Love those old outboard repair videos! You have helped me immensely. I even help friends fix their outboards now. Thanks for making me look somewhat smart.

Love the videos! You do a great job explaining and teaching. I would like to offer an idea video for you to consider. Would you do a full video of a complete rebuild of an Evinrude/Johnson that has a catastrophic failure of some sort (broken rings, valve issues etc.). Diagnosis, machining, parts sourcing and rebuild details would be neat to see from beginning to end. I know that is a big project and would likely not be economical in many cases, but ROI doesn’t get in the way of many do-it-yourselfers. Anyway, thanks again for all you do and I will keep watching!

At 12:48 you can see that the part that covers the pivot area isn't opening and closing as it should when the tiller handle is raised and lowered.

I’ve got an 1978 Johnson 25 Tiller and a 1977 Johnson 35 Remote Steering. Are the steering bracket/ tiller handle compatible on the 35? If so, do I need to remove the entire powerhead to change these out?

See that metal rod with the hole. The one the screw threads into to hold the plastic handle. That piece broke on mine. Any videos on fixing this?

My 79 6hp Johnson has a tendency to not hold speed it wants to rurn to an idle. Also raising the tiller while going slow will increase the speed a little. I cleaned and greased everything. Do you think it may be that friction ring? Should it be dry like that or lubed? I hate taking the handles apart, I broke one years ago doing so.

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a 82 Johnson with the same handle control, I cleaned it but it can't spring back to idle. Can you tell me which component is supposed to do so? Thanks!

awesome video!! very helpful... thank you!! quick question does the 6hp tiller handle fit on a 30hp? I have a 1985 30hp Evinrude (E30ECOA) and they look identical except it looks like the handle on the 6hp is shorter. My outboard came with broken parts, gear screw missing and stripped, half of assembly was broken where the gear goes through , spring is missing, friction block is missing and all bushings are gone. So I was thinking of just getting a used tiller handle, however I can't find a 20-30hp replacement.

For anyone wondering, the handle from a 6hp fits the 30hp. It will be about 2” shorter

I have a 1993 Yamaha 30ELRR tiller. I want to convert to remote steering. Do I have to connect eveything comming out of the box to the outboard. I just want to shift and throttle from the front of the boat. I have no problem starting up from the outboard.

I have a 1970 8 25 horsepower short shaft and it's tiller steering but it's got pull start and electric start but the chiller handle I was waiting for parts for the handle and I was trying to make it work without it is my job pretty much done can you run it without the tiller handles just for repair work or does it have to be in sequence with the shift stator plate underneath the flywheel. I'm saying this because every time I go to pull start it the linkage wants to rotate no matter what I can't get it sit still or stay in the timing bracket
@BrandonsGarage
@BrandonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, the magnets in the flywheel are moving the timing plate. Tiller might help with it, as it add some friction via the friction. The the throttle gear have a stop screw on it?

Hey! Quick question, what is the point of the spring/friction block? I have a ‘65 johnson 9.5hp that I’m designing a removable tiller extension for, and I’d like to swap it back and forth in place of the original handle rather than the age old “slide a pvc pipe over the handle and clamp it down with zip ties” method. Therefore I’m trying to make it as easy as possible to unscrew one handle in place of the other, and I’ve found that it’s a lot less time consuming to simply skip assembling the spring/friction block. Will this damage or cause excessive wear on my motor somehow? Thanks!

Great video Brandon. One question I have is, would it not make sense to add some lubricant to the handle and the shaft? I realize that grease would attract dirt but perhaps a dry lubricant like spray moly or spray graphite would reduce friction a bit.

30 seconds after I finished this handle I took it back apart and put some triple guard grease on the bushing. Ill remember first next time.

Where did you get that grip from ? I know a few guys that would love it for duck hunting ! Are you formal trained or self trained ? I’ve had a few customers that buy a motor and 1 - 2 weeks later bring it back claiming a problem and want there money back after they used it on vacation !

Oh I've got a few of them, they are decently hard to come by when you want one, but when you don't they are everywhere; and nobody really wants them so I swap them out. Problem with them is usually the detent ball/spring is stuck, rendering it useless. Yeah, returns are a problem if you're trying to run a business fixing and selling outboards. However that is when having two of each model is handy... oh there is a problem, here take this one.... then you get the real story of why they want to return it. I would say the bigger problem is people not really knowing how to operate them correctly. I know they are simple enough, but how often do you forget to lock the motor before using reverse. I do it more often than I would like to admit, and I know what I'm doing. To answer your question, I am self trained, mostly. I do have all of the OMC & BRP training materials though, but that is just because I like to collect Evinrude stuff.

I've got one of these metal grip handles which came new in the box with an accompanying telescoping handle. It is called a "Gil-Bracket", an aftermarket kit, probably no longer made. They work great. (They are anodized bronze colored aluminum.) However, keep the detent ball lubed with a little light oil every now and then, so that it won't get stuck. If it does get stuck, it will usually come free with a gentle rap right on the detent ball with a small hammer. Then, hold the ball in and oil. Other than that, they are a lifetime deal. Oh, one other thing........... if you have a bare wire somewhere under your flywheel on the mag plate, when you twist the throttle that bare wire can shoot an arc (spark) to some nearby ground. It will shock the doo-doo out of you if you have one of these metal twist-grip handles. The plastic handle, of course, will not do that. I'm am guessing the original plastic handle on this motor got warped and ruined by "Bubba", who crammed a piece of heated PVC on it as a "Bubba-rigged" tiller-arm extension. The poor motor itself looks like a "Mississippi Motor" in all respects. If you want to use PVC on your motor for a tiller-arm extention, split it several inches in about six places first. Do not heat it. Then, gently push it on (room temp) and then hose clamp (two clamps are better than one) it over the splits you made. Works well.
