I bought one of these recently, hauled a motorcycle 300 miles, it was shaking so bad I thought a hook would pop loose any moment... Sure enough the last the quarter mile of driving (which is down a pot holed dirt road) I hit a big bump and watched in the rear view mirror as my bike tipped over. Luckily I was going like 2 mph and didn't damage anything (its a dirt bike it falls all the time lol). Definitely adding a deck to the trailer cause that was a terrifying drive home lol. I could see cars staying back from my trailer, probably out of fear lol.

I have a identical trailer and I noticed that on many as well as mine the deck rots on the outer edges due to.the water trapped between the wood and metal so I would either waterproof it as much as possible or use pvc decking on the far left and right sides with regular wood in the middle to save on the cost.
@johnsciarra

Yeah, the wood is an expendable item. I used marine grade plywood, or treated plywood, and it will last a few years outside in the weather.

I've wanted to have a spare tire on the trailer but didn't want to spend the money on one. Your Ubolt idea is genius. I'm going to steal it lol. I just put my 5x8 Carry-on trailer into my workshop so I can remove the 2x lumber I used for the floor (as you know the mesh sucks) and I'll replace with enameled plywood (lighter). I'll fab up some removable sides with 2x or plywood. I'll also weld on tongue supports since its not rigid enough.

Few trolls found their way to this video, with anger in hearts all because they still can't put together a 2 piece lego set. Great video and helpful. I noted the items needed and that you mentioned about bolting tie-downs, you should do follow up video for that (or other mods). I'd like to get trailer (likely 5x9 but 8 should work) so I can load up two motorcycles, which weigh roughly 850-900 combined.

@vivimu
@vivimu 6 жыл бұрын
it's a misconception that those bearing buddy caps are packing the bearings, which they are not. they're just squirting grease into the cap. I would still take the hubs off and grease and pack the bearings at least once a year
@johnsciarra
@johnsciarra 6 жыл бұрын
Brendan, this is true, but it uses a spring pressure mechanism to force grease in and keep water out. The grease should go farther than the cap-- And if you hit it with the grease gun once in a while you may be able to keep the thing lubed for the duration. If the axle ever needs work, I would just replace it with proper grease-zerk fitted bearings.

The plywood is one soild board or two? is it bolted to the underneath metal?
@johnsciarra
@johnsciarra 6 жыл бұрын
Shane Audet , the plywood is one piece, the side pieces are boards, I bolted The plywood down through the tie down rings to the frame. At first I just used self tapping screws to hold it down. But putting a bolt and nut through the tiedown rings and then the frame was much more secure for the rings and it also held the plywood down as an added benefit. You don’t really need the self tapping screws if you do it this way.

The self-tapping screws that are shown, will easily rust in treated wood. Carriage bolts in wood is an exercise in frustration later.....they’ll just spin when you try to remove them one day, and you have no way to hold the head. Just use tiedown fittings or regular hex bolts to hold the wood down.

mark zimmerman , www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072ZZZCQG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1, (link) these are about 1 1/2 inch self tapping metal screws. The link above is to Amazon. The 4 x 8 sheet of plywood did not cover the whole thing, width-wise, so I just added an approximately 6 inch dimensionally wide board on either side. I believe that 8 inch boards are generally not actually 8 inches- they’re nominally less. I think they do sell 5 x 8 sheets of plywood, that would be best. When I bought it at the home Center they let me throw the wood on top to see what fit, this made it easy.

Can anyone HELP please? What is the meaning of *size 4-80-8* written on a small, one axis tire? And can it be safely replace by a 4-8-12? Considering physical fit is right?
@johnsciarra
@johnsciarra 5 жыл бұрын
....Usually the first number is the width/aspect ration (4 inches) and the second number is the wheel diameter (8.0 inches). It is hard to say what you have, it could be 4.8 inches wide/aspect ratio for a 8 inch wheel, most likely. That is a pretty common trailer tire. Most important is to determine the wheel or rim diameter-- so get a ruler and measure that. From that point, you can compare apples to apples. Most 8 inch tires will fit on most 8 inch rims. The tire in this video is a 12 inch rim, so any 12 inch trailer tire will be close. Again this trailer takes very common tires: 480-12 (480 aspect ratio, 12 inch wheel). Hope this helps.

... it is a 5x8 foot deck. the sheet of plywood is only 4x8 foot....So, I had to add the boards on the sides of the plywood to make up the difference.

Your gonna regret the plywood flooring. I used decking Lumber. Its virtually made for being outdoors and with a good stain job every 5 years its now been on my trailer for 22 years. Bolt it down with carriage bolts at both ends and every cross member. The eye hooks are useful but again your gonna regret mounting them where you did. You'll realize this when your wanting to slide a piece of plywood over the rails or something heavy and bulky. Not to mention my little trailer also doubles as an outside work bench just by angling a piece of plywood over the rails. If your lucky maybe you can use the holes you drilled in your rails as your tie down points but im really against drilling holes in the rails. ( just looks weird to me). Your box is ok, I just hope you didn't drill holes through the trailer tounge to mount it. (Holes invite rust ) and if you drilled all the way through the tounge, well you weakened the integrity of tounge strength. So for all you young men out there reading this I hope I've given you a different perspective on how some of these things are really not as good as they seem to be. Porch decking, no holes drilled in the tounge, nothing protruding up from the rails. Plywood is a waste of time and money. Don't drill holes in the tounge ( not sure he did but just saying) .

Thanks for the comments, I agree with everything you say. I did the plywood as a example of a low budget/ light weight solution. For the equipment box I did not drill through the tongue, but used a U-bolt to secure it. The same kind I used to secure the spare tire. As for the ring bolts/eyelet bolts that I attached to the rails, I have found these very handy when securing loads with ratchet straps or bungee cords. They are an easy place to hook onto and they don’t allow the ratchet strap to slide around. If you have to secure a load with five or six ratchet straps/bungees, the eyelets become very handy. Ratchet straps should not be secured around angle iron unto itself as it will abraid the strap, and ruin it.🙂

@@johnsciarra you can buy some D hooks at Harbor freight and bolt them through your floor. Very inexpensive, quite small and out of the way . Just mount them around the edges of the trailer . You'll find it a lot more handy

I used thinner plywood, but stiff. Used u bolts to secure to under rails. Left sides open and used exterior house paint on wood. 11 years old, it needs repainted, but has hauled alot including a hot tub that rode on the side rails.

@davidstill754 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnt5222 you can stain plywood or use outdoor paint on it but if you lay it down flat, like on a trailer and poke holes in it to use U Bolts to hold it in place (which would start rotting out in 2 years if not sooner) and the sun beating down on it for 11 years you better call the Guinness book of world records unless you kept it in a garage and didn't use it. Thin plywood ? smh Maybe you mean 1/4 inch

Five or six years and then dispose? Don't sell it short! I had one of those trailers for 20 years. I'd rust-treat and repaint each spring, maybe every other year. I sold it because I wanted something different. I painted my current Carry-On trailer with Herculiner. Herculiner lasts MUCH longer than spray paint. It's five years old now and cannot see why it won't last 20 years, like the previous model. I'm on the Virginia coast; so, I'm familiar with battling rust. Nice job with the mods! I especially like your tongue box. I may do something similar. I've kept my "strap box" in my car for years. Have a look at my trailer mods at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXXZoGagrNeNpNE, if you're interested. Take Care!

Yes, I think if you keep up on the paint/rust conversion/herculiner it will last. I was just saying if you leave it alone outside, it will turn to rust in a few years- and structurally this thing is not over built.

Thanks man. My old trailer had 4 lug wheels, so I can't use the spare from there. Haven't been able to find any 12 x 4.80 rim/wheel below $40 so far, but I'll have a look in Walmart next time I'm in one that sells tires.

Do I need to register and license plate this trailer
@johnsciarra
@johnsciarra 7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Christensen , in Florida all the trailers have to have a license plate. It’s very easy just take the title to the tag agency pay some money, and you get the license plate. I know in some other states trailers don’t require tags. I guess you just have to check on the Internet what’s specific to your location.
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 7 жыл бұрын
Example: In TN, if the trailer is being towed within the state by a TN tagged vehicle, it doesn't need tags. Applies to utility trailers used for non-commercial enterprise. If towed out of state, tags are required. AZ requires tags but they are for the lifetime of the utility trailer. Other states want registration every year - money to be made.

Mr. About horses, I am just showing you what fit on this trailer, and what was easiest. The side planks were 8 footers, but I think they were 6 inches wide, not one foot. I used what was available at the home center on that day, and tried boards until I found ones that fit. A single sheet of plywood would be best if you could find it in that size.
