My wife and I ( only son ) have lived in joint family throughout. Joint consisted of parents and estranged sister and her children. Problem was mainly from sister and her husband and children. But my wife saw all of them thru' with patience and fortitude. She certainly had much more sense and patience than I did, because breakaways is not really possible. One can live separately in another house but old retired parents always need presence and support from son and daughter in law ( though they wont say it) and the problem follows you to your separate home. This is something that my wife understood at all times. My sister still lives with us ( and not her daughters, one of whom is in USA) and is still the same ( she is on psychiatric medicine). My wife is now quite old and is aptly supported by HER daughter in law to see the rest of her life thru'. Despite us pressurizing our son and Daughter in law to live separately, initially my son refused, now my D- I-L refuses, so much so that she even refuses to have separate kitchen.

Joint family is not good.Occasional family gathering during holidays and festivals is better. In today's world women should get equal rights and they are proving their qualities in all the fields.But in most of the cases women in joint families suffer the worst. Joint family is the symbol of ugly Indian patriarchy. Except Father or father in law and mother or mother in law ,others should not be allowed to live permanently with married couples.It creates problems regarding privacy and fulfillment of freedom and dream. Many people hails joint family by citing Indian culture,but culture and values are not constant,they may change from time to time. To my utter surprise,I have found people especially women living in joint family or coming from joint family are not at all liberal or open minded due to day to day tough adjustments and family politics. There may be some positive sides of joint family but negative sides are much more dominant in most of the cases. But thank God,today educated peoples are having one or two kids ,so big joint family will mostly become a thing of past.

Forget a joint family. After I got married my SIL sent her son to stay with us for more than a month. I was so exhausted doing all the work that I started feeling sick and I went to stay with my mom that time my SIL took her son home. I had started getting labor pains in the sixth month.my MIL was least bothered but my mom forced my husband to take me to my gynecologist who gave me tablets to stop the labor pains.
