I decided to delete the video, I posted, of Juliana's final days and remove certain scenes. As of today, December 7, 2016, Johns Hopkins Hospital has yet to provide us with a logical reason why Juliana's health declined so rapidly starting on October 20, 2016.
She started a rapid decline the evening of October 20th and EVERYONE told us it was the result of the pain medications. We want the truth. She died on October 24. As of today, Johns Hopkins is refusing to have another meeting with us to address some of our questions regarding her death as they couldn't answer a few of our questions in our first meeting which we initiated. NO ONE, FROM THE HOSPITAL, TOLD US SHE WAS GOING TO DIE SOON. She was scheduled to start new cancer treatment on October 26th.
NO ONE contacted us, from the hospital, after her death (except for a doctor and a nurse coming to the last viewing)...NO ONE. It was like we didn't even exist. Yesterday, the hospital said they will send us a letter in the next thirty days to explain how and why she died. We deserve the truth. We deserve answers. There was something that happened between Thursday (October 20) and Friday (October 21) the day she was discharged from the hospital. We can't be the only family who has had a similar situation happen to their child.
The gaping hole in Tammy's heart and my heart is growing and growing every day. We don't know what happened...for sure. We want the truth.
Love you all!

Totally agree, and I have done hospice cases as well. Very hard for her to suffer, as well the family and to feel helpless. You do all you can, seek all the help you can. Then it comes down to the ( Cancer) illness, prognosis, her body, immune system, treatments available, the effects of those treatments, chemo, radiation, medication and etc. And perhaps some spirituality as well.

I was a cancer nurse for adults, and one thing all family members do is try to “feed” their loved ones as they think it will give them strength! We used to take the water etc away once the patient was loosing consciousness as families would still try to give it to them causing them to aspirate. I don’t understand why this family were not given mouth swabs to moisten her lips. They are flavoured and can be used safely to moisten the mouth, or If you want to moisten the lips and mouth please do it using a sponge in tiny amounts to avoid aspirated pneumonia. Unfortunately no one can tell you how long someone will last & this is common during cancer treatment that patients will take a sudden turn for the worse but the family should have been told that she would be going home to pass away not to recover & if they were not told that the signs were obviously there l, then the hospital is negligent. It is the morphine that aids a painful death and when given in the hospital it’s the build up that slows the breathing down with added sedative that gives a peaceful passing. This family should have been given mouth swabs and a machine to administer morphine & sedative so she wasn’t waking and was peaceful. I’ve given many patients a very peaceful passing from cancer and it can be a very pain free peaceful passing if done properly & can be done in the home with family around them. If this family were not told that the signs, when she left the hospital were that she would be going home to pass, then this hospital was very negligent and should have to give answers why she was not discharged with the meds etc to have a peaceful passing with her family and her little dog Maddy. I struggled to watch this video as a nurse & a mother, as it could have been far more peaceful for Juliana and her family, and with the right advice & equipment to give her a far more peaceful passing. Passing does not have to be painful, it can be done peacefully but it must be planned and it must be with medication which unfortunately means your loved one will be unconscious and will not regain consciousness but it will be peaceful. it also can only happen if the family are ready for that and understand that to pass peacefully they will be unconscious which is the hardest part for families to except. The hardest part is accepting the signs and knowing it’s time to give up the fight & now time to say goodbye and give them the best passing we possibly can, free of pain surrounded by their loved ones surrounded by love. My heart goes out to this family and what they had to go through watching her pass this way 😢💔 RIP Juliana 💔xx

It Seems these parents weren’t properly prepared and it makes my heart hurt. They really thought they would be able to get her more treatment. I do agree there could have been a lot more better communication between the parents and the hospital. The doctors didn't properly explain to them that she was nearing the end and the parents didn't properly handle it as a result. I'm not blaming them and ultimately, cancer is the real evil here. I'm sure everyone involved has some regrets and wish they would have done things differently.💔

This was the hardest thing I've ever watched. Juliana's parents and her extended family seem like a very loving family but I'll have to say very ignorant. My husband died 6 months ago from interstitial lung disease and his transition was so opposite of this. It was very peaceful, and he never gasped or moaned as this poor child did. He was in hospice and we were instructed to give him morphine with a sedative mixed in it every 2 hours. He wasn't awake and didn't respond to us when we the hospice nurse said he was transitioning and we begin the 2 hour medication but he was peaceful. I would have been out of my mind if he had struggled like this poor child. What were they thinking to keep her awake like that and pushing tea and suggesting pizza. Even in the hospital prior to going home, they wouldn't let her rest or sleep. Mercy! Possibly they were in denial, but this poor child suffered as a result of their ignorance. It was just hard to watch. I'm glad she isn't suffering any longer. I can imagine her in heaven, healed and feeling her best and living her life with so much joy. Juliana, you were a brave girl.

First of all, I want to thank you for sharing this video. However, I can’t understand why doctors or anyone from the medical facility didn’t tell you that your daughter is terminal and all she needs is hospice care at home, not another treatment in the hospital. For anyone with hospice experience, it’s obvious, she was actively dying, struggling to keep herself awake for days. And I felt she didn’t want to disappoint expectations and hope put in her. That’s why it's SO important to educate ourselves not only about how to live, but how to recognize a dying process and comfort our loved ones as best we can, according to their needs, will, and body condition. Your daughter made a heroic, but exhausting battle that no one who dies should ever be going through. Nevertheless, someone fu..ked up her right to let go.

I've watched several of these videos, and it's obvious how much these parents loved that little girl. But what is missing is conversations about what she was feeling, what she wanted. I don't hear questions of, are you in pain? Do you want to let go? Is this too much? Do you want to rest right now, instead of making a friggin' halloween pumpkin -- days before her death. An adult can assert these needs and take charge of their passing, but a kid who's battled this vile disease for nine years cannot. The medical staff should have counselled the parents about dealing with end of life issues.

No everyone copes with this level of illness. Men mostly don’t because they think they can fix things and some things they can’t. It makes them feel powerless. You have to forgive them, they don’t mean to offend the parents. In the old days dying was public and people feared it less. Now people are terrified to die because most of You never see it. Think instead the family was sharing their last precious moments with their daughter. Maybe it will remind people to hug their kids and realise how lucky they are this isn’t them.

You can’t tell someone on how to deal with losing their child . Just because they chose to film it doesn’t make them bad parents or not having compassion for their daughter. Death is a natural thing and a lot of people don’t even get a chance to say goodbye. They wanted to have and share the last moments of her life on film & probably for them self and to show others who might be or have gone through similar situations know that they’re not alone .

I watched a Frontline episode recently called "Being Mortal" where a doctor talked about how bad the medical profession can be at having very honest and tough conversations about death. And so often families don't know how dire their loved one's prognosis truly is and decisions about hospice and palliative care can't be made. This feels like a heartbreaking example of this problem. We have to get better at talking about death

Yes! Death needs to be destigmatized because we all will face it. Its one of the few things in this world that every single person will go through. Even as a person with a chronic disease my dr appointments are confusing at best. Families need to be told the truth as soon as that decline starts to happen because it will make the death a little less traumatic.

***** Yes, Juliana was exhausted from cruel cancer treatment during NINE years. And they are cruel treatments because destroy our organs, the quimo destroy both good cells and cancer cells, everybody knows that ¡¡¡ it is poison for Heaven sake!!! at least thats what the doctor say. Of course Juliana was very strong to keep on those years fighting but she was also HUMAN, and not the only girl who has died from cancer. It is very difficult to understand the death of a child much more if she is your own daughter, I don´t think the intention of the doctors was to kill Juliana. They did what they could and we are wrong if we think that they are God and can do miracles. And I don´t go away from here because I love and admire Juliana and her family.

If u are sent home on hospice that means your life is ending! That's what hospice is, end of life care/ comfort care! The goal is to keep her comfortable while she is actively dieing! The doctors did nothing wrong! Some families just do not want to except that! They want to force the person to fight and suffer and that is just selfish! But unfortunately some families just don't get it or accept it! I work in nursing and I do hospice care and I see so many families like this, Its so sad and u can't blame them because u don't know how it feels to be in their shoes all u can do is do your job and try your best to support the family. She didn’t die from opioid overdose, she died because her poor little body just gave out, I don’t know why her parents can’t see that. This cancer and any OTHER cancer CAN BE HEALED...the problem is we're conditioned to believe it cant be cured so we spend money, lots of money to pay everyone to watch a patient die... Do YOU realize that after a patient’s 1st remission if the cancer returns in another site that it’s the cells from the first cancer. So basically those cancer cells are everywhere in their body + WILL keep “waking up” in the form of new tumours that become increasingly resistant to chemotherapy. So if the Dr’s did their job right + told the parents the truth- they should have let her die peacefully when Juliana felt she was ready to escape the 7 years of horrible suffering she’s been told to go through “to inspire millions of people”- bullshit! She’s responsible to herself. As far as I’m concerned this makes me furious. Unnecessary suffering! Tons of videos + picture flashes every 10 minutes sometime. Aside from the fact that this little lady is dying from cancer, there are several quite disturbing aspects to this, some that people have already mentioned in the comments. I don’t think her final hours were particularly well handled in terms of pain control and a general misunderstanding of the physiological process of death itself. I also get the feeling that Mom resents that camera at points, which I would too. I don’t understand this obsession with filming everything and missing the moments because of it.

@@chellefell1331 If they knew the parents were in denial and not accepting the circumstances, they should have realized that they couldn't have given Juliana proper care due to their states of minds. Not bashing anybody but Juliana should have remained in the hospital under these circumstances, have a nice chance to say goodbye to everybody in a peaceful, quiet manner and be placed under right pain medication and in a medically induced coma so she could pass away peacefully as her body shut down. The Carvers were not in the right headspace to help their daughter's process when they were constantly denying the obvious signs that she was dying and I think the hospital should have realized that and intervene for Juliana's sake and not let her go home. I pray for healing for everybody involved. Juliana was such a little angel who deserved more in life but is now healthy and pain free in the arms of Jesus.

Now that I have had time to think about this, I think the reason why the hospital stopped any new treatment is because they felt she had been through enough. She knew was not going to get better, even though the parents wanted her to press on, you can see she had gone a long ways already, she was suffering, by the time they took her home she was barely eating , I think the hospital knew she had been through a lot in her well young life, and enough was enough. I have read the whole story, and I cry every time I think of what she went through, her bravery, her courage, and her willingness to keep fighting, and always with smiles, and love for all who loved her back. It is because of things like this that I question my own faith!

The hospital didn't stop new treatment. After they found that she has cancer again, they scheduled treatment for the following week. Juliana was taken home only for the weekend and should be back on Monday. But the day before she left hospital, they gave her a doubled dose of painkillers and from that on she declined rapidly. But nobody had any idea that she could die 2 days later. Nobody was prepared for the catastrophe. After she had died the hospital officials refused answering the parents' questions. The parents guessed that she could have died of an overdose of her painmeds. And in my opinion is that the most probably explanation for what's happend with Juliana that weekend when she died with her parents at home.

This poor little girl should have been in a hospice or properly medicated so she didn't experience so much stress and pain. At the 11th hour the parents dropped the ball. This family's actions are not malicious- at least Tammy's aren't. They are the result of a lack of education and support regarding the dying process. It was Juliana's care team's responsibility to disclose that objectively, she was nearing death. Often in paediatric oncology, parents and care teams hold on to relentless hope of remission, which lends itself to having palliation and or hospice forgotten about. It was the care team's responsibility to tell the Carvers that Juliana was going to pass, or at least have a discussion in advance as to what Juliana and her family wanted done in end of life care. It's clear that these conversations were never held, or at least were quite short and surface level because there was zero contingent plan as to what would be done when she neared death. Her parents deserved an objective conversation to warn them that she was essentially palliative. They had little education on how close to death she was, and how to care for her in her final moments. This girl had a poor end-of-life experience due to her parents being ill prepared to support her emotionally and physically in dying. This girl deserved to have adequate analgesia, adequate respiratory support, and nursing care; She deserved to be held by her family and to be told it was okay to pass, not "you'll get better". Instead of building a bridge to a peaceful death, she was led off a cliff's edge.

It is also clear that their little girl wants to interact with them, and they obviously want to prolong her life for as long as they could. I am full of respect for them. The hospital are the ones resonsible for administering her pain medication, they are the qualified ones who know how much pain she is in. What a loyal friend Maddie was. I'm a veterinary nurse, and I've seen a few shelter dogs that were with their owners when they died. I think they really go through their own mourning, there's something really special about the bond between dogs and their people. Also, it's their instinct to lick like crazy when they have their own problems, it's like they think the more they lick the better they'll get. Maddie knew something was wrong, and was doing the best she could (like the rest of you) to help her girl.

When someone is dying whether over a couple of weeks or days, the last thing he or she wants is oral nourishment. Not only is thirst gone, but food is repulsive and often nauseating, and you run the risk of having her aspirate. Trying to push food or fluids on the dying patient can even be considered abusive in spite of the fact that you think you are helping. Wetting her lips is a safer thing to do.

This video is a great teaching tool, actually. It teaches the what not to do and could be a very good eye opener for a lot of people who might be tempted to do the same with a loved one, at the time of actively dying. The family obviously was completely ignorant of the dying process or else things would of been done completely differently. So to turn this video into a positive, it would be awesome that it be used as a tool. As a hospice volunteer, I’ve heard of families doing what this family did, yet seeing it, is wayyyyy more effective in teaching about the dying process and the do’s and don’ts!!! This family would of been better equipped to act appropriately, should they had known what is taught in hospice and palliative care!!!

This was a very personal video and I usually don't make my opinions known but this was heartbreaking to watch and I needed to say this. I think the first thing this family should have done was educated themselves on the dying process. I have worked in nursing and hospice care for 16 years and I can say that I don't believe there was any negligence done against this beautiful little girl. She went through a lot. Her little body was exhausted and the cancer is what caused her death. At 43:15 I could tell she was getting close to passing. She was struggling to breath, uncomfortable and in pain. I believe that she wasn't medicated enough towards the end. If she was awake and struggling that much she need something to keep her comfortable. Taking her home and moving her around from the hospital was to much for her body to handle but im sure once she got there she was right where she wanted to be and she passed away surrounded by things she found comfort in and that she loved. What I didn't see though was her being held, or comforted, kisses, being told she was loved or that it was ok to go. That is the biggest tragedy besides the cancer. I think the parents are looking for someone to blame and didn't understand what the dying process is like. Instead of trying to sue the hospital for negligence that clearly didn't happen they should let Julianas beautiful soul rest and focus on her memory and her life instead of her death instead of who they can hold accountable

I have to agree with you on many parts...especially the being held part. However, the family did the best they could... the helplessness was written all over the mothers face. When a loved one suffers like this, you want to scream but you try to do just about anything to help in any way possible. It appears to be somewhat clumsy maybe but when you are not in the profession, you the best you can. What I really found disturbing that all the father did was film... he will never get back the time to hold his daughter tight and to tell her her loves her. The whole family seemed to be irritated by filming and photos.

God she was in so much pain at the end. They should have had her sedated and let her pass peacefully. God that’s torture. I can’t even imagine how she felt all she could do was moan uh huh. Truly devastating. May she Rest In Peace and live peacefully in heaven.

It's not mourning because of pain. It is life leaving the body, body functions driving down, air leaving the airway...it's more like a pipe. People who are under strong pain meds do this when they die. Complete sedating is depriving the human of the time he/she needs to let go of life.

Miyuki Jades I’m not sure any of us privileged to witness these final days need to use the word ‘should’ in any of our comments. This family have walked a very long and challenging road are are definitely qualified to make decisions that work for them. Do we need to assume that the parents and the 14 year old have never discussed end of life interventions available?

All I see in this video is a young girl who fought hard for her life, but eventually couldn’t do it anymore. This baby spent majority of her life battling cancer. As a parent, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to go through this. You’re trying to stay strong for your child, but breaking down behind closed doors. Nobody wants to see their kid in pain. Nobody wants to feel like they can’t help their child. Nobody chooses to go through situations like this. These parents were learning as the days passed by. Nobody finds out their kid has cancer & immediately knows what to do. Some things they did right & others they may have not. But, the one thing that stands clear is they loved their daughter. As I scroll through & read the comments, I want to say thank you to the people who RESPECTFULLY educated others on how to handle certain situations. As far as the people bashing the parents, the little girl was half the mom & half the dad. They had every right to decide what to do with their daughter. The only thing that mattered was she was loved & they did damn good job of it, until her last breath. This family put her story out to educate others. Too also show other families they are not alone. Her memory will live on through their foundation they started, in honor of her. RIP Baby Girl 👼💕

I work with hospice patients. To anyone watching this, please don’t give food or fluids once the dying person isn’t able to safely swallow. This isn’t comfort. Instead, use a sponge on a stick, dipped in water to moisten the mouth. Chapstick is nice on lips. A cool or warm wet washcloth to wash face and neck. This child suffered because family lacked education on the dying process.

Dear God in Heaven, take this beautiful child into your arms and hold her there in peace and no more suffering. No child should ever have to endure this; no parent should either. The bravery, courage and boundless hope and love shown by this family should teach all of us about the power of love. Our own trials and challenges seem so very trivial in the grand scheme of things. This disease needs to be wiped from the face of the earth.

It breaks my heart to know Tammy called Hospice and they never returned her calls and never showed up to help them with Julie's last days. And they released her from PICU to home? There is usually and step down process. If they were going to skip it so she could die at home fine but they never told John & Tammy their child was actively dying? I'm so sorry for the extra misery you and she went through as the entire medical community left you alone in your darkest time. 💔

I am a volunteer for Hospice and this makes no sense to me. We always return calls. The hospital would have known death was imminent. The signs were there even to a lay person like me. The internet is full of videos addressing these sign & symptoms. There are many videos from Hospice workers with phone numbers you can call. This confuses me a great deal.

Not trying to hate on grieving parents, but often times grieving people aren’t the most rational… or they want to blame somewhere have it be someone’s fault etc because it’s hard to accept the painful fact their child passed from the disease. I see a lotttt of “medical negligence” videos where people are saying stuff that just could not have happened in the way they describe. Some can’t read between the lines, they are in active denial even WHEN the doctors tell them “you are dying”/“your child has terminal illness and will not recover, make the time she has her quality”:

I've been through this twice. It's absolutely clear from this video she was near death even when she left the hospital. On both occasions, we have had new treatment scheduled and on both occasions the decline was shocking in its quickness. We had been expecting to go back for more chemo but the body just gave up. Cancer killed your daughter, nothing more. If the painkillers had something to do with it then they likely only accelerated the inevitable. Be thankful your child was not in pain when she passed.

These few moments had such uplifting effect on Juliana. That she is struggling to breathe is obvious, yet these few moments shown in this video had definitely been positive for Juliana. The fact she is so sick cannot be changed, but a few moments of normalcy is wonderful. Having being critically with lung disease last year snd almost not making it, I can almost feel her struggles to breathe. Now she is pain free. May Juliana Rest In Peace, angle.🙏❤️

I had spoken out against the use of exploitation, and i made my opinion known , however, i truly truly believe this family was doing everything they could to save their baby. My god, if my child went through that, I may not tape every little thing and what this family did was extremely graphic but They had the best of intentions. Whether u disagree with them or not, they aren't the worst. They were amazing. Aside from the excessive exploitation (that is their way of trying to heal) this child was LOVED. She was loved and she knew it. And so, I can't help but admire this families strength and In spite of the exploitation, they are wonderful parents. They were fighting for her and she deserved the right to try to live. These people adopted SIX children from dire straights. They proved themselves. Then again, they didn't need to. They lost their girl . The deserve to grieve their own way. I wrote to John and chided him for his exploitation. I should have kept my mouth shut. I've never lost a child to cancer.

You can clearly see her health declining unfortunately with cancer no one can ever give you an exact approximation of her health and say we feel you should say ur goodbyes. She was weak she had a cpap machine that forces her to breath so that tells you that her lungs were very weak. Please take this advice and accept that she was with u her last days and she was happy
