Plastic cuffs are actually in use, by the way. They're basically just zip ties in a special configuration, but because they're so cheap, they're a logical choice if you're going into a situation where you expect to have dozens of detainees.

The zip ties or cable ties that the police use have small metal tabs in the locking mechanism to ensure a stronger hold. One can still be able to escape from them if so motivated. Metal cuffs with the chain links can also be broken rather easy.
