How do you deposit a joint check as a subcontractor?

Perfect basic intro! I would have liked to see a sample joint check as well as how to order them. I am looking to use joint checks as a method of control--my contractor was not paying subs or distributors which resulted in liens. Joint checks could have prevented this, I think.
