Hello! I attended the summer at Hopkins program for two years, so I figured I might as well apply as a first year student. My stats aren’t nearly as stellar as a majority of the applicants, thus I’m relying on this supplemental to help carry me through. Since I want to major in biological sciences (more specifically go on their pre-med track), my idea was to write about the unique classes and clubs that my high school offered (biotechnology and women in stem club), what I learned from them, similar programs at Hopkins, and how I can integrate these skills into those programs. I also slipped in the mention of summer at Hopkins lol. That’s how mine is coming along!

Hi vic, Nice sounds promising. With 11% acceptance rate it will be a long shot it seems but you should definitely go for it. I would consider starting with a mini story of you actually in action in one of these clubs or classes that you will mention to show you engaging in them and then go into the explanation. good luck! and yes make sure you offer up takeaways and lessons learned that you would bring to JH. Good luck

loved your video super helpful 💗 i am an Air Force jrotc student and one of the only left leaning students within the program. I wanted to start with when I first knew I was out of place (I was the only vegan), when I was looked down on for being one of the few females, and then describe how I am now the commander and re organized the program so no student has to feel the way I did. Continuing with how johns hopkins will inspire me to not feel out of place in the stem community. I’m afraid of being generic feeling “left out” or perhaps not doing the “why us” part well enough. I would love your thoughts :))
@WriteYourAcceptance2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. First I would consider shifting the language less to knowing you were out of place and more like feeling you were out of place....maybe even play with the image/ idea of a fish out of water then go into your list of othering details (things that make you different)...I really like you dedicating time to how you helped restructure the organization so that belonging and diverse perspectives and people were appreciated...then I would shift the language again and say that you learned how you have to be active in finding where you belong...feeling left out doesn't only just happen to you, you can go out and find your place and you will do that at JHU through (here put the why us part). Good luck!

Hey! I wish I saw this before I submitted the essay because this was definitely helpful. I wrote along the interest line, as I want to major in Political Science. I used an analogy about a squirrel walking on an electric wire in my backyard with two options: life or death. But, put a spin and asked a question to the reader: "What if the power to choose his fate was out of his hands?" I then talked about wrongful convictions within our justice system and how I aim for judicial reform, and I plan to use JHU as an asset to develop as an individual to get there. I mentioned clubs, classes, and a professor I would love to do research with. Let me know your thoughts! My stats, grades, and extracurriculars are okay, but not spectacular (1440 SAT, 32 ACT, 4.3 GPA), so regardless the school is a longshot, but I had a lot of fun writing this essay :)

Hey Steven, sounds like a really cool essay. I love when students start with something seemingly innocuous and inject depth and a personal connection. Sounds like you did that while adding very specific content from JHU. Wishing you lots of luck!! How many schools did you apply to?
@SCurfman2 жыл бұрын
@@WriteYourAcceptance Thank you! I applied to 29 (hear me out). I did 4 UCs and 3 Cal States because my school really advocates for us to apply there, a few target schools (UMich, Georgetown, Grinnell College, W&L), around 7-8 safety schools to give myself variety and room to explore different routes, and then the rest consisted of reach schools I don’t anticipate acceptance from (including JHU). Although I definitely feel the number was excessive, I only ended up paying close to $600 total and $490 of that number came from the UCs/CSU, and I was granted ~21 fee waivers! My indecisiveness definitely also contributed😂 Aside from that, I want to look back in the future and know that I applied everywhere I wanted to, and take every chance with no regrets, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, for most people.

Hello! Do you think it would be fine to write my JHU supplemental as a descriptive use of what research I would conduct at hopkins, while my common app essay is more “story-like” and shows off my creative side? I’m submitting my application tonight. I was told my CA essay is very strong - so hopefully they see my creative abilities in the CA essay? The “why Hopkins/what I will get from Hopkins” has always been centered around my research on the new frontier of RNA editing therapy (with observational uses on CRISPR therapy.) Will this be detrimental to my application - since it isn’t ‘flowy’ and it’s more articulate?
@WriteYourAcceptance3 жыл бұрын
Yes but remember it is not just a why JH it is - Use this space to share something you’d like the admissions committee to know about you (your interests, your background, your identity, or your community), and how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins. (300-400 words) So make sure you focus on how you have started that research what about the research is top priority for you as you continue into undergrads then include why JH. Good luck!

Hello, My common app is about my journey moving across the world alone at such a young age. I wasn't to relate my natural hair journey to my interests in STEM at Hopkins but I'm not entirely sure how to do that. I feel like I have such "unique" experiences, that I almost feel like very little people can understand me, especially cause I'm an immigrant.
@desireepraise71512 жыл бұрын
Hello, my common application essay talks about a difficult situation in my life and how it affected me.. is it okay for me to continue writing about this experience in detail for my JHU essay? My common app essay explains the events leading up to it and emotions i was experiencing at the time and my JHU essay talks about what they died from, how it impacted me, and I used the cause of death as an answer to “why JHU”. I would love if you proof read it and gave me pointers.
@WriteYourAcceptance2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would not continue to write about the same topic because you are not allowing yourself to show different aspects of who you are, how you grow and what you value. Is there anything else you want to share about you that shows cultural diversity, diversity of thought, intellectual curiosity, social awareness, service, or leadership? You don't have to cover all of this in one essay but your app should have a little bit of all of this throughout...it seems like you show social awareness and resilience in your main essay. I like that you are thinking about the situation through a different lens, but anything of value, worthy of sharing I would capture it in the common app essay and then do this on a totally diff topic. Good luck.

Do you think this is a good essay topic? If so, any ideas on how I could include the why JHU part?
@WriteYourAcceptance2 жыл бұрын

Hi Dr. Josie, my essay is wayyyy over word limit as trying to fit any background and why hopkins. Also by background can I use a mental illness a family member has? Do you have any advice? also should I use Hopkins, John Hopkins, or JHU? Thank you!!
@WriteYourAcceptance3 жыл бұрын
First the easy part. I would write our Johns Hopkins full out the first time then you can use whatever abbreviation you want. I would keep it uniform throughout. For word count - I would look at the essay through percentages. ideally it can be something like 60-65% of the essay is personal background then 35-40% why JH...start cutting out background to the background story meaning make sure that every sentence advances your point. what is unnecessary info the reader doesn't need? also the mental illness detail is tricky not only because it is a sensitive topic but you want to make sure you are speaking about you, how you have taken action, learned, grown etc...good luck!

hi there! so you have other options to write about - you can share about your interests, your identity, most important is connecting it to how it informs what you want to get out of your college experience. Make sure you think about your main essay and this supplement holistically, meaning introduce a new dimension to who you are in this essay that they don't really get in the main essay.

What kind of extracurriculars are regarded as an advantage in one's admission forms in jhu applications?
@adanfatima64172 жыл бұрын
If a person wants to pursue something related to sciences or literature in Johns Hopkins would you recommend them to do extracurriculars which fall under the heading of business or stuff like that or is it sort of useless since it won't have any value if written in the admission form since that is not a person's interest or what they want to pursue at Johns Hopkins or should we still do those extracurriculars and mention them in our form just in case?
@WriteYourAcceptance2 жыл бұрын
Hi Adan, great question. What I would say is that you want to seek out EC's that are of interest to you. They dont have to neatly line up with your intended major, they should offer you opportunities of learning and growth beyond the classroom. So it is definitely not useless...thinking about experiences as a way to connect with diverse professionals and learning in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment is always a great thing. Are you applying soon or not yet and thinking about which activities to get involved with?
@adanfatima64172 жыл бұрын
@@WriteYourAcceptance I am not applying as of now but I wanted to streamline the type of EC's I wanted to do so that I am not overwhelmed doing a lot of activities which probably won't really help me out in my college applications but instead start opting for those which could play as an advantage instead. Thanks for your advice :)

@@adanfatima6417 gotcha yes definitely be intentional about your ECs but I would do what you really want to engage and not let your decisions be affected by what should be in your app...if you engage in activities that you really find valuable you’ll let that passion come through which is what you want

Approximately 10% of the incoming international freshmen received need-based scholarships.
