Some of these were actually really hard to answer. I'm a casual player who plays to win but winning is very much secondary to having fun time with thematic armies and asymmetric scenarios. Also, if i was sitting on pile of metallic chaos dwarfs. Did I already have an army or did I build an army only when I finally got change to put them together on the table with the old world?

I love that you guys are doing a survey! But some things to consider: 1) Always expect an internal survey to lean heavily in one direction. At this point, most of the respondents are your regular viewers who hold many of the same opinions you do. It's a recipe for an echo chamber. 2) Voluntary surveys are inherently limiting because only the most engaged members of a community (and typically those with the strongest opinions) will bother to take them... aka the "vocal minority." That said... thank you for doing this! I just took the survey, and it was very well written!

@maltehaster8996Сағат бұрын
I don't know. With so many factions yet to be released, asking what sbd plays might given a less accurate result. A lot of people might not be playing High Elves right know because maybe they sold the army they had lovingly collected during their formative years to some rando on ebay for way too little money, because they didn't think the models were painted "particularly well" and they probably weren't but they were theirs and they carried the unconcerned touch of a curious, youthful spirit willing to explore, willing to take risks. A spirit, now turning spectre because it has lost its anchor and, God, that was so stupid!!!!!! ...Or something... Just a thought

@DergonBaals No doubt but I feel the warhammer community is pretty good at telling you when they don't like something. Also warhammer flavor isnt that hard to get right. Just follow a handful of rules like standard human level ability is a 3, superhuman stats should be a 4 (of course excluding leadership, attacks and movement) below human in a stat should a 2, see orc initiative vs empire state troops vs a chaos warrior for a perfect example scaling With little exceptions like elves that sort of wind up as their own rule of thumb.

After a year... I’ve found that, if the players are “reasonable” (whatever that means) and aren’t going out of their way to break the game, the rules are fine. If you’re dealing with people who get the most enjoyment out of exploiting the rules then you’re just playing a different game.
@SquareBasedOldWorldКүн бұрын
I mean it COULD be argued that the folks playing to the letter of the rules are the ones playing the game. Others a playing a self-comped version of it. And then it becomes a question of unwritten social norms and I've found that's a recipe for discord. I guess that's why I'm very tempted to advocate for something that brings the game closer to an agreed upon middle ground. But I dunno. That's why we asked haha.
@DergonBaalsКүн бұрын
You’ve got the right of it. If someone is trying to break the game wide open then it’s going to need constant balance updates like AoS and 40k, and fuck that. It’s not like Necromunda or Blood Bowl need those, and those games are broken as hell. People just aren’t in the right headspace for treating a wargame as a narrative and fluff driven exercise instead of playing is the most powerful at the time, which is super not what TOW is geared towards. This is a game where people need to build and paint models, not one where you can just select what you want to play on a menu screen. It takes time and effort just to get to play, and encouraging competitive play as a primary form of gameplay in such a small community is only going to make people not want to paint their favourite minis and in turn dissuade people from playing, because at least some of your minis are never going to be valid in a competitive space.

The only good thing for my skaven army so far is that as they never see the table more and more of the horde is getting painted... they hit the table thrice to crushing defeat every time. I would play the lists you make! As long as you took data into fixing any issues that crop up, as they always do, id play the crap out of it. Tournament Symmetry in terrain is handy. For home games we used to just make a cool looking board. There were several terrain generators in at least one the old fantasy rule books. Some armies books even had themed ones in, they were pretty fun to play on occasion.

There should be different levels of forrests: So, managed forrests like near a town should be either open or difficult terrain that obstruct LoS. These will basically be grown like a vinyard, lines of trees, no large branches, and small thin branches that are harvested to create wattle. Then there's forrests that are out in the wilds of the empire, these are filled with either game for hunters, or beastmen and other griblies. They should be difficult or dangerous terrain. Then last of all there's the mystical forrests which are roused to wrath, over grown, and angry. They should be dangerous terrain and possibly offer some kind of bonus to a unit inside of it.

My opinion about the renegate updates in the future is that as long as they are fully functional their balance questions are secondary. I frankly don't care where that starts, here or some forums or where ever. At least Chaos Dwarfs don't feel like they need changes (except k'daai), it's fun list with loads of build options and interesting restrictions. Obviously I would love to have them retain relative balance status and slightly undertuned is probably safe bet with community updates. Still, playable and fun, it's a dice game.

I think in general people are playing the game because they like the game; so going too wild with changes turn people off. However, there are clearly gaps that have been overlooked and a community FAQ to address those is great to have consistent rulings between tables. But to have a baseline understanding for people coming to an event, sticking to the book as much as we can is ideal.

I'll do the survey, but first I'd like to comment on the conversation about terrain. I really love usable terrain that's simple and easy to use, as well as looks good. I've been using Txlari factory for all my rank and flank needs, and it's worked out. I've found that terrain most definitely should be the third player, and should make getting to grips with the opponent a problem in and of itself. For the game I play (Conquest), every table I set up has between 6-8 6"x9" zonal forests, hills, water features, and buildings to create a 'cluttered' and difficult to fight on battlefield. I hope that with Old World I can get folks to do that as well, if only to create interesting battles. I'd plug the whole table rating video I did with a Conquest Content Creator, but that might be in poor form....

Filled in the survey. Got to say that the numerous snarky remarks towards JTY were probably not necessary. You guys already kinda lost a bit of credit when you went off on one about the FAQ, calling it 'tragic' and having a metaphysical rant about what intent is. It honestly comes across as a bit entitled and petty. For context, I play regularly and went to an uncomped RTT at the weekend - it was completely fine. Having played in various 40k tournament standards over the years, most notably UKTC, I personally have found it distasteful to have a small number of people effectively decide the way the game is played. The UKTC circuit occasionally making fairly arbitrary balance changes and being fairly bland and uninteractive was part of the reason I stopped 40k at any reasonable level. I feel like trying to force 'comp' into this game is misguided at best and needs a light touch without taking away the essence of what is a hugely fun game. Appreciate what you guys do, and I hope some of the tone I'm getting from this is inferred rather than intended.
@SquareBasedOldWorldКүн бұрын
We love JTY. We don't love bad FAQs. If the FAQ wasn't good, I'm gonna bet it's because of resources allocated, not because the designers don't wish they could do more. And we always say as much. The game might be fun, and it might have good vibes... but it's not a finished product. Those things can both be true. And if there's a balancing act we aim for, it's that.

@@SquareBasedOldWorld Appreciate the response to clarify - whenever I see individuals highlighted I just get flashbacks to previous times individuals have recieved undue pilloring from the community. I have a general wariness for content creators (not you specifically) trying to angle their way into the game, especially if they have something to gain financially - again probably a reaction to how the 40k competitive ecosystem has evolved with some real ethical grey areas arising. I agree the game is not finished from the perspective of the support for legacy factions. They should have been a part of it and clearly were intended to be at some point. In general GW has massively underestimated the appeal of its specialist games. It would not surprise me that the congested release schedule and the rumoured upcoming Heresy 3.0 release has had an impact on the teams that work for the specialist games division.

Don't be so sure about a Cathayan Dragon Lord being the 'worst in the game' due to being unmounted. Galrauch and the Warp Fire Dragon would like to have words with you.... from all 3 heads. Galraunch has 3+ armor and a built in 5+ Regen, in addition to being a lvl 4 mage and 3 different breath weapons, and would likely be a good look at what the Cathayan Dragons would be like. All of the mare spell casters after all. The Warpfire dragon, has a 4+ armor save and again, a built in 5+ Regen, who also gains a 5+ ward save vs magic or fire,while nulling all wards saves in a 3 inch aura besides his own. It also has an artillery Mortar style Breath weapon to shake things up a bit. Solo Dragons are not looking weak, if anything the ridden dragons need the riders to match up.

I play Flames of War and Battlefront issue 'Dynamic points' once or twice a year in which they release beta points, then a survey release new optional points that players can use, which is widely adopted. I can say it works well. It took Battlefront a while to come around to the idea but in the beginning, the game was heavily influenced by a certain meta with certain units under/over costsed that affected the game negatively. This was most profound in the beginning. ToW has many similarities to this in regards to the monster/magic/msu approach to competitive gaming which to me doesn't seem to reflect what ToW should be. I hope TOs are willing to try things and that players are open to points or rules changes (even if they're just optional) that aim to rebalance the game.

38:38 dude keep politics out of this please. Come here for information on the hobby and game I love, not someone's passive aggressive political thoughts.

Absolutely not. Trump is a rapist and fascist

Hi there, it's Val. We've always made political comments and we always will. I'm sorry if this alienates you, but there are lots of creators out there who would be happy to not offend you in exchange for your viewership. Also you just took umbrage with the idea of defending "liberal values and reasonableness" which ... y'know... is pretty dang low on the pyramid of inflammatory political speech.

Old world is bad game with no soul with deckbuilding meta problems displacing most of other aspect of hobby. I still enjoy watching this show.

Old world has an old soul and the decks are quite robust!!!!

I would have to disagree. It is a good game there are no problems old world has that 40k doesn’t have. The high tournament meta will always look weird compared to the average players army
@playfulruss4227Күн бұрын
@@Iratepaddy I think the problem I find is that meta is very much in local circumstances. It might be the Scottish community is very competitive but I find it beyond intimidating to really play as I just want a soft historical game - something that could genuinely happen in 2280 as a normal fight/story - not the genuinely apocalyptic-feeling armies people tend to field.

@@playfulruss4227 thats definitely a localized problem there are two types of people so far I’ve seen in Canada at least. You have your sweaty tournament player who only really play once every month or two in tourneys. Then guys like l me who pop in after work for a game at the lgs here and there and those games are always super awesome most people cannot afford to make massive armies to the current meta and being either what they had in the 8th ed or they just use what came in the starters with some additions

@@Iratepaddy I love the sound of you and your comrades - I am sure similar exist, but I'm struggling with tow because everyone seems to play maximum carnage locally - not what I want 😂
