My dad died in February. When planning his memorial service, I went through his playlists to start making a playlist for the memorial. When I opened up the app, this was the last song he had listened to. It took me three months to work up the courage to listen to it. I was expecting it to be a sad song, and instead was greeted with a joyful song about enjoying things and forgiving people. Which is exactly the kind of thing Dad would have wanted for us. I'm so glad this was the last song he chose to listen to. It feels like it was his way of saying he'll be okay. I miss him so much. Tonight, I'm having a cocktail of vodka and ginger ale. Here's to you pops.

I wish I could heart your comment. My dad was born February 29th and he died January the month before he turned 40. He was a leap year baby so that year was going to be extra special we thought. His attitude was at least as happy as this song was. He had a terminal illness but never once did he make it a part of our lives. Our Dad was our dad and we knew he had a ticking time bomb but we didn't know when and he treated it as if he would always be there but gave us so much in the time he had.. He was a huge music person and music even made it to his headstone. He died in 1988. During his funeral I had to leave because I HAD to be anywhere but there. My aunt walked with me in my yard while playing Pink Floyd. I had also lost a sister . She was 15 and had gotten meningitis. All of a sudden. She felt ill and within the weekend she died. When she died my father could not go to her funeral. It was too much and he also walked the yard we lived during her funeral.

Mom Transcended Dec 23, 2018. This song found me a few days after her service for the first time. John was our guy. Anytime we rode together..She would have the CD Ready to go. And we would sing. Just like when I was a kid. This one helped me so damn much. I laughed till I cried. She had metastatic Lung cancer and quit smoking. So She Definitely Smoke a Cigarette 9 miles long.. probably 2😂. She sent me a message this morning..and this song popped right back in my head. It's fitting that He moved on shortly after. She still sings with me. Damn I miss our laughing till we need inhailers.. We talked every single day for hours about the dumbest shit..Love &Hugs to all of you who know. And to all of you who dont. Treasure Every Single Second Like we did. ❤

My dad just passed on August 10th. He had blood cancer. Had a bone marrow transplant in May that failed. Every complication he could have gotten, he did. From the chemo, from the transplant, from the lack of immune system. He got a booster transplant in June and that also failed. He was living through hell. He had one last chance of trying a third transplant of cord blood, but his liver started failing and the doctor had to take that option off the table. They loaded him up with an extra unit of blood and gave him a life expectancy of 4-5 days. Oddly enough, he seemed happier after hearing that. Knowing that his suffering would soon be over. He was a prine fan for as long as I can remember. We listened to this song several times in those last 4-5 days, along with so many other great Prine songs. He made it to day 6... my dad never was one to follow rules. I have a little peace knowing he is up there helping John with that 9 mile long cigarette... exchanging stories and having a hell of a party. Rest in peace Dad. "If you aren't livin on the edge, you're taking up space" 💗

My dad would always play Prine when we were little, usually on our way to our camping trips. I couldn’t stand the sound. He was just some old geezer that my dad listened to. But I some point when I grew into my teenage years. Maybe because I started listening to the words instead of tuning out. Then out of nowhere I was convinced John was my favorite artist. I am 21 now and my sweet girlfriend got me tickets to my first concert on may 23rd for his Louisville concert. I am heartbroken I couldn’t see him before he passed. But i am blessed to know a wonderful artist. I hope his family are okay, just one request for them, please don’t bury him down in the cold cold ground!

This is for all of those grieving in the comment section: no one ever truly dies. Your loved one is present, talk to them, they will talk back within their own capacity. That may be though the remembrance of a song, the appearance of a butterfly, or even finding a penny with their birth year or something along those lines. They are here helping you move mountains. The song just shows to prove John's ultimate talent, he was a poet. Pure genius in poetry. Break down anything he sings and that is what it is, poetry. And he is in fact one of the best poets of all time.

John Prine, one of the most underrated musicians who kept our neighbors up while we kept partying away! Grandpa was a carpenter ( mine was), Please don't bury me, Sam Stone, Illegal Smile, anything off the Sweet Revenge album, the list goes on....Hang in there John, you haven't written one about how much Disco sucked yet! Looking at my torn and tattered Sweet Revenge album how I wish I had a turn table, the scratches in it reminds me of a better time. Thank you John and please get well

He’s in heaven right now drinking vodka smoking a 9 mile long cigarette and hanging out with his family, he’s busy hosting the tree of forgiveness, He’s with his band playing for god, and most of all he’s gunna kiss that pretty girl. We miss you John.
