Homemade Beach Cart Kayak Cart Wheels, Wheeleez, Beach Wheels, 10 inch diameter hub, 8 Inch self sealing/puncture resistant inner tube, which inflates up to 20 inches in diameter, and the width of the hub is 4 inches. I used foam insulation sheeting from Home Depot and sandwiched it to form the inner part of the hub. Any kind of Styrofoam will work. -- Make your own Fishing cart or Kayak cart Beach balloon wheels...These inner tube wheels are equipped with a self sealing puncture substance for tires that will roll, even glide, over soft sand, turf and other challenging terrain. The tire's low pressure permits rolling heavy loads over unstable/uneven ground with ease. These balloon wheels will not sink or plow into soft ground. They are great for use on delicate surfaces preventing indentations, as well as providing shock-absorbing qualities. I am thinking about re-making the hubs from Aluminum Diamond Plate...
Here is a short video of them on the beach. • Home Made Wheeleeze be...

I used them for the first time last weekend and with a fully loaded yak, they didn't sink one bit in the sand! There was a slight depression in the soft beach sand and that was it! I was able to pull my fully loaded Yak all the way from the parking area to the water without stopping and I was not out of breath. Usually where I park, I have to stop and rest 3 or 4 times and I am virtually worn out with small regular cart wheels. These tires work like a charm!

I know this an old video, but still awesome idea. I took it a little different direction but would not have thought of without your idea. I bought 2 13" tire-wheel-tubes at Harbor Freight for $12.99 each less 20% coupons. I removed the tires and reinflated the tubes on the rims. They aren't flat proof, but at 2 PSI I think it would take a pretty sharp object to puncture them; if needed I'll upgrade the tubes. Haven't tried them in the sand yet, but they roll around my yard great, lol. One last thing, the hubs were a little too wide to fit on my axle so I disassemble the rims (these are split bolt together rims), knocked the outside bearing out, cut about 3/4" off the tube and put the bearing back in.

I wonder if a quicker way to make the central foam section might be to sandwich the partly inflated tyre between the wooden/aluminium rings and bolt them together. Then fully inflate the tryre (to provide resistance) and squirt some polyurethane expanding foam in the gap between the rings using the the central hub hole. Let it expand until it dries and cut off any excess poking through the hub. Drill through your hub pipe and let some air out of the tyre to spread the load on the sand. Another improvement might be to add some 25mm bore stainless steel pillow block bearings which you can find on eBay.

Great use for an inner tube. No one in the UK seems to stock proper sand tyres and the US based retailers won't export without some complex freight forward set up. Did find a Spanish based retailer but all their tyres/wheels were out of stock. Us Brits have been slow to catch on to the benefits of using a beach cart to carry all the usual equipment for a day at the beach. I did look at using off-the-shelf fishing carts tend to still have narrow mud tyres which are useless in soft sand. Definitely going to try this method but maybe add some rubber matting to outside to reinforce the tyre.

I haven't made these yet but I have a couple of recommendations. Instead of using foam for the inner tube to rest on, I'm going to use 1-1/4" PVC to go around the carriage bolts. I plan on using a hole saw to create slots for the PVC to fit into. That will keep them from shifting around. In addition to that I'm going to pre drill the carriage bolt holes and coat the plywood discs with several coats of FlexSeal. Not only will that make them waterproof, it'll also ensure that no splinters, should any pop up, will puncture the inner tube. I'll post a video when construction is complete. Thanks for the video!

Hi Jim, Thanks for sharing this idea. I intend to make four wheels in total for a fishing kayak that has gained a lot of weight due to added equipment. I have made two wheels thus far and would like your thoughts about modifications. 1. I used four 6" hex-head bolts to join the two wooden discs, intending to use the foam filler as hub material. This step now seems unnecessary. Any reason I should not skip filling the void? 2. Adding two or three layers of duct tape to the tubes would help protect the rubber from any damage. Any reason I should not do that? I appreciate any help. Peace, Fred

Sweet! Might want to put some rubber hose or around the wood edge so the wood will not cut into the tire/rub a hole in the side wall. A couple very short SSteel wood screws to hole the rubber bead will work w/some Gorilla glue. Just a thought. Great Job.

@JohnSims3
@JohnSims3 9 жыл бұрын
@Fred Mueller If you use thicker wood for the wheels, maybe you won't have to fill the void. My plywood was thin, so I used the foam board inside to strengthen the hubs. I have not seen a need for the tape. The edges are not sharp and won't puncture the tubes if sanded down real well. Good luck and post your completed project!

I really enjoy diy and like your build. Since I live on the coast these type tires/wheels come in handy. I'm curious though, I didn't see a way to fill the tube once it's together, did I miss something in your video? As well, repurposing goes hand in hand with diy. May I ask, have you given thought to just using golf cart tires? You can pick up used balding tires with the rim for around 5 bucks. Here you can at any rate. just build a center out of plywood like you have done only smaller and your axle will fit. they even make similar tires for around $35 with the rim new. Just a thought mind you... yours I'm sure are much lighter.

Great video, and thanks for sharing! I built a surf fishing cart a few years back for toting all my surf fishing gear, cooler, chairs, etc. I love the thing, but I wasn't going to fork out $200 for some wheeleez so I put some wheelbarrow tires on there--terrible idea!! Did you ever install a valve extender, and if so how'd you make it work? I started building these yesterday, and bought a valve extender from Orielly's; however, once installed the air leaks out of the tire. Just curious if you had any advice or encountered this issue? I'm wondering if it's worth it, or if I should just take the wheel apart if I need to let air out or put more in. Also, I didn't fill the void/gap so I wonder if I just cut a hole on the outside big enough to access the valve--maybe that would work! Thoughts? Thanks again!

Way to go! btw you can cut a perfect circle with a router and a simple jig, put a pin and arm or wood fastened to the router base to cut a circle, and I have done a lot with cutting pvc sheet, the 1/4 pvc is not very structurally strong when flat but vertically very good might work for wheels instead of plywood.

@@JohnSims3 That's really great that they are holding up. I am thinking about building a beach cart for my beach sherpa business, it should hold everything needed for a dozen people, including a large floaty and batteries, water, and laptop (Its going to have a beach computer work station so I can run my other business from the beach.). So it may end up being pretty heavy. Ive done the business three times, 2 years ago. Thinking the large cart would be towed in a trailer parked at a boat ramp and then pushed or maybe even be dc powered to beaches in Pinellas County Florida. It will need to go over road, sidewalk and beach. I might build a cheap test version first though. What do you think the total weight capacity of four of those tubes is?

John Sims Thanks, I read all the entries below. I'm a wee bit concerned about rust on the all-thread. I understand the zinc coating won't stand up well to ocean water. However, this is not meant to be "live forever" tank. I'll probably try the wheelbarrow tube first for "proof of principle" and am looking at 7-9 inch, heavy duty ATV inner tubes as larger wheels if needed. I make my own leak sealant so I'm not tied to the store bought and certainly not Slime. It only lasts 2 years. I'm also mind surfing about the possibility of casting wheel rims in foam and then covering in fiberglass. I wonder if there are any existing plastic rims available. And another possibility is to 3D print the rims. Don't think I have access to a printer that large...yet. Everything is out there in dreamland right now.

i know this is a money saving project, but why not put it on a wheel barrow rim?

Great idea, but I didn't have any at the time. I had fun making them anyways...Even some of the lawn tractor rims might even work...

John Sims i have some old hand dolly rims and bought matching innertubes, but the tube is too big for the rim. im guessing the tire keeps the tube contained, so no need the tube to actually fit snugly on the rim. i have an 8inch wheelbarrow rim, im going to try to put a 6inch inner tube on. i will let ya know how that works.
