Shuter Street through the "Dangerous" Moss Park | Toronto Walk

I've lived in Toronto all my life, worked downtown for 30 years, but have never been along Shuter past Bond. Thanks for the tour, there is alwsys sonething to learn about our city.

I could shed a tear right now watching this video. I grew up in the moss park projects shuter st ,16th floor in the 90s. So many lessons & memories even though the area looks different, wouldnt trade my childhood for nothing. RIP Yonathan Musse

Missed your vid but I remember a past Moss Park vid where you were recognized by several friendly people during the incident- free walk. During the day, it seems, it's totally an enjoyable walk

On the opposite side of the street fro the cooper anne gillespie houses used to be a massive parking lot that went all the way to queen. But now they are installing five condoes into that space. I don't know what used to be in that block before the parking lot. Its was there forever! As long as I can remember.

Regent Park. This is a great example of years gone by of the heart of early industrial land and workers with an obvious newer infusion of modernization. Would never have 'felt' this area if it wasn't for this tour Johnny...ty

At thethe Moss Park Armory you will sometimes see military vehicles stationed there for parades and remembrance day. They also occasionally stage weapons such as large howitzers to transportthem for specialised repairs in that facility. on the Queen side there are two 25lb guns from WWII gracing the front entrance of the building! They have had thearmored cars and transports stored there for PR events at dundas square.

The house on the cvorner of Jarvis and sherbourne used to be a funeral home in the late 1800 or early 1900's and the building justbe fore that house on Shuter used to be the stables for the horses for the funeral home. There is actually a real estate tour on youtube of that former stable. search by the address and it will pop up. Apparently, they used to have a lift and kept the horses in the upstairs (Can''t confirm this, I was told about it by a local resident). if you watch the property tour you can see some of the hardware for the lifts on the walls. Or go look for the property on redfin or zollo.

THere is a large TCHC housing complex on the west dalhousie just north of Shuter. Back in the 1980's there used to be a skating rink that later became a roller rink before it was toron down. There was a plan to replace the roller rink at jarvis and dundasbut it fekk through due ti a lack of funding to construct it I the space 9Which sat empty for decades afterwards and almost ended up as a storage facility) where MLSE eventually installed their youth sports complex in that TCHC owned property. Oh what might have been. I remember roller skating at the dalhousie rink when I was going to universioty.

What saddens me is the lack of landscaping around the newer buildings. One side of the street and side streets have interesting old architecture with accompanying greenery. The other seems bleak. Haven't been around there in years. Keep it up!

Just north of jarvis and shuter on the west side is Haven a seniors club for low income men. unofficially know as the old man's club. they serve discount meals for breakfast and lunch and an afternoon snack for a few dollars each and provide services such as showers, clothing and toiletries for seniors 55 and older. They also have community bar-b-ques on holidays

Interesting video of a part of central Toronto that I rarely go to. I once had a project that involved on-site reviews of the interiors of the Moss Park and the old Regent Park apartments for the former Metro Toronto Housing Authority, was surprised at how clean the interior common areas were in these buildings. I didn't have any trouble from the residents but was concerned about vehicle security (at Regent park, I parked beside the central heating plant building, I figured that with the maintenance workers being present during the day, my vehicle stood a chance of being reasonably safe). I also made it a point to be finished and off the site before dark (at the time of the year, this would have been 4:00 PM or so).

They displaced the residents so far from where the original low-income townhouses were that it was almost impossible for them to maintain their original jobs close to the new buildings and therefore found new jobs and never came back - so from the developers and the city's v9iewpoint mission accomplished. Love to see the real numbers of original Regent residents that actually ended up coming back and living in those new buildings.

They were supposed to renovate the community center (John Inglis I think) at Moss Park but the funding fell through and the community did not support it because of the potential removal of the tennis courts.

A lot of people were pushed out of Regent and moved to other projects, were not given the opportunity to get one of the new condos. So it really wasn't a fair trade for many.

We need a new hospital. It should be at parliament and shuter. THere is an empty field there that they are supposed to (Yeah right....Doug for build a catholic school nah!) build a school here but I think It would be a great place for another hospital. We have increased the density of the surrounding area and only marginally increased the number of hospital beds. They do have a major expansion and renovation of st, Mikes but IU think they would be better served putting a hospital in the parliament and shuter area to serve the local neighborhood and meet its specific needs and reduce the pressure on St. Mikes.

Hey, Toronto, here in the US, shelter inflation has led to a whole movement of making trailers, RVese, even vans as "shelter". In watching Toronto walking videos, I've never seen a mention of this sort of bailout to vehilcles as "homes". Is this a trend that the common border filters out in the lifestyle area. Also "tiny houses" on wheels. Very creative. Alina McLeod says here single basement room is something like $1700 CAD. That is mind boggling. So it just makes me wonder. Clearly free market capitalism in NOT meeting the most basic need.

The whole area around Moss Park gets a bad reputation, but it's still a far cry from many American cities I've witnessed. Even East Hastings in Vancouver is worse.

@@JohnnyStrides 8 murders have already taken place there already this year and only 20,506 people live the area, giving Moss Park a homicide rate of 39.01 per 100,000 people, and the year hasn't even ended yet my friend, we still got 3 more months to go...
