I absolutely love your point about Giorno. Good writing doesn’t necessitate a character undergoing a change, and it’s kinda weird that people think that characters have to undergo through some sort of profound reevaluation of life to make the writing good.
@Ammuze11

It's what a lot of people are used to. There's 3 types of character arcs the main character goes through. 1. The positive arc: The protagonist starts out at a low point and changes over the course of the story to become stronger, better and more heroic. (Luke Skywalker) 2. The negative arc: The protagonist either starts at a high point or a low point and progresses through their story until ultimately either becoming the villain or losing everything tragically. (Anakin Skywalker) 3. The flat arc: The protagonist is already developed and start out at a specific point in life that they need to be at. The character doesn't change at all through the story and, instead, changes the world around them with their actions. (This is a very uncommon arc in writing, so I don't have a good example.) They are meant to be the answer to a problem and they combat with the issue until the world is made better.

It's like Goku. Goku, in the several decades of Dragonball/Z, has changed VERY little as a character, if at all. But there's a reason why he's still one of the most iconic characters (and not just in anime/manga) of all time: people just like really like Goku. Giorno is like that for me. He's just a cool character that has some of the most badass moments in the entire franchise and he's also probably the most ruthless Jojo. And I do love how his connection to Dio makes him stand out from the more noble and outwardly heroic nature of the other Jojos.

People always complain about jotaro "not having a character arch" and "being to mean at the start" but the whole point is that he's an edgy teen acting out and his arch is him slowly opening up as the audience sees that his not some pointlessly violent teen but a caring man willing to fight for those he loves even if it means being seen as the badguy. Also, I 100% agree with the part 1 ending thing, every other part ends with the mc fighting the villain when someone gets a power up and the mc wins

1:17- like the inversion- DIO who had to work hard to get where he is and Jonathan who had everything handed to him- reverse once DIO becomes a vampire- with the former becoming increasingly inactive and reliant on others to do his bidding unless he literally has no other choice while Jonathan trains and continues to refine his technique until the day he literally dies.

Phantom Blood was much better paced in the manga, similar to Stardust Crusaders. The Tarkus and Bruford section felt slow and boring in the anime, but I found it way more enjoyable in the manga since the pacing was consistent with the rest of the story, unlike the anime which had a faster pacing in the beginning due to skipping a lot of scenes early on which ended up making the middle feel slower than it actually is.

I like Part 2 a lot but one of my main criticisms is that it feels none of the characters are allowed to accomplish anything except Joseph. Like Caesar's fight with Wamuu is cool and everything but he doesn't serve much of a purpose in the story otherwise except to motivate Joseph. Lisa Lisa is hyped up to be this powerful Hamon master, but all she gets to do is kill one vampire and then is cheated out of a fight that she probably could have won. She doesn't even get to do anything as Joseph and Caesar's master aside from kicking them in a hole and then having two nothing characters train them in a training arc that they literally skip over.

36:20 I believe Jodio is supposed to be a reimagining of Giorno. Despite his actions, thought process, and overall methods of pursuing his goal are significantly different compared to part 5 Giorno ; I'm completely convinced its a reimagining of Giorno. Not only that but Araki seems to have developed a strong pattern of having original continuity characters getting re-imagined as heroes/allies like Kira and Josuke from part 8. Despite Kira being part 3 villain, his story in part 8 parallels to him adopting a new identity as well as having to adapt to a new way of life with an entirely new family.

Phantom blood gets too much hate. While it lacks the insanity of later parts, the storytelling is excellent. Yes, it's formulaic, but in the best sort of way. It tells the classic hero's journey in a rather satisfying way. I often hear complaints that Jonathan and Dio are too one-dimensionally good and evil, but that's kind of the point. They're supposed to be the root of all good and evil in the following parts, giving them an almost godlike quality. Phantom Blood is pretty clearly a prequel for the story that Araki wanted to tell, whatever that was at the time. It definitely succeeds in this goal. We understand who the Joestars are and what Dio and the Stone mask are setting up. The story ultimately chose to pivot away from vampires and hamon, but Jonathan and Dio's legacy is felt well after this. The other big complaint I hear is that the arc is too short. Once again, this works to its benefit. Without stands to shake things up, it's best to just keep the story moving.

The deaths in jojolion are hilarious because we'd often have to wait a whole month, sometimes more, just to see if the character is actually dead or if they did that jojo thing of shrugging off a bullet to the head like it's nothing

It’s so strange too, at the time of reading it as it was coming out and then going back to read it, it felt so off seeing these characters just die. This is mainly coupled with the fact that I felt the pacing in the last few arcs were severely off reading it concurrently to the point where I didn’t even realise we were in the final fight until Wonder of U was defeated. The points mentioned in the video are completely right but also adding in that most of them just… happen?

While the anime sometimes suffers from pacing issues in some parts (namely part 3 and 1), its greatest strength is that it makes stands abilities way easier to understand and visualise. Like, King Crimson was one of the most confusing stands in the whole series for years until the anime made it relatively easy to understand his powers because you could actually see it. A lot of stands in part 6 suffered similar problems but imo the anime made them easier to understand
@shrimpchris6580
@shrimpchris6580 5 ай бұрын
King Crimson is a funky case because it relies on skipping time in a medium that fundamentally skips time between every panel so it's really hard to convey. On the flip side, it was likely inspired by this fact if I had to guess, so it was kind of stuck with this problem for ages

They of course have floors and everything but I did heard something from I am pretty sure a different video that said Giorno has the mind of Dio but the heart of Jonathan(As he is both their sons, technically). Jodio gives me more the vibe of more of Dio than Jonathan(So the opposite of Giorno, of course having his differences). I am not sure if others can see that, it's just a theory though. I actually really like the high voltage chapters. Idk, while it's kinda weird because it happens after the actual climax of the part, i think it's similar to the rolling stone chapters. It fits as more of an epilogue to the whole story. It also closes off a lot of things that would have been left unfinished if these chapters didn't exist. Spoilers: Lucy's relsove to finally be able to defend for herself, Diego's and Johnny's rivalry having a finality, finishing the whole race and Johnny's dad appearing and giving closure to Johnny. Of course, the last two things could have been made without Diego but the first two wouldn't be possible. Not to mention, i think that last fight is probably my favorite out all of Jojo's, so i wouldn't take it away by any means. (But for context, what i like about the fight is that is the only one where you actually feel like it's a fight against someone that can't stop time. For much as I love Dio vs Jotaro, it's a fight with very different mechanics when you realize both can move in stopped time. And while watching part 5, i was with hope that they would defeat diavolo with a clever way considering his abilities of erasing time but i was really disappointed that it was mostly a macguffing race to a win. As for part 6 final fight, it doesnt really feel like a fight, appropriate being, a complete victory by Pucci. So yeah, i think Johnny's vs Diego is the first time stop vs not time stop fight that is actually quite even and it's really fun.)
@Starpotion
@Starpotion Жыл бұрын
Johnny vs Diego feels like a secret boss fight to me IMO. It's just really fun seeing Johnny fight tooth and nail to take out Valentine, and then suddenly have to face a previous foe with a stand we already know is extremely powerful. Johnny being able to let loose and show off his ultimate ability for the entire final arc instead of it being limited to a couple uses during the final fight like Gappy or Giorno is also a treat.

I think what you forgot to mention was that Foo Fighters wasn’t actually shown in the end credits of the manga which ended up being adjusted in the anime. Well rounded analysis overall. I avoided the rest of the video to avoid spoilers tho. The only gripe I had with the heaven storyline was the lack of information regarding how DIO came up with the plan in the first place. You should check out Jojo Over Heaven (there’s an audio dub on youtube) It’s not written by Araki but it gives great characterization to Dio as he writes his thoughts during part 3 and comes up with the heaven plan while philosophizing on what heaven really is. I'm a strong believer that people dislike part 6 because part 7 was referred to as "the best". Not that it doesn't deserve the title, it does, but having one part being like any other part and then suddenly having the peak of Jojo's right after it made people long for that sweet horse racing, i guess.

Fact. The majority of people reading Part 6 just want to get it over with so they can get to Part 7 which is widely (and correctly) considered to be peak Jojo. It also doesn't help that a bunch of incels love to hate it cause they stand having a predominantly female cast (technically Jojolions cast is also predominantly female but Jojolion underutilizes almost every female character in it).

I also had some issues with JoJolion, very similar to yours, I guess, but I like the way Toruu was done. I like that we were on a long, mysterious journey and only in the last third we finally get to see who's behind everything, but at the same, once you realize his power, you now wish they could get away from its power (I know that's more of a testament to WoU than Toruu, but I liked him being a polar opposite to Jousuke and the way they forshadowed his true nature).

I think the problem with part 3 characters is that Araki uses this technique were he makes this spreadsheet and comes up with a lot of background information for the characters that will make up their personality. So in part 3 you can tell all the characters have their own personality and likes but it is not shown enough while in he other parts you get glimpses of these things. Like with kakyoin we get the scene from his childhood that he didn't have friends and all but that only stayed in the flashback and didn't really translate to his personality, he comes off as cool and charismatic and a bit more sensible than Jotaro. With avdol you can tell that he's intelligent and kind but that's about it. The only characters where this personality building shines through is Joseph because we already know him and Polnareff because he's supposed to be weird and funny. the next parts the personality is a bit more developed even if Araki doesn't explicitly show every detail, so he got better at show not tell.

I don’t agree with ur High Voltage opinion. Usually other parts would end with the main villain being defeated and then the part quickly ends afterwards. Meanwhile, in part 7 we still have another fight and it kinda helps to give more closure to the part and it’s also the only part where the “deus ex machina” stand (Tusk act 4) actually gets defeated.I think having those extra chapters after the Valentine fight just make the part so much more complete imo than if it were to just simply end with Johnny beating the race after defeating Valentine. Johnnys dad comes back with the milk, a great Lucy W and some terrifying moments with Tusk Act 4. The fight itself is really fun and fast paced and one of the best in the series and features the most creative uses of time stop. Its one of my favourite arcs in the series and I feel it’s less of a final boss, but more of an epilogue to SBR. Also Za Warudo obviously.

Absolutely agree on your point about Giorno, The main character doesn't need to develop over a series and completely shift or anything like that, he's consistent and his resolve only gets stronger. Fuck it, since I'm still going, agree on Jolyne being a favorite, she's honestly my number one favorite. Of the main universe anyways. She goes fucking hard, doesn't take shit, and is super super creative and adaptable during fights. Her and Johnny are battling it out for top spot.

Let me clarify: Tooru isn't a bad villain. He's just the weakest in the series to me and in jojo, a series with such great villains, that's still high praise. I'll admit that maybe I just don't understand part 8 but Tooru just felt kind of directionless and I didn't like the fact that he affected Yasuho and Rai's life but not Josuke. Would've preferred for him to maybe be the cause of Kira and Josefumi dying or something. Also I just would've preferred for him to be introduced earlier, I like the kind of twist villain approach Araki took but he kind of abandoned it. Regardless I can see why you like Tooru, I do too.

@@coolnuggetI definitely think Tooru needed more time in the oven. He appears from nowhere and doesn’t really get a lot of time to shine. Wonder of U is interesting (I love it’s designs and powers) but it’s whole arc contains some of the best but also worst of JoJo as a whole. Recently I was looking into Tooru thematically though and I find him far more interesting now. As a rock human he was by far the most alien one we had seen, motivated by greed Tooru isolated himself and used everyone around him for his own gain. Despite living for so long, Tooru was truly alone. This is completely juxtaposed by Gappy who despite only being in this world for such a short amount of time, and for most of that time is trying to find himself, he is surrounded by friends and family who genuinely care for him. Gappy has people to back him up and help him out while Tooru’s stand and personality make him more alone than anyone. If anyone tries to get genuinely close to him he will cause a calamity to occur. In his last moments he reaches out to Yashuo for help, in desperation he still believes he can get by using other people and yet he sees the hornet, a sign of his innocence and childhood and succumbs to the fate he so desperately tried to manipulate. Tooru is really interesting looking at him like this (and god Wonder of U is just one of my favorite stands), I just wish he got more time to bake in the oven and show himself off because god he’s a strange antagonist in a series where the antagonists tend to be one of the most memorable parts about it (I mean just look at Valentine before him).

Great analysis but honestly I beleieve that part 3 is underated even though it has its tiny imperfections that’s what makes jojo well jojo. Since every part in jojo does something well that makes us more attached to the series. I get that part 3 is seen as generic and boring compared to other parts but I love part 3 because of the awesome/funny fights. And I get people hate jotaro for being too much of a brickwall but he really isn't. Overall I think Part 3 deserves more love. But overall I believe every jojo part is great in their own way as no matter what part u like were all jojo fans at the end of the day and we all love the series

OMGG HI sorry for the incoming yap festival but as a vento aureo and stone ocean defender since day 1, THANK YOU!!!! i agree with you wholeheartedly!!! for vento aureo, people not liking giorno is pretty understandable (i don't think calm/serious mc is popular amongst jojo fans) but it doesn't mean that the story itself is bad. the whole plot of part 5 is so solid! as you said, no arc feels like a filler and the plot progresses in a very natural way. and for stone ocean, i understand not liking some of the fights (or even the ending tbh) but i've seen way too many people disliking jolyne which is crazy considering how she has one of the best character development alongside johnny just like the way you described her transforming from a whiny, apathetic girl, to someone who's absolutely selfless and brave. well, maybe for jolyne i'm biased bc she's literally my favorite jojo (and even my favorite animanga character) of all time lol. again, sorry for the long yap but i just wanna say i absolutely love your commentary!

Tbh I really like Red Hot Chili Peppers and it’s final fight, the design is okay, but the ability is super strong and the user was smart enough to plan out the fight and use the environment to his advantage, and although dangerous for it, it can use ALL the electricity from a power main line, which is absurdly strong

Part 3 would be so much better if like 5-10 fights were removed and the part was more streamlined. Like the dark blue moon fight, Sun fight, yellow temperance, Alessi, High pritess, wheel of fortune and the darby younger fights are boring to me and while they have some fun moments sprinkled throughout its not enough to be fully entertaining for a good 1/2 episodes. Another issue is that some of these fights have bad endings where jotaro randomly shows up and gets the final beatdown despite not being present at ALL during the fight (The justice and Alessi fights especially suffer because of this) and it makes everything that happened beforehand feel pointless. One last thing is that there should’ve been slightly less Jotaro /polnareff fight, they hog so many fights that Abdul, Joseph and kakyoin dont get any time to shine besides in a couple of fights.

Joseph's "your next line will be" shows how well he is reading his opponent. It's why the fight with, I forget his name, on the spikes where he is the one being read feels so intense. Part 2 is my favorite part but I feel like golden wind is peak Jojo. Great fights, great use of stands, and it's over the top such as when giorno and bucciarati first meet with the "this is the taste of a liar" Plus you don't need much information from the previous parts to watch it. Showing one of my friends chunks of part 5 is what convinced some of them to give the series a go. As for the hate it gets, I never really understood it. Giorno wasn't really our main character, bucciarati was. The entire story revolves around bucciarati with him and giorno wanting to overthrow the mafia. It's like Vaan and ff12 where he is our point of view in the story but the story isn't about him. The character growth is with the group as a whole. Collecting Trish, accepting giorno into the group, and eventually trusting him to the point that he becomes the new leader.

The things I like about part 7 is that Johnny wasn't designed as a noble or heroic character to begin with. In fact he started off as a rejected person of the family and then turned into an asshole which eventually got himself crippled. The story of other jojos are basically going from 0 to beyond becoming a stronger person while Johnny is the polar opposite of starting from the negative zone working his way to 0 becoming a normal person again.

Hierophant green has more utility and uses than most stands in part 3. That, and comparing him to Caeser feels strange. Kakyoin is kind, and has limited experience with other people so can come across as pretty strange. I think you undersold him tbh. When it comes to Iggy, I think the idea of him is that he’s dragged along against his will and doesn’t even want to take part in any conflict. It’s not his battle, and he’s only willing to see it through when he’s accosted by Pet Shop. Edit: Kira’s speech isn’t a reference to American psycho, at least not the film version. The manga came out years earlier, and the book didn’t begin with Patrick bateman’s speech

I would say part 8 jojolion is and part 7 is by far the peak of araki right now as it strive for the main core of what jjba is. The celebration of humanity to be able to fight against the current of faith with nothing but the indomitable human spirit. Not that the previous part didnt do that as we saw each jojo fought from just an unbeatable living creature to concept like time. Here we saw 2 adjacent part fighting respectively miracles and calamity with part 8 not just the jojo and his gang fighting it but the entire higashikata family battling against the world to break a curse preceeded from the past to battling against a concept of calamity itself. The thing that battle calamity is something that does not exist come from an entity that should not be on his world in the first place as if Gappy is a force, entering the Higashikata family to finally reward them for their struggles and something about it is just perfect to me. Sure the villian has the depth of a kiddie pool but i feel like it is more or less to pull our attention to the core value of what jjba is more.
