Good video and thank for not snipping the plunger off the fuel stop solenoid. A lot of repair shops cut it off. That’s not a good thing to do ever and they should close their business. Your a good mechanic brother! Nice work

Brad you are the Man! My mower is a twin on your mower that your working on. Love my Lt2000 with the Kohler 17.5 . The problem that i had was it was sounding like it was running out of fuel. The gas cap seal had deteriorated and fell in the fuel tank. Flushed tank and replaced fuel filter back in businesses , Thank you so much. Your spot on! Terry P.S. Great tip on the solenoid .

Good job. I actually did away with the fuel solenoid and installed a fuel shut off valve on the fuel line. Just got to remember to shut the fuel off when finished

Great installment on the Kohler Command. I have two of them and they continue to run well after 25 years. The carbs are the only issues for me as they do have solenoid and float leakage issues. I installed fuel cut-offs to reduce fuel flow in to the engine through the carb when not running.

One of the best small engine diagnostic and repair videos ever seen! I’ve been working on small engines and cars , trucks etc, just out of enjoyment and necessity for decades and love learning from a true mechanic and especially someone that is meticulous about the job and the little details that make the difference. My friend recently reached out to me about a Kohler 18 hp not starting and after recommending the usual check for fuel and fire, I came across this fuel solenoid issue. Watched a couple videos and they bypassed or cut it off. I don’t work that way, there’s a reason for this component and why not fix it the right way? Thanks and will be following your other videos! You’re a true craftsman in your field!

The solenoid was not seized in the up position, so why is it that it was still preventing fuel flow?

I have the same motor. I had to replace my lifters as the tick was really loud and would take really long for it to go away. When I pulled out the lifters one didn’t have any spring tension downwards. It was completely frozen. I tried the seafoam trick and changing the oil to no avail. Pretty big job as you have to pull the head on that motor. It seems these motors are plagued with this issue. I didn’t want to have any issues with the cam so I fixed it.

Brad, Your videos are really helpful and well done. I wanted to ask you about the coil on a CV14T, do you know what resistance it should measure? I have a Scag that lost spark. I bought the replacement Kohler OEM ignition Coil 12-584-05 and neither worked, I actually returned the first one and the second one still didn't work. My original coil measured about 20k ohms. The OEM replacements measured at around 18.5k ohms. I took a coil off a CV15, it tested at 8.5K ohms and works just fine...the coil off the CV15 was a 12-854-01....
@JohnsonsSmallEngines11 ай бұрын
You would need to get into the manual to find out what all the resistance readings are.
@jamesbubnick11 ай бұрын
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I found them....7,900 to 18,400 ohms. ....I ordered a new coil from a different kohler retailer. hopefully this one works as I'm pretty shocked that 2 OEM Kohler coils both were bad.

Where can my kohler twin be leaking oil if not from the valve covers? Thank you very much. Jim k.

oil pan, oil drain fitting, bottom or top crank seal, crack in block, oil fill tube "O" ring or cracked tube.

Please repeat where you purchased the fuel line crimper and link or part #. I thought you said Harbor Freight but I went there and they couldn't find it...thanks for your youtubes
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 ай бұрын
Yes, I did say HARBOR FREIGHT. If they don’t have them, then you will just have to find something comparable. I purchased mine at HARBOR FREIGHT. You can also use a pair of small vice grips, needle nose type, and put tape around the grooves of the jaws to protect the fuel line from getting imprints.

Awesome video! What if my engine is so tight I can't turn it by hand? It spins when I turn the key over but not by hand
@JohnsonsSmallEngines8 ай бұрын
First check the engine oil level. If your engine is spinning ok when you are using the key start. Most likely you are feeling the normal engine compression and the drag from the transmission drive belt that is running around the engine pulley.
@andrewking14148 ай бұрын
@JohnsonsSmallEngines I got it running! I could hear the click in the fuel shutoff solenoid but I unscrewed it and rescrewed it in and somehow the dang thing started. If you were to go buy a mower for half an acre around the 4k dollar mark what would you buy? I want a standing but they are 6k! Thanks so much! I have a 2008 42" troybilt colt xp! I'd be looking for 30" to 46" I guess

Maybe you can suggest a remedy. I have zero torn w/kohler 7000 pro 24hp kt-735. I've had it going on 3rd.yr. I mow an acre and every other mowing event it starts bogging down then won't start. I've taken it back to the shade tree business and it's had 3 carborator replacements. I don't believe the mechanic may really know whats causing this.

I have a 22hp courage Kohler mower new fuel pump I an not pumping gas I checked compression it checks 70 lb on the right side but only 30 lb on the side that the fuel pump is on. I think it may need a valve gasket or a valve job. any ideas?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
Cannot guess, how many hours are on the engine. You should have a hour meter? Sounds like it is time to pull the head to see if it’s a valve not seating properly or if the valves look ok then you most likely have bad rings.

I just replaced my carb, basically same motor (15.5 hp). I'm having the same problem with not starting. New spark plug, new oil and filter, new fuel lines and filter, and now a new carb. Still won't start. It'll start if I drain the bowl, and then use a little ether to force it to start. It'll run continuously then until I shut it off. Then it won't start again. Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance. 😜

Sounds like the choke needs adjusting?
@MrOioi19894 ай бұрын
so it turns out, it was a bad magneto! It would only"force start" with starting fluid, then it would run fine until I shut it off. So that made me think that it was getting ignition. But, after a couple more times, I couldn't get it to start at all, and it wasn't getting any spark. Bought a new $13 magneto off Amazon and......Viola!! She fires right up again! 😜

At about 7 minutes into the video in the back behind the solenoid and a little to the right it looks like the engine casting is cracked or it's a grease / dirt crooked line. Not that it is the problem but is it cracked or what ? Thanks
