I was very nervous about merging from slip roads on the run-up to my test, so the weekend before I went out to a reasonably busy dual carriageway near my house and stood on the footbridge for a while watching traffic merging. And I did feel a lot more confident after being able to observe how everything worked smoothly with a little bit of give and take but no horns, sudden manoeuvres or anything like that that I saw. It turns out that, contrary to my rather jaded and cynical view of humanity, the vast majority of drivers aren't assholes and are perfectly happy to help people merge ahead of them because that's how they would expect to be treated in turn. Result: on the actual test with my new-found confidence I knew exactly what to do: match speed, signal, aim for a gap, quick blind spot check and in you go. The other drivers politely let me in, job done.

Returning from Liverpool to Warrington along M62. For some reason, I exit the motorway earlier. Then, I stayed calm following the satnav back to M62 heading to M6. Finally, I was back home and only 10 minutes late. It's a good experience. I told myself it would go wrong sometimes, usually wrong exit and it's a part of your journey. But the most important thing is that you have to be cool, back to the correct route and enjoy the rest of your journey. Safe driving.

My two biggest gripes (I'm being polite!) on motorways are still the number of drivers who never move from the middle lane and the motorists who have no idea how to drive back on to the live lanes from being on the hard shoulder. They pull on to the live lane from almost a stationary start instead of building up speed on the hard shoulder and then joining the live lanes.

@@ConquerDriving How is a motorist in the driving lane know a vehicle in any of the lanes to it's right 2,3 or 4 is having a problem that slower him down. If theres a hogger doing 50 mph in lane 4 of a motorway surely you don't expect all other lanes to slow down to that speed. From the very moment a car is having engine trouble the driver should start indicating to head for the hard shoulder and not leave it until it's moving at walking pace.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct, the law exists because people need to be able to leave and passing on the left prevents them from leaving. However just because someone is driving inappropriately or breaking the law won't excuse you for breaking the law. It's frustrating when people stick in the middle lane at 50mph I know. You need to go to the right lane to pass or if the police see you pass on the left you will likely get 3 points and a £100 fine unless it's in busy slow traffic.
@Seanmcdhuibhne
@Seanmcdhuibhne 4 жыл бұрын
@@ConquerDriving But you are breaking no law by passing on left in UK. There is nothing in the Highway Code or the RTA that states it's illegal. Again if there is a hogger in lane 4 doing 50 you wouldn't expect everybody wanting to pass (except trucks and buses) must move over to queue in lane 4. It if the hogger was in lane 3 lane then all of those in lanes 1,2 and 3 would have to move to 4 . All lanes moving into lane 4 is asking for a collision and a very high chance of that becoming fatal. Maybe you can point out to me where in law it disproves my point.

Been driving for over a year. And had some old fart pullout on me at a slip road. I couldn’t change lane as I was focused on my lane position for the roundabout and checking the right lane was clear. Ended up having to quickly change into the right lane (that I checked) to avoid crashing. The traffic was busy and he was stopped but decided to pull out. Old people shouldn’t be driving. Always be aware of this. Before a slip road check your lanes and decide what you would do if someone pulls out. Which they did.

I remember when I first passed, I got in a bit of bother, two lorries were driving quite close to each other, which is intimidating enough in a hatchback, they were going too fast for me to get out in front and the slip road was very short, so I had slow right down which isnt fun when you need to merge at low speed. Luckily, the next chap behind the lorries could see what was going on, slowed right down, gave me a gap and flashed his lights for me to join. I thought about it for a while after as I wanted to know what I did wrong and learn from it, I matched the speed of the traffic, looked for a gap, but it wasn't there, not much else I could have done, the second lorry shouldn't have been driving so close to the other in my opinion.

This is a real problem that instructors don’t tell anything about. They think this situation doesn’t exist!! I had a similar experience with a lorry, I had to slow down hard and then join slowly after the lorry . The next car was far away , so didn’t had any problem with that.

The A34 Newbury bypass has really short slip roads. I would welcome how you deal with merging onto the road using these. There is not enough room to speed up to match that of the traffic so you're forced to either stop and wait for a gap or hope that cars in the inside lane move over to let you in. Obviously, stopping leads to the danger of being hit from behind.

With very short slip roads it can be normal to stop, but as they're short traffic on them isn't fast so it isn't such an issue.

if only drivers in Australia understood your instructions about how to enter a freeway and merge with the flow of traffic we wouldn't have freeway carparks. In my city, we're only just getting "smart freeway" signage installed here (the variable speed zone signage, the large electronic noticeboard for traffic alerts and traffic lights at freeway on-ramps etc to pause incoming traffic, to mange the flow better.

Good point at 06:58. Satnavs can be misleading. One must first know how to read signs.

Whoever is learning to drive, one thing you will see often, very annoying and highly dangerous is when some people will try to join dual carriageway/motorway by reaching maximum speed of 35-50mph, even though there is normal 70mph traffic on the main road. I am not talking about areas where the joining area is very small, but about proper long downhill slip roads.... Please always, try to match the speed of the cars on the main road, otherwise it becomes very dangerous for cars behind on the slip road, or for cars on main road. Thank you.

Another great easy to understand video. I cannot understand why you don't get more likes. I have one question. I passed my test just over 40 years ago. My instructor told me, that you should start signalling to join a motorway or duel carriageway just as you pass the barrier at the bottom hill part of the slip road. Signalling is like asking permission to join the traffic. It annoys me when I see motorists leave their signalling till the last minute and barge in. Am I being to fussy or what?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
There is no set point for when you should signal but try to give everyone enough notice and if a signal is misleading it's best not to signal. Many people signal late or not at all but this is all part and parcel of driving and something we all deal with everyday. By the way, the signal is not asking for permission, it's supposed to state what you are doing. But yes, it does get used for asking and I personally have no problem with this but that's how it is.

@@ConquerDriving Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. Better than some that I could mention. Perhaps I used the wrong term, "asking permission", maybe asking, "please let in", may sound better. As in your videos, you have explained my issue very well. Cheers.

when you're driving along a motorway approaching a junction/slip road should yo move over to the middle or right lane to allow cars. to join?
@heiltd1286
@heiltd1286 2 жыл бұрын
If someone is in the middle lane and should be in the left lane, I will stay in the left lane. If I'm driving faster than they are that is not undertaking. Undertaking is when you're behind someone and you move to the lane left of them, drive past them and immediately move to the right again. This is very dangerous and I would have thought illegal. Many times I will drive faster in the left lane than drivers in the middle lane who are unaware of the keep to the left rule only moving into the middle lane to overtake. If there are many slower vehicles in the left lane then you stay in the middle lane until you've overtaken them. Then, when you have overtaken them you move to the left lane. The right lane isn't a "fast" lane , but purely for overtaking.

@@ConquerDriving So in this scenario you've got to move from left lane to middle lane and then right lane to overtake and then once you're past them move back to left lane. In other words some idiot sitting in the middle lane is causing you to have to change 2 lanes to overtake and then 2 lanes again to return to the left lane. I'd suggest it's better to just stay where you are. And safer.
@heiltd1286
@heiltd1286 2 жыл бұрын
@@ConquerDriving The logic of that is that if someone were to sit at 65 mph in what is erroneously referred to as "the fast lane" with no other traffic on the road ( this does happen.), then you cannot drive faster than 65 mph unless they move into the middle lane or the far left lane on a 3 lane motorway. That seems absurd to me. I'd keep driving at 70 mph ( no faster of course) on the left lane. It's not for me to alter my driving because of people who can't drive properly or try to enforce good driving habits on others. Unless I have to that is, to avoid an accident.

No it not. Undertaking has nothing to do with changing lanes. It's simply overtaking on the left. Where did you dig that rubbish from?

@@MrJohnny3shoes If some inept drivers are sitting in the middle lane and I'm in the left lane of a three lane motorway, I will overtake them in the far left lane. I'm doing nothing wrong as I'm keeping to the left ( in UK). They're the ones in the wrong not being in the left lane. You see this all the time. A third of drivers shouldn't be on the roads and driving licences should be subject to a retest every ten years.

Can I please ask you a question what is speed when you leave double lane
@Paul-ue8tn

It is surprising how many drivers expect to join a dual carriageway by just pulling out, expecting on coming cars to dive across to another lane, impacting others. When I have remained in lane there have been times where the driver joining gets quite irate even though there was ample space behind or in front of my car.

So I passed a year ago but still get really nervous entering motorways, and even worse when I’m already on trying to help someone else join, my way is usually to move lane to let them on but there’s often an idiot in the lane I want to move across to who will see me indicating to move and will see the car trying to enter, but the issue I have is them refusing to slow down and let me move so I end up practically stopping in the left lane to allow them on 🤦🏽‍♀️
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is slow down a bit to help them on. Moving over to another lane should only be done if there is enough free space for you. Most of the time people joining will be a similar speed to you so you won't have to slow much although every so often there will be a nervous driver entering very slowly.

Thank you for your very informative video. From reading the comments it seems my anxiety about joining motorways is quite common - I'm fine once on them! My question is: when the slip road has two lanes is it easier to merge onto the main road from the right lane of the slip road or the longer left lane? Or does it make no difference at all?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
The left lane is easier as you have more time to line up with a gap in traffic. Let the right lane merge first though.

I have a question because I was always wondering what you do in the situation when your on the slip road (auxiliary ramp) trying to merge and the slip road is ending but you can't get over? What do you do? Stop? Keep going? I have no idea if you keep going and don't drive on the hard shoulder then you are just merging at the end of the slip road and just forcing your way on to the motorway. Any advice would be appreciated because it is one thing that I can't seem to get a clear awnser about and whenever I need to drive the motorway my first thought is 'I hope I can merge on safely'
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
I hear you, it's a worry for new drivers but you should always be able to get over as people should make space. Aim for a space and don't stay next to lorries. I wouldn't crash into anyone but I merge confidently and assertively. It's not the place to stop and give way as that would be dangerous. There has only been a few occasions when the car has refused to let me in and I've had to slow down and go behind them. Also, use as much of the slip road as possible to give everyone on the main road time to help you.
