This is my 1998 johnson 15hp. It is a great original motor. It is pushing my 16-foot deep v Crestliner X-160 at about 22 MPH.

Just purchased a 1998 15 hp johnson on a 14 foot lund with a trailer from a family member. He bought it new in 1998. I paid 1500 dollars. Is this a good set up. Was it a good price. Is it a good motor?

That’s a good deal for a boat and trailer. Hard to say a price without seeing the condition. But they typically go between $700-1200 depending on condition for just the motor. Sounds like you got a good buy

It's pretty hard to beat the power to weight to ratio of these outboards.

I have several 15 hp outboards and just picked up a 94 Evinrude today , my others are from 74 to 82 , sure do like the shift handle in front instead of on the side . I’m going to go completely through it and I know it will run as good as yours ! I’m also from Minnesota and when the fish are biting that’s a blast but when there not , you know it sucks ! Lol. I’m putting on one of my 14 ft’ers , would be nice to have a 16 deep like yours but nobody sells them , they keep them forever! Lol. Nice video !

great motor. use good quality oil, winterize and store it properly, change the lower end fluid annually and will last until you're a old man!!

Took it up to college and serviced everything on it. New water pump impeller, plugs, lower unit grease, seals, even rebuilt the recoil for the hell of it. They are fun to drive and extremely easy to work on.

Doug McLean the shop models were the same motor and I tore it down to nothing. Then rebuilt the entire thing. And there wasn’t a blot in it after I took it apart. Took the needle bearings out of it holding the connecting rod to the piston. Slapped it back together with new gaskets and runs like a top. Then tore the lower unit apart and threw that back together. They are bullet proof

@@MattMohsOutdoors man you are lucky you don't have to deal with salt water like we do in RI! I have over 20 motors and each one has a bolt or nut that needs soaking when something needs replacing. why did you tear your motor down? was it knocking or overheated? runs perfect!

I should add that I have not replaced the lower unit oil since I ran her last (which was close to 2 years ago now).. I know I should do it yearly but I haven't done so, since I dont plan on taking her out anytime soon (even thou I'm itching to since its been so long since I've had her out).. Should I go ahead and drain her and attempt the seal replacements.. any advice/tips..? I would like to try and do all of the maintenance myself (as there is no better feeling than to know you did everything correctly and up to spec). So far I've done the impeller, spark plugs, and lower unit drain and fill. I always run the carb dry after use and keep the cylinders fogged with a bit of oil. I guess I dropped the ball for not draining and filling lower unit after the last time, but I certainly DID NOT anticipate letting her sit out for this long. Sorry for rambling so much.. I guess I'm just excited to have read that you took yours apart completely and put her back together with no issues. I'd like to attempt that someday.. make sure I keep her in pristine running condition. This is my baby.. I LOVE this little motor!!

Da_Q-ban_One prop shaft seals go out from old age and fishing line. It is good to take the prop off annually and check for line behind it and to grease the shaft. They aren’t that hard to do just don’t scratch the shaft seal surface or you’ll be eating through seals like crazy.

@@MattMohsOutdoors sorry for the long silence.. I couldn't find this thread.. I'll sub, so i dont have to anymore. Thanks for the advice man! I've watched a few more videos and the more I think about it.. the more I think I will hold off on doing the seals myself. It takes some serious skill (not to mention the right tools) to pull off that job. I don't think I have any actual seal leaks, as the stuff is certainly not milky nor runny.. it's just black and it's so minimal that I think I may just have old burned up oil coming from the exhaust. I think I will first attempt a pressure test. Is that something I can do myself, or do I have to take it to a shop? Thanks again for your responses man, cheers!!

Hey Matt... sweet motor. I have the same one a year older and it too has everything original on it. I have purchased a repair manual for it and the seals.. I think my lower unit seals need replacing, as I find a few drops of black lower unit oil on the ground from time to time, (after months to a year since its last use) and it seems to come from the prop area.. how hard is it to replace the seals myself...? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Da_Q-ban_One The bearing carrier is held on by two bolts behind the prop. You will need a slide hammer puller to remove that. The whole prop shaft will come out as well. If you don’t have experience I would not recommend doing it. You can do a pressure test on the lower unit and spray both the drive shaft and the prop shaft with mean green and see where the leak is.

@@MattMohsOutdoors Hey Matt, I think I'm gonna attempt it next week. She has sat for close to 4years now and I'm sure the carb will need some lovin lol.. as well as the linkages (which have likely never been adjusted back to spec). I might be bugging you if I run into any issues or hit any snags. Do you an email I can contact you on perhaps, should I run into any issues?

Da_Q-ban_One sounds good. I can measure mine. You will need a dial caliper. They are pretty easy to do. Just pop the rod off the ball joint. I tore this same model motor completely apart don’t to the needle bearings on the connecting rod and put it back together. If you need help just let me know

Is your motor 2 stroke and do you have to mix the fuel or is it oil injected?
