Thanks John for a good review. I am seriously considering buying this camera, however I am being held back due to a number of negative comments regarding the lack of a built in viewfinder and it being difficult to see the screen in bright conditions ... did you find this an issue?

I didn't find it a huge issue. It does better than most in sunny conditions but you can always turn up the brightness of the LCD in the settings. There aren't that many point and shoot cameras within this price range that includes a viewfinder but at least with this camera you have the option of using an external viewfinder. Its just very expensive.

I've been asking the same question lately. Apparently the HX300 is for people who need an enormous amount of zoom, like a sport photographer for example. But the HX50V is for normal people who don't need that much zoom, and 30X zoom is a sweet spot because it would be really handy when needed and the camera is still compact and pocket-friendly, unlike the HX200V which has the same zoom range (30X) but has a large body like the HX300. And BTW 50X zoom is not a big difference from 30X. Image quality is about the same on both, the same can be said for video shooting. The big difference is in features. The HX300 has 50X zoom, Electronic ViewFinder, tiltable screen, and a focus/zoom ring on the lens barrel (which I really, really love to have). The HX50V has a Multi-Interface Hotshoe, an EV Compensation dial, Wifi (really good for adjusting group shots or making KZbin videos), GPS, better battery performance, and a SMALLER, LIGHTER BODY! I travel a lot and I can't imaging fitting the HX300 in an bag because it is wide and thick and long. So it's HX50V for me. Hope this helps :)

TheRedTech98 I just picked up the HX50 for the exact same reason. As I was searching I kept going back to lower level DSLRs and larger mirrorless cameras. However, as I pieced these together I basically ended up building a $1000 range price tag and a camera that would offer me more features I want in a camera, except two: portability and GPS tagging. The whole reason I was looking for a camera was for travel and backpacking trips, so imagine little carrying space and need for zoom (hiking, camping, canyoneering, etc). Simply, I found this HX50 to be the best compromise to a loss of features and manual control from a DSLR/higher end mirrorless/HX300 but a big increase in portability and capability for shooting in those places/times when a DSLR simply isn't practical. I shot with the HX200V for a while and enjoyed it for what it was, I am hoping this will be a smaller, lighter, improved version of that camera.

Just to clear things up, the HX300 is a SuperZoom camera, not a mirrorless camera. Mirrorless cameras basically have the same sensor size as DSLRs but without the mirror that flips up and down, thus named "Mirrorless". The sensor in DSLRs or Mirrorless cameras is four times the size of the sensor in the HX300 or the HX50. Hope this helps :)

John Sison Wow hold on I'm assuming uke5417 meant if you take two pics that are equally zoomed up to 30X, well then with the RX100 you would have to use the digital zoom to get that close because it has a 3.6X one, and still the image would be better than using an HX50V?

Hi Kalyan. Apologies for the late reply. I would suggest going with the HX50V rather than the HX300 for image quality. There are a variety of picture effects such as selective color, miniature and sweep panorama. So those features you were looking for are featured in this camera.

You can control the shutter speed and aperture but it has limitations. For example you can only control the aperture from f3.5 to f8 and shutter speed can go as fast as 1/1600sec.

hyukminxing kmblry To be honest, a lot of cameras will struggle if you're going to be far away, especially if it will be far away. Possibly the Panasonic FZ200 would be a good choice but it is big. Otherwise, this camera will do a decent job but don't expect it to give you the best quality. I hope that helps.

If you just need it as a point and shoot camera, you honestly can't go wrong with this. There is a newer model called the HX60 which adds a few more features but other than that it still retains the same optical zoom.

The focus is pretty quick. As for macro shooting, it can go up to 5cm close to the subject and you can still have the blurry background if you wish with background defocus.

I'm looking for a compact camera and wondering if this take great pic at night. I've tried a lot of cameras, and also a system camera (I've tried a lot of settings but i don't get the right settings for night mode, so i'm looking for a easier one). I like sequence shooting, so even if a leave my Nikon D60 and go for a compact camera I want that. Do you still recommend this one? For 2 years ago I bought a compact camera, which was really bad crap. It record videos better than took photos. So now, I don't want to do the same mistake ^^

It is a bit difficult but any LCD screen is difficult to see through in bright daylight. You can increase the brightness on the camera and you should be fine. Its not that bad.

GrammaGribble The largest it could take is a 128gb SD card although, I wouldn't really recommend it. I'd definitely recommend a class 10 or higher card.

If you put it in intelligent auto the camera can do all the thinking for you but if you want to play around with the settings, you can change your ISO to a higher level for indoor settings as well as shutter speed and aperture. For outdoor shots, you can use the lowest ISO.

Are you shooting in intelligent auto? It also depends if you have zoomed in on the subject or not. If its not zoomed in at all the minimum focusing distance will be a lot closer than if it were zoomed in.

Hi John, I'm in doubt whether to buy the Nikon S7000 or the older sony HX50 in the same price range now. I like that the S7000 is a lot smaller and lighter and care less for the increase in zoom of the HX50. However I was told in the store that the image quality of the HX50 is a lot better, does anybody have experience with that? You will lose a bit of detail and you will get some grain at those settings but for a compact camera, its not too bad.

Nice I would like to get a Sony dsc hx60v which is an small upgrade to Sony dsc hx50v. Please give a good review of the Sony hx60v also. Does it have the manual focus ring or so to zoom in and out manually. What about the Lcd screen on both of them when outdoors in bright Sunlight ? Is it fine to notice the view in the LCD screen in such bright conditions ? Or it will be better to get a Sony EVF mountable on the hot shoe provided which is expensive. Is there any cheap or other affordable EVF that would fit in the hot shoe of the hx50v/ hx60v ?

If you don't mind missing out on that extra zoom the WX300 would be more than capable. Has plenty of the features seen in the HX50 but missing a few standout features like GPS and a hotshoe.

A. Bhartia Yeah I would probably go with the a5000 if you were willing to give up the zoom that you get on the HX50. Its very light and easy to carry around. I just had the shoulder strap on the camera and it wasn't a burden at all.

I would set the aperture to F8 since that's the minimum, set ISO to 100 and the aperture to possibly 1/125sec or faster.

My Sony Cyber Shot DSC- HX50 has been acting strangely for a while, when I go to choose to delete something, for example, it flicks through the options as if it has a mind on it's own. I have just been putting up with it, but now it's telling me to re-insert the memory card C13.01. The card works in other cameras though. Any ideas what is the problem?

It could be an issue with the camera now. I would try to initialize the camera without the card inside to see if that works and also format the card but do it only after you take out all your photos and videos off of it.

Definitely, although the HX60 does improve on it a bit in regards to low light performance. Either way, they both the same amount of optical zoom which will be great if you want to get in real close.

Hi John. I just purchased the Sony RX100 III as my "little camera" to go with me (and my Canon 5DMIII) on a 1-year RTW photographic journey. BUT....I am hesitant to commit to the Sony, as I just don't think that this is the right camera to complete my travel "kit"... while it has RAVING reviews, the zoom is just not there, so before my 30 day return period runs out, I am now second guessing my choice.... and just today, I am beginning to look at the DSC-HX50V (my current "little camera" is the DSC-HX9V). As a travel photographer, I also like the geo-tagging function and the RX100 doesn't have this (but the HX50V does, right)? Do you think that the HX50V would be a good "little camera" to go along with my 5DMk3? I realize I can't get everything I want in a small camera, but I want to have a decent zoom, and theRX100III only goes to 70mm!! Thanks for your reviews. Tawna Brown Hehe looks like you've already linked your accounts. Regarding your question the HX50 is a good option to go with. You won't get the same quality as the RX100M3 but like you said the zoom isn't enough so the HX50/HX60 would be a good choice. Main differences between those two HX cameras is that the HX60 has better WiFi control and Sony's playmemories camera apps, a better processor so slightly better low light photos and that's about it so if you don't need those, you're best to save some money and grab the HX50.

If you press the menu button it'll bring up a bunch of settings which you can scroll through. Navigate to a setting thats called image setting size and you would be able to change it from there.

John Sison Hi John, I love my camera, shot several hundred pics, one problem, You were nice enough to help me get started. :-) Ok, here is the issue, when the sun is bright the 3" view looks like a mirror. Tony Kaye Yep, its just the nature of any camera at the moment. It can't go longer than 29mins because it would be classified as a video camera and it would usually mean it would be more expensive.

Those two cameras are very different. The one that would be comparable to the HX50 is the SX280 but if you're comparing it to the 1100d the Canon would be better in terms of image quality. You won't be able to get the same amount of zoom though that is on the HX50.

k john. but is it possible to take pics and videos with background blur, in these two cameras hx50v and 1100d i dono what it calls,, focus or defocus i thought. all my need is blur for selected subjects in pics and videos. kindly suggest me....

Ganesh KUMAR The 1100d can do it because it has a larger sensor. The HX50 can do it too but it would be done digitally in camera.

This is the best travel zoom camera on the market. I did a lot of traveling with my HX9V. It is awesome for that purpose and the 1080 50p video is amazing for this small body. This line has the best stabilizers in this category! It is almost glidecam-like. I am going to exchange it for the RX100 though, cause high ISO is really bad on the HX-models, cause of the small sensor.

The only bad thing about this camera is the absence of the battery indicator. It is insane.
