what this video suggests it was designed and built before Hitler's obsession with Wunderwaffe and ever increasingly larger weapons systems. I'd also argue that this thing actually made a certain amount of sense. Remember, it was conceived totake out the Maginot Line, so you wanted something that could easily destroy the fortifications found there and do it from well outside of the Line's own artillery and guns. It's just that it proved to be ultimately unnecessary since the Germans simply went around the Maginot Line through the Ardennes.

As for the size - this gun is the logical development of the quite successful 42cm "Dicke Bertha" of WW1. Taking into account that the post WW1 forts in Belgium and France would likely be protected against that gun. It differes from Churchill AVRE in the ammunition. AVRE fired a concussion based shell for general demolition. These fired a specialist bunker buster (Röchling shell) to penetrate superheavy bunkers. A good example of two developments happening at the sme time. This mortar and modern mobile (tank) warfare where developed by different branches in the same time frame

Churchill AVRE was a practical British version if of a Mortar tank using a 290mm is 11.41 inches spigot mortar on a refitted mk3 or 4 Churchill hull. 700 were built roughly for the engineering. The round was 26 shells that weighed 40Lb called the “Flying Dustbin” & had 30 smoke shells generally for a A 2-inch bomb thrower/mortar attached to the turret roof. it also had 2 x 7.92mm (0.3 in) BESA machine guns so when not lobbing mortars it could still harass troops or small vehicles while lobbing smoke around for allied forces. Germans has the later 1943 Sturmtiger but the issue with the 380 mm RW 61 rocket launcher L/5.4 only has '14' rounds including the 1 in the barrel. A 7.92 mm MG 34 was fitted later but machine gun ports were not well designed as it was a second thought. Bothe the Churchill AVRE & Sturmtiger are quite comparable tanks bit only 18 of these German tanks were built on Tiger 1 chassis due to a lack of bearing for turrets which shows the desperation of late German designs due to shortages from allied bombing. Germans did everything to big not being practical in the slightest & the Sturmtiger had greater suspension & transmission issues then even regular tiger tanks which they are known for hence why many tigers never even saw combat. Panzer-5 "Panther" was the best German tank in my opinion for 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 with 79 rounds is a beautiful compact gun for the time that could penetrate anything the Allies had at 500meters & almost except the front of Churchill 6inch armour at 1000meters & the slanted portions of a KV-2 at the same distance mentioned though KV2 weakness was the boxy turret to house the massive gun but even with 110mm later 130mm it was still a big flat target unlike the hull. I wouldn't want to be with in 800meters of Panther in any allied tank. If the German built double the panthers instead of wasting their time on wonder tanks like the Maus & tiger then they could have kept the war going for at least another year I'd estimate. Mind history is history as they say?

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsqSturm Tiger has a massive gun but as an assault gun/tank destroyer the 300 Brummbär 10,000 odd Sturmgeschütz III, 2800 odd leichter Panzerjäger 38(t), 2000 Jagdpanzer IV, fewer shy of 1,300 StuH 42's & 1,141 Sturmgeschütz IV were far more impactful to war the 18 Sturm tiger or even the 80odd jadgtigers. People like big guns on big tanks but the main of the work was done by the more modest size assault guns that could be built in meaningful numbers. why the Germans made the 1350 odd of 1376 ordered conventional tigers shows 3rd Reich commanders living in fantasy over practicality. You thought they would have learned the lesson & not built the 2 Maus prototypes they made but hay at least German fan boys are happy for any tank game gets a dozen Mausers or some fantasy put in it ah? Britain with Ordnance QF 3-inch howitzer housed in Matilda II Mk IV Close Support & Matilda Mark III CS. I hate that they only ever depict Matilda's with 2pdr's when even the South African's & Aussies did the Same as British HQ as the war advanced in the pacific housing a 3 inch howitzer. They made a prototype of matilda with a 6pdr but Scorpion/mine layer Matilda's, frog's & hedgehogs were considered a better dedication of resources then swapping out 2pdr's with limited 6pdr's then stick in latter tank turrets that took less modification. The hedgehog was clever using pre-existing naval Anti-Submarine Projector 6 of these 65 lb spigot mortars strapped on a frame to the back of an ordinary Matilda. Churchill tank Mk I had 3inch in the hull as well as the turrets 2pdr. Churchill Mk IICS had howitzer in the turret and the 2pdr in hull. You have 17 base variant designations with in the 7mk's of British Churchill so it is quite confusing & why charts were made to explain to troops funnily. oh MK8-11 were improvement on previous Mk's in production that add more variation Crusader I CS to Cruiser Mk VI CS & Valentine tank Mk IIICS as well had a 3inch howitzer. Light Tank Mk VII Tetrarch had a few CS used in D-day to give the early war tank some extra use. Imagine firing a 3 inch gun in a little 7 & 1/2 ton tetrarch. Ordnance QF 95 mm howitzer would later fulfil the same role as the Ordnance QF 3-inch howitzer. USA assault guns are odd as they couldn't stettle on anything following French, Britain & then German designs till the settled on M4 105 mm howitzer, the M4(105) and the M4A3(105) a USA design which was simply shoving a 105mm in a Sherman! Howitzer Motor Carriage M8 I suppose but is more a motor gun carriage then an assault gun the like the British Churchill 3 inch gun carriage. M40 Gun Motor Carriage was a thing in end war ww2 only 1 saw action in Europe. Much the same story as the Pershing M26 300 were sent but only 20 saw action limited for the most part. M26 is really the USA's equivalent of the Churchill that never saw much action as the Atlantic is big pond! why the USA even bothered to design even heavier tank like the T28 at 86.2tons & others not as extreme from the Perishing's 41 & 1/4 tons is astounding in lack of consideration for logistics! To mention: Priest, Bishop and Sexton & all that but are SP not CS or motor gun carriages/MGT so why I didn't mention them for assault guns. I might have gone on tangent Johnny but most outside of conventual Armour/tank role such as MBT ww2 main tanks specialised armour such as SPG, MBT & CS et cetera is something not many discuss or talk about ARV's/armoured recovery vehicles, AA & gun tractors. The Germans had what can only be described as a fetish for huge guns. The largest railway ever built was the 80cm Gustav. It required 25 trainloads of equipment and six weeks to assemble which included the extra track. In fact to get it there required specially relaid track. It required 2,000 men and was commanded by a general. It was used a Sevastopol where in 13 days, the guns entire active career, it fire just 48 shell. Luftwaffe reconnaissance showed that, compared with the bombs dropped, it made little difference to the siege. It was one of three built and the cost was such that it could have paid for some 250 sturmgeschutz.

Nice article but an underling fact is the Karl-Gerat and Gustav were both prime examples of mismanaged resources by Germany. Material and manpower needed to support one of these guns was equal to several batteries, 3 - 4 guns per battery, from 8.8 to 1.28 CM, which would of been more practical. Especially given the fact during inter war years German High Command had already developed and refined the concept of "Blitzkrieg" where mobility was king. But Hitler being a WW1 soldier felt monster guns like this were a necessity and did a lot to promote their development.

Apples, Oranges and Bratwurst. Karl is the WW2 take on the 42cm "Dicke Bertha" and was initiated by the industrie based on that guns usage in WW1. It is the more developed and mobile variant of that. DORA was Viagra for the lil Fuhrer. 88 or 128mm guns have a totally different usage profile to both (direct fire artillery) and would be ineffective against the Maginot main Jack turrets

How did it impact enemy moral? Just imagine a regular day in war and then suddenly a giant explosion, but no plane dropped that bomb.... Then you realise that the enemy has absurdly large siege weapons... I'm pretty sure though that it must have been quite vulnerable to counter battery fire. It's a very huge and slow target after all and its range was not impressive...

By the time you bring that in the enemy is reduced to his fortress guns. That are even less mobile. And counter-battery in the 1930s time frame was "accoustic/flash" detection not Radar. So a lot slower and less precise.

1:16 that's the whole point of the Maginot line. They didn't go around it, the Germans were forced to go around it. If the Belgians had allowed the Maginot line to run through their country too then it would have run through to the coast leaving only the small part of the Ardennes undefeated which the French SHOULD have been able to easily counterattack through or bomb the attacking Germans along the single road
