One Singapore firm took more than 10 years of multiple failed hires before settling on the right general manager for its Johor factory. Could the brain drain in Johor discourage Singapore companies from moving operations across the Causeway? Read: cna.asia/4ditpi4

Company complaining about lack of skilled workers normally are those that don't give a damn to develop their own workers' skillset from within. They expect airdrop 'expert' to work for them while neglecting developing their own in-house hire. Good company who will sustain for the long-term are those that took in unskilled workers who want to learn and train them up to the skillset that the company need. No such thing as lack of skilled workers for these companies.

Companies don't bother in upskilling workers. They expect workers to upskill themselves at their own expenses to aid company growth!

The salary in Singapore is low mostly for fw but the exchange rate between sgd to myr is high. But the most top reason Johoreans work in Singapore is due to earn sgd and spend in myr.

Of course. If working in sg, malaysians don't benefit from the salary and currency exchange , why would the wake up so early to work here everyday? But would all of them admit it?😅

What to do? Pay your workers more instead of always trying to find that skillful worker with family /personal problems who cannot shift to Singapore.

will always be a problem...once the fresh grads pick up some experience, they will work in SIN for higher pay..for all positions..will be a lose lose situation for Johor..1. Waste time grooming 2. Constantly looking and grooming fresh workers..never ending cycle..

If you pay Singaporean salary you will also be able get SG workers. The movement of workers can also happen the other way. Don't understand what the problem is..the solution is obvious.

I don't understand, why company don't look within to groom and promote internal talent, instead to look for talent outside of the company? Firstly, external talent might not fit into the company working culture. Secondly, nowadays people just job hop around every 1.5 - 2 years to get their salary increase as they don't have intention to stay long.

People from other states willing to move to Johor if the salary is good despite Singapore rate is better but thats only about working (5 days). How about weekend (living part) of Johior? It is kinda lame & boring..JB is really a low class city with not so beautiful landscape and attractions to do recreation, wellness activity to relief after working on weekdays. Prefer to work in Klang Valley or even Penang with better gardens, amenities, attractions... The JB metro government should improve their cities lah. Dont just look at infrastructure like roads & buildings... look at your lousy museum, ugly landscape.. Sorry to say, no live work balance in Johor. See SG can create Jewel and Gardens by the bay...all artificials..but world class. JB? So pale in comparison.

Technology like AI and such are even more expensive than hiring skilled workers. Not all industries and companies are suitable for technology. There is a cost vs revenue consideration. It is naive and out-of-touch to assume that all industries and companies earn enough to afford the high cost of technology investment and more importantly maintenance of such technology setup. Gov subsidies only cover the initial investment part of the equation but not the recurring maintenance cost and renewal/upgrade cost. Such high technology cost may not be sustainable for some companies in the long run.

While many employers complained about the lack of skilled employees, I instead complained about the lack of skilled employers. That is the root of the problem. IF we have skilled bosses, they will be able to solve the skilled worker problem within their companies. But what we have is a bunch of unskilled cry babies bosses complaining day in day out non-stop (how long have these ppl complained about lack of skilled worker already? Last 30 years since? IF they have spent that last 30 years doing something about their skilled worker issue, then they will not have this problem today. Gov importing 'skilled worker' for these cry babies is not helping the matter as it further encourage their parasitic reliance on 'foreign talent' neglecting developing their own in-house expertise aka plucking the low-hanging fruit)
