I bought one of these recently, hauled a motorcycle 300 miles, it was shaking so bad I thought a hook would pop loose any moment... Sure enough the last the quarter mile of driving (which is down a pot holed dirt road) I hit a big bump and watched in the rear view mirror as my bike tipped over. Luckily I was going like 2 mph and didn't damage anything (its a dirt bike it falls all the time lol). Definitely adding a deck to the trailer cause that was a terrifying drive home lol. I could see cars staying back from my trailer, probably out of fear lol.

it's a misconception that those bearing buddy caps are packing the bearings, which they are not. they're just squirting grease into the cap. I would still take the hubs off and grease and pack the bearings at least once a year
@johnsciarra6 жыл бұрын
Brendan, this is true, but it uses a spring pressure mechanism to force grease in and keep water out. The grease should go farther than the cap-- And if you hit it with the grease gun once in a while you may be able to keep the thing lubed for the duration. If the axle ever needs work, I would just replace it with proper grease-zerk fitted bearings.

The plywood is one soild board or two? is it bolted to the underneath metal?
@johnsciarra6 жыл бұрын
Shane Audet , the plywood is one piece, the side pieces are boards, I bolted The plywood down through the tie down rings to the frame. At first I just used self tapping screws to hold it down. But putting a bolt and nut through the tiedown rings and then the frame was much more secure for the rings and it also held the plywood down as an added benefit. @johnsciarra5 жыл бұрын
....Usually the first number is the width/aspect ration (4 inches) and the second number is the wheel diameter (8.0 inches). It is hard to say what you have, it could be 4.8 inches wide/aspect ratio for a 8 inch wheel, most likely. That is a pretty common trailer tire. Most important is to determine the wheel or rim diameter-- so get a ruler and measure that. From that point, you can compare apples to apples. Most 8 inch tires will fit on most 8 inch rims. The tire in this video is a 12 inch rim, so any 12 inch trailer tire will be close. Again this trailer takes very common tires: 480-12 (480 aspect ratio, 12 inch wheel). Hope this helps.

Your gonna regret the plywood flooring. I used decking Lumber. Its virtually made for being outdoors and with a good stain job every 5 years its now been on my trailer for 22 years. Bolt it down with carriage bolts at both ends and every cross member. The eye hooks are useful but again your gonna regret mounting them where you did. You'll realize this when your wanting to slide a piece of plywood over the rails or something heavy and bulky. Not to mention my little trailer also doubles as an outside work bench just by angling a piece of plywood over the rails. If your lucky maybe you can use the holes you drilled in your rails as your tie down points but im really against drilling holes in the rails. ( just looks weird to me). Your box is ok, I just hope you didn't drill holes through the trailer tounge to mount it. (Holes invite rust ) and if you drilled all the way through the tounge, well you weakened the integrity of tounge strength. So for all you young men out there reading this I hope I've given you a different perspective on how some of these things are really not as good as they seem to be. Porch decking, no holes drilled in the tounge, nothing protruding up from the rails. Plywood is a waste of time and money. Don't drill holes in the tounge ( not sure he did but just saying) .
@johnsciarra3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments, I agree with everything you say. I did the plywood as a example of a low budget/ light weight solution. For the equipment box I did not drill through the tongue, but used a U-bolt to secure it. The same kind I used to secure the spare tire. As for the ring bolts/eyelet bolts that I attached to the rails, I have found these very handy when securing loads with ratchet straps or bungee cords. They are an easy place to hook onto and they don’t allow the ratchet strap to slide around. If you have to secure a load with five or six ratchet straps/bungees, the eyelets become very handy. Ratchet straps should not be secured around angle iron unto itself as it will abraid the strap, and ruin it.🙂

Five or six years and then dispose? Don't sell it short! I had one of those trailers for 20 years. I'd rust-treat and repaint each spring, maybe every other year. Do I need to register and license plate this trailer
@johnsciarra7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Christensen , in Florida all the trailers have to have a license plate. It’s very easy just take the title to the tag agency pay some money, and you get the license plate. I know in some other states trailers don’t require tags. I guess you just have to check on the Internet what’s specific to your location.

Example: In TN, if the trailer is being towed within the state by a TN tagged vehicle, it doesn't need tags. Applies to utility trailers used for non-commercial enterprise. If towed out of state, tags are required. AZ requires tags but they are for the lifetime of the utility trailer. Other states want registration every year - money to be made.

@@danburch9989 You can get a Maine trailer license by mail. Good in any state, and no inspection required.

That’s funny. Obviously, it depends on where you live. Check the laws in your state, man. Most places, you do have to register.

Thats bullshit - yeah ok 4x8 treated plywood -But The 1x8 treated wood - BULLSHIT it thick for the 4x8 plywood for one thing And also you have to use a 1x6 Not treated and Not a 1x8 for the side.-----For a 5x8 trailer.....

Mr. About horses, I am just showing you what fit on this trailer, and what was easiest. The side planks were 8 footers, but I think they were 6 inches wide, not one foot. I used what was available at the home center on that day, and tried boards until I found ones that fit. A single sheet of plywood would be best if you could find it in that size.

@@johnsciarra After thinking about it a little bit, I guess one thing you could do is run the plywood sideways, and cut to length. That said, there’s nothing wrong with the way you did it.

What kind of bullshit comment is that? Who gives a shit if the boards on the sides are slightly thicker? What the hell difference does that make? It’s a utility trailer, for God’s sake.
