Still listening to this in 2021, just about to be 2022! This is from the time when I was about to be touring with Edgar on his Frankenstein tour. (Sound engineer) I did sound for both Johnny and Edgar at different times, but (unfortunately) not together as they were here. Great musicians.

These brothers were seriously great. Johnny had his band and toured the world doing his thing while Edgar had his band and toured the world doing his thing. It's so nice reading the reviews and comments from the other Golden Triangle folks who, like me, grew up there in the 60's and 70's. We were so blessed. Many of us got to enjoy these guys, and Janis, and Gatemouth, and George Jones. I went from there to Austin after Lamar and just kind of took it for granted that this was how you lived your life, surrounded by great music. What a blessing KZbin is so others can get a taste of what we had.

@@ReclaimingMyChillTime I was 15 when we moved to Texas. The last thing I did on the way out was see Jethro Tull at Cobo Hall, first concert. 1972. And the first, second and third concerts when we hit Dallas... Leon Russell, Elton John, and Joe Cocker and at 67, I have stories for days. A thousand concerts later at a George Thorogood concert with Billy Bob Thornton's blues band being second act and some little blues band from East Texas opening, and Billy Bob sending his roady over to invite me back stage (I was 50) ... Naw, I'm good... George was my draw and he didn't disappoint. I bought the cheap ticket. After about 40 I went to most concerts alone so I didn't have to waste attention wondering if the person I was with was enjoying themselves instead of just enjoying everything for myself. And thinking I'm getting nose bleed at the HOB. First in line and asked where, and he said "Floor" and I about fell out. Belly up to the Bar Boys, leaning on the stage, front and center and George played his guitar in my face. ✋ I was a complete grown up adult when I realized not everybody had that experience even being the same age. I found out that Dallas had its own recording industry and everybody flew through or to Dallas and played. School night concerts, weekend night concerts, weekend three day concerts. Back to back to back because all of them were dropping albums daily and needed exposure. Led Zeppelin, ZZ top, Waylon Willie and the boys, Luckenbok Austin, Houston, El Paso, Amarillo all within driving distance with their own celebrations. And not just me. My Mom sent us all back to Detroit for Bob Seger concerts, and Christmas present concert tickets, Donna Summer at Fair Park, and the Allman brothers 1000 times and gimmee three steps sung at maximum volume and FreeBirds flying off the movie screen and "attention everybody, don't do the purple haze acid. Somebody mixed up a bad batch, in 100° heat... And of course, you never know you are living in history being made because nothing like this had ever happened. From rock and roll to women's rights to being able to work without getting your ass pinched, I would not trade a single yesterday for any other decades that followed but for the extension of my life that followed. Because without the 70s the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and 20s would not make sense. Thanks for responding and allowing me to share first hand information about the glue that held us together 😘

Dig the way he plays some of the same licks on sax that were featured in his earlier organ solo. Gifted cats. Maybe because of camera or mic placement, Johnny's guitar dominates the mix. But that's a good reason to appreciate his complimentary rhythm guitar chops and smoking solo. Johnny plays cool lines in context with the chord structure and weaves them seamlessly. His solos never get repetitive. Listen to 30 seconds of any SRV solo and you've heard every lick he knew.

My first exposure to Johnny Winter was around 1967 (edit: 1969) in south Florida at the Seminole Indian Music Festival. It was a 3 day event with The Youngblood’s, NRBQ, Quicksilver... this particular night the announcer said “. We’ve got a guy here who is not scheduled to play tonight but he wants to play and get his name spread around so we’re gonna let him play for a while....here is is Johnny Winter”. Yes, we stood there in awe and history was made

I started saxophone as a kid and have been playing professionally all my life, when I first saw Edgar play sax when I was 14 yrs old I was totally blown away by his saxophone playing (not to mention every other instrument). Even if saxophone was his only instrument, he was still one of the best players in this style EVER in the history of the horn in my opinion. But listening to this recording which I'd never heard before, I'm STILL totally blown away with his amazing ability on the horn!! Pure soul and amazing technique all over the instrument!! Best R&R alto player ever. True genius! Show less REPLY

Popular music experienced an evolutionary leap during this era. From a few sturdy blues roots it just improbably exploded, and no one had ever heard or played anything quite like it before. That was what made it so exciting for so many. This completely marvelous clip from 50 years ago is a wonderful example.
