@@johnsangl No, I still have some burrs still left on the tree. I was going to wait and see how long it took for them to drop naturally. I will give them another week and twist them off if they haven't fallen on their own.

@johnsangl Жыл бұрын
Thank you. The blind saw it's first harvest this past Fall. The Hazelnuts were grown from seed purchased from Burnt Ridge Nursery out of Washington. They are a combination of "Jefferson" & "Yamhill". English White Oak acorns are obtained from a private local source.

Ash trees that die from the Emerald Ash Borer do not stump sprout. They produce huge numbers of seeds so the forest floor has tons of small seedlings.

Hello. Love your videos! Where do you get your Perry chestnuts from? Also I would love if in your videos you touched more on the ages of your trees as you are talking about them. It is awsome to look at your trees and think of where we might be in a few years. Thanks for the awesome videos!!!

I'll definitely focus more on mentioning the age of the trees. I got my Perry Hybrid Seedling trees from Route 9 Cooperative in Carrolton, OH.

There are all sorts of strategies to deal with chestnut weevils. One I saw on youtube dealt with putting tarps beneath the trees to prevent larvae from reaching the ground. I wonder if that works. Another possibility is using entomopathogenic nematodes such as Heterorhabditis indica. I do have curculio plum weevils that have wiped out my plum crop and I will have to do something about that. About the only plums that do well in the deep south relative to survival are the native Chickasaw plums and hybrids of them. I know the acorns on the local trees are infested with weevils. But think that they are different from those that go after chestnuts.
@johnsangl2 жыл бұрын
That’s a lot of tarps!

@@johnsangl If you only have a couple of trees some 6 mil plastic will do. The question is does it work? It was on a prepper site, patriot nurse I think and she and her family bill themselves as Jewish Hillbillies. Actually for the southeastern mountains of what is now Georgia and carolinas also into alabama in the late 16th century and into the 17th century Sephardic jews fleeing the inquisition that is supported by genetic studies took refugee in the southern mountains, but that is a completely different topic.

How old are your trees
@richardduggar46652 жыл бұрын
I think I planted them in 2017. They are dunstans from Walmart and were about 6 feet tall. Still waiting for the second tree to produce 🌰. I had about 100 fertilized nuts. The last 30 to 40 burs to drop were all unfertilized.

If you have chestnut boring bugs, I leave my trees as multiple trunks if they come up that way. This protects the tree from being killed completely , in most cases with my trees.
@johnsangl2 жыл бұрын
The weevils don’t bore into the tree as far as I know. I have seen a moth caterpillar that bores in Europe/Middle East, also Ambrosia can kill trees in a similar manner.
@twintwo14292 жыл бұрын
@@johnsangl correct about the weevils. Some of the boring beetles enter the tree, out on a limb, then travel under the bark down low in the trunk. If you get enough of them, the damage essentially girdles and kills the tree. Some of the close ups of your trees, revealed the vein like trails of these bugs. They usually enter the tree in spring and the damage is done by early summer, if the infestation is bad. Mostly affects young trees, 2-5 years old. None of our trees larger than 6" in diameter have died. Zero trees with multiple trunks have died completely, only single trunk trees of smaller diameter have been completely killed above ground. Most will come back from the roots.

Have you had any luck using a nut wizard to pick up the burs? Or have you heard of them? Might save your back a little! Inspiring as always man, can't wait until my orchard starts looking like that.
@johnsangl2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried it yet, but my understanding is it is better at picking up nuts outside the bur. Since most of these were still inside the bur, i don’t think it would solve my problem.

Deer will often re- rub trees so that tree is gonna have a rough go of it, atleast protect the trees that they have selected, cause in a few more yrs they will probably be to big for deer to prefer them unless you got some giants
@johnsangl11 ай бұрын
It was definitely becoming the community rubbing tree - I caged it last year.

I know you answered it before but I can't remember, is there no issue with cross pollination between your different varieties?
@johnsangl2 жыл бұрын
Most of my chestnuts have a common theme of some degree of Chinese(mollissima) genetics, so most should do well. There is some evidence that some of the Euro(sativa) x Japanese(crenata) crosses can result in Internal Kernel Breakdown(IKB). I don't have those trees.

Are the nuts you're picking cross pollinated with potentially any chestnut tree you have? Who knows their parent tree right? Cool!

I have performed any dedicated cross-pollination at this point. All trees are open-pollinated.
