In this interview, Air Force Technical Sergeant Robert Gutierrez discusses a firefight, in which he directed A-10 "Warthogs" from the ground against enemy targets within close proximity ("Danger Close"). For his heroism during this battle, Sergeant Gutierrez was awarded the Air Force Cross.
Background: On 5 October, 2009, Sergeant Gutierrez, a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) embedded with a special operations team in Afghanistan, was on a kill/capture mission for a high-value Taliban leader. The special operations team met the enemy, who was well prepared for a firefight, and became split and pinned down in a compound by intense, accurate, and effective small arms fire.
This portion of the interview picks up after Sergeant Gutierrez describes taking a bullet to the chest and the medical attention he received under fire. He was forced to abort a remotely piloted aircraft due to misidentification of the target (it was targeting their building). His team had also received a show of force flyby by F-16s, which departed early because their aircraft were low on fuel.
Sergeant Gutierrez describes how a flight of A-10s' lethal 30 MM strafe killed the enemy (who was within 20 feet of Gutierrez's position) and ultimately saved the lives of his teammates.
This video exemplifies why ground commanders still require "close-in" firepower (effects within 100 meters) on the spectrum of close air support (CAS), and why the A-10 is currently the world's premier CAS aircraft for these effects.

ProphetGaming there’s two types of TACPs. The one that fight with infantry teams and the other that fights with Spec Ops. The Spec Ops guys have to go through Selection. They end working with Rangers.

I know this is a massive Necro but basically yeah. The gun kinda sprays unless the hog is literally right on top of the target on its strafe so it's gun's auto balance works and drills every bullet in the same target . These guys got to hear 30mm hell rain down right next to them and lived to tell the tale.

god bless him and all the men fighting. god bless that pilot , god bless the A10 hog . may she fly forever and protect our boys and our country. sum of the best dollars spent for a military aircraft ever. feared by all militaries world wide . designed to do just what it does no more no less , protect our boys .simple , elegant, strait forward , economical, stick and rudder flying at is best. the last thing those dirt bags on that roof heard before they died was ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRP. and i don't think heard (P) at the end. hope they liked the red hot rounds the size of beer bottles hitting them at 2500 rounds a seconds. Sgt Gutierrez is a Combat Controller (CCT) not a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC).

Do some research before you write next time. You can be cct and jtac. Same as being TACP and jtac.

Daniel Musso Daniel, this is an attempt to meet you on middle ground, because nothing or no one is absolute. Yes, a TACP/JTAC do the same thing as CCT in some respects. The response, I posted was not to challenge or denounce what the original poster wrote, it was to state the correct Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC). As for the research, I'm a veteran of the United States Air Force and have interacted with these guys on varying levels, I know the difference.

JTAC is a certification, not a AFSC. He's a JTAC qualified CCT
