I’m running 0.4.3 and will say the outdoor mode sounds overall better. But I’m returning my Uboom l. I had recently acquired the Bose Flex and with all this Oluv Uboom l hype I just had to get one for $60 and compare. I had high hopes and really wanted a $60 speaker to sound as good or better than a $119 one, but in no universe can I say it sounds anywhere as good as the Bose Flex. I’ve never liked Bose either and still can’t believe how blown away I am with an Bose product. Always found their sound dull with muted vocals. But this Flex has the clearest vocals I’ve ever heard. For a small mono speaker this thing is nearly as clear and impressive as my Paradigm towers.

Good choice. It’s way better than the Uboom l. I have both and I’m returning the Uboom l. I even updated my firmware to the highly touted Oluv 4.3 and it sounds boxy and musically inaccurate. Vocals are lifeless. The Bose is quite amazing, especially with the vocals. They sound so real. My one advice is try playing the Flex on its back. I find it sounds much better in that position due to the position IQ that adjusts the EQ. When in upright position I find the drums get muted.

@@DannyPops Aw c'mon Danny. You should know by now that the first thing to do with any new BT speaker would be to ensure that it's running the latest firmware :-). Seriously, in your video the Earfun UBoom L sounded a little dull in your video compared to the Bose Flex and the JBL Flip 6, so I'm not surprised that you preferred those two over it. I'm wondering what changes a firmware update to the UBoom L will bring. I've been considering its purchase to primarily use a "reference" BT speaker (if indeed it has a neutral sound). I already have the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 (thanks to reviews by yourself and others on KZbin) and the Mifa Wildbox, both of which sound great. The UBoom L will fit nicely between the two in terms of size.

Negative. I did the highly touted 0.4.3 firmware which is Oluv’s signature EQ. It still sounds lifeless compared to the Bose Flex. I’ve been comparing for days going back and forth with every genre I can find and the Bose always sounds clearer and cleaner. Especially the vocals, but really everything. Only thing I found that sounded slightly better on the Uboom l was the Black Crowes. I think it has to do with the congested mids in their music. I will say at times the Uboom does sound a little fuller due to its upper bass/mids not lowered like on the Bose, but I can’t get over the Uboom’s hollow and boxy sound that very often comes through sounding muffled. I’d rather have less mids/upper bass for more lower bass and crisper highs with accurate sounding vocals and drums. I was a percussionist back in the day and I cringe when I hear muffled inaccurate drums. One thing to note, the Flex does sound brighter (and better imo) when place on its back or vertical vs standing upright. Bose adjusts the EQ based on its position. Somehow the speaker knows its position and there is a noticeable difference between the sound.
@wilcurran3377
@wilcurran3377 11 ай бұрын
I totally agree with your ranking and thoughts on the sound of each speaker, I definitely don't with your style critique and I know that's absolutely subjective. In my opinion the Uboom strikes a good balance between being fun, but not so adolescent that it feels like a 14yr olds bedroom when placed next to your TV, it's also a functional shape. The Bose on the other hand looks like a cheap plastic toy, which is disappointing for a slightly more "premium" brand. Man that Marshall sounded like it had a bowl over it, what a disappointment!

Due to all this hype I just had to get the Uboom l to compare to my Bose Flex. It came with firmware 0.5.0. It didn’t sound anywhere near as nice as my Flex. So I did what the Reddit community recommended and I upgraded (or rather downgraded) to Oluv’s 4.3. It sounded better, but still no where near the quality of the Flex. Keep in mind I listen to my Flex on its back since I find it sounds much better that way. I hear much clearer vocals, more accurate drum beats and cymbals, and more nuance with the Flex over the Uboom. The Uboom sounds boxy to me. I don’t know what people are hearing. My audio experience is with a large Paradigm surround sound speaker system matched with a Denon receiver. That system is a true musical representation. The Bose Flex (on its back) sounds pretty darn close in its accuracy where a snare drum, hi-hat, crash cymbal, guitar, piano all sound real…and with nice separation. Im sorry, the Uboom did not sound nice. Is it serviceable at $60…sure. But for the current Flex price of $119 I’d make that stretch. Plus I find the Bluetooth works much better if using multiple devices. The Flex can multi pair and you can press the Bluetooth button to cycle through to what source you want. It is actually pretty slick.

Thanks for the review. I had the earfun now for 3 months - excellent sound quality, especially after the firmware update. But overall I wouldn't recommend it for several reasons - no app, firmware update possible only on pc, without video mode latency is terrible, with video mode much better but accompanied with crackling noise, slow charging, doesn't connect well with macbook (need to pair and unpair every time) and sometimes doesn't connect at first try with my phone. So yes, better go with bose or jbl if you don't want to deal with these annoying issues unless all you care about is sound quality.

I also updated the firmware to Oluv’s 0.4.3 and it still sounds dull and inaccurate to me. I don’t understand the hype. Vocals sound underwater. Snare drum sounds like a Tom drum. Cymbals sound like a gong. Hi-hats sound like a thunk instead of a psst. No crisp sound. Everything sounds flat and dull. Whenever I switched back over to the Flex I instantly felt alive. I don’t even think it is an EQ thing. I think this Chinese brand Earfun uses inferior materials and DSP technology. @@billdepalma161 But watts don't really indicate that (can definitely serve as an estimate of the power), its depending mostly on efficiency of the drivers, size and frequency response here Earfun is louder than Flip 6 with more bass even tho it has 24w vs 30w...

Sorry Danny! You lost in this review. I've all emberton 2, flex, JBL 6, tribit mega plus, tribit micro 2 etc.... Except emberton, all are down and far away to earfun uboom l. . From the low audio to high, earfun rocks with good clarity and balanced bass treble and mid. You are biased.

Being neutral is only good if the speaker is quality. I’ve owned audiophile neutral speakers. Large Paradigm towers, center, rears, and 10” powered sub with a Marantz and later a Denon receiver. Always kept settings at 0 and sounded amazing. The best audio system I’ve ever owned. I got a Bose Flex and also this Earfun thing and have been comparing back and forth for days. In no universe is the Uboom l better than the Flex in audio quality. I’ve updated to Oluv’s 0.4.3 and vocals often sound hollow and muffled, snare drum sounds like a tom drum. Hi-hats sound like a thunk instead of a psst. I’ve played drums and that is not how they are supposed to sound. The overly neutral setting on such a small (and let’s be honest, Chinese made speaker) has all the instruments and frequencies bleeding into each other. Sure you hear a little more mids, particularly mid bass, but nothing sounds clear and musically accurate or pleasing. Earfun is not fun to my ear.

Being neutral, only counts when that is the person's preference. Harman shows most prefer a slope down from 100hz to 20khz, and prefer a bump below 100hz to taste depending on track. This also changes by volume, as we don't hear everything the same at all volumes, hence the equal loudness curve applied by tons of audio gear. This is why most powered speakers go for a "bass boost" curve. It IS the preferred sound for MOST people, and that's how you make money.

I'm sure someone with reference studio speakers could also attest to this since they aren't for beauty but accuracy and clarity.

@@DannyPops Yeah, the typical consumer doesn't like a reference sound. They tend ro like what we call a smile eq curve (emphasized bass and often an equally emphasized high end, though some are just bass-heads). I guess for audio people (mixers, recording engineers, mastering engineers, etc) accuracy IS beauty. It's just what we always listen to and strive for

@@DannyPops Which model? I know there are specific models that engineers love, but I could never mix on them. I couldn't tell what was going on with them, so I'm not a fan either. Importantly, the room you are listening in and the placement within that room has a HUGE effect on the way the speakers sound. Monitoring is extremely tricky.
@bencherian

Yes studio monitoring headphones, speakers sound too analytical or boring or even bring poorly mastered songs sound worse. Most of the songs that we usually hear especially new gen are very poorly mastered. It's just that consumer speakers hides it with so called "colouring the sound signature". Oluv if sound engineering guy obviously will give emphasize to details and analytics

and what i had learned - NEVER TRUST ANY YOTUBE REVIEW... i bought several audio products because of good reviews... especially the "moondrop aria in ear monitors".... jesus christ that thing was just pure shit... muddy bass boring everything muddy... no definition no detail.... speakers can sound warmth and detailed, but they where just shit and all the people on the interenet where like "wow these are so good bla bla bla"... the same with minirig 3... it just sounded akward with alot of genres and i could not eq it... dont - trust - internet - reviews.... make shure you can send the speakers back if you want to buy speakers because the fact that you dont like them is high because you - cant - trust - online - reviews :( (and maybe because everyone has different ears)

Take as an example a Alan Ross, soundguys or whathifi wich check each speaker in the analytical way or rtings using especial rooms for test meassures.The Earfun uboom was not scored as high as was with Oluv with Alan and was low scored by rtings wich have equipmment for that.
