I would have looked at gearbox from an HPi savage. The gears are metal from the factory, it has a 3 speed upgrade option and it’s already designed to be mounted between frame rails. I would have kept the slipper clutch, it takes the shock out of the gears on the upshift since there is no other place to allow slippage to soften the shock load.

Ever think about building a turbocharger? They make mini turbocharger keychains that are actually functional and rated for heat/flow. It's got a turbine housing, connected turbine and compressor wheels and everything. I think it'd be awesome.
@danielwitham17917 ай бұрын
Second this... Maybe not the keychain one unless they're already balanced and capable of tens of thousands of RPM. Might be quicker to find something else or start from scratch (which would be extremely involved and likely too difficult). All in all I'd love to see a miniature turbo V8 or even less cylinders in an RC car 😀

@danielwitham17917 ай бұрын
I also did this. The unplanned 1st gear delete mod is only good for powerglide skids in Aus burnout cars. 130+mph wheel speeds, with blown, methanol sucking 600-1200+HP, 1k+ torque V8s that skip first gear no worries are way off topic. Bed time 😅

Here's my two bit: Ditch the gearboxes. Too much hassle with them. Switch to V-belt pulleys. Modify a quality servo to not have a stop (continuously spun either direction, preferably one with a very smooth output) and connect it directly to the V pulley set that's adjusted to make the belt slip inner or outer more. If it works for really fast engine (via clutch) it will work just fine for this. You can use a square fiber reinforced rubber gasket for this to mimic an actual V belt. If you look them up in a catalog, you'll likely find something in an application with high pressure (they're made to work so that pressure doesn't stretch them, which is what you want for a drive like this, and its squareness will allow the drive cones to make it work properly vs a round section one. I'm betting it would work better than a geared variant because unlike a geared box, a cone drive doesn't suffer from inertia, which is your biggest enemy when it comes to gears at this size. Too light, and they shatter or get chewed if they move too fast, too heavy and you bend things when the gears mesh.
