10:06 That's usually a good idea because I've noticed that Windows likes to check the bootloader from time to time during feature updates, and if it sees grub or something else it'll just overwrite it and replace it with the Windows boot manager. So generally I just give each operating system a whole drive unto itself.

I forgot to even mention the last time I tried to dual boot with UFEI and Secure boot now Windows would throw a fit and lose time and everything. Linux wouldn't work as well either just odd. Security got higher and I guess ruined how it all worked.

I've had the issue with time before because Linux and Windows behave differently. Linux assumes your BIOS clock is set to UTC and then offsets the operating system to your selected time zone. So if you tell it you're in EST it will sync its clock and then set the BIOS clock 5 hours ahead to UTC time. There's a way to fix this, one distribution I used once asked me about it but I don't remember which one. It might be Debian because I haven't had the issue in a while. Windows on the other hand assumes your BIOS is set to local time and syncs itself with that first. Which means if Linux sets your BIOS to UTC and then you reboot into Windows your time will be off.

@@techholler Yep because if your time is too far off even network traffic won't work properly. Weird how your clock being wrong can break your ability to use the internet.

6:12 I think a lot of peoples' opinions on things are influenced by what they were raised with and grew accustomed to. It takes a lot of work to learn a whole new operating system, especially one as fragmented and diverse as Linux.

While maybe true, I grew up on Windows since 3.11 and MS DOS before that. Loved Windows for a long time... but Windows 8, 10 and 11 have been so bad, I finally made the switch to Linux and it's been so much better, especially with gaming. I don't see myself going back unless there are major changes done at Microsoft and the Windows development team to get things better.
@gerowen5 ай бұрын
@@UncleUncleRj I agree. I grew up with DOS, then Windows 3.11 with a black and white screen, then 95, ME, XP, etc. Starting around 2005 I started experimenting with Mandrake Linux and have been almost exclusively Linux for many years now. I was just saying that, especially for normies I can see how learning a whole new operating system just seems daunting and scary. Even my mom seems confused by the lack of a "C drive" when I let her test drive a Linux distribution from time to time. Linux on the desktop has an uphill battle against literal lifetimes of habit and muscle memory formed on Windows. But, myself, my wife and even my kids all use Linux exclusively at home; the kids at our local schools all use Chromebooks and the Steam Deck has brought Linux gaming into millions of homes, so it may be slow, but Linux is slowly but surely making a place for itself within the personal computing space and not just on servers.

Fun fact; Windows XP didn't actually use up all of the space on a 700MB CD, but in order to use up the unused space they added a copy of Microsoft Bob to every disc, but they encrypted it. The guy who did it said he doesn't know the decryption key, he just banged on the keyboard to generate random characters and hit enter.

Linux for me. Debian 12 on a Thinkpad x280. Everything works perfectly, and it hasn't crashed once in the past several months since i did this install.

Windows 3.1 Was just a shell and not an Operating System. Windows NT was a Operating System with a Graphical User Interface back then. Off Course MacOS, OS/2, AIX and Xerox PARC where the other ones, that where widely used. When Windows 95/NT3.0 came the modern Windows standalone OS was born.

I'm on Windows 10 LTSC debloated iso side. beats linux right of the water and don't have to lose time tinkering or looking for workarounds to make the damn gpu work.

I’ve heard good things about LTSC I think I tried to use it and Xbox gaming wouldn’t work on it or something. It’s been a while since that though.

Linux. I'm so done with Windows. I should say I'm done with Microsoft. Windows is so bloated and full of spyware now... Linux has better security, and runs so much better. Even gaming is better on Linux. I don't think I have a game on Steam that doesn't run on Linux, and they run better with higher FPS than on Windows.
