@@5calambres the red hood backstory, the idea that there was this crime spree scam using innocent people kidnapped and compelled to do it while wearing the red hood outfit: this lore must exist outside a closed plot loop of the killing joke, because it's what is referenced by Jason Todd when he takes the name Red Hood, an ironic reference to the injustice which transformed him, while backhandedly referencing the one who killed him. Also it's pretty much accepted that that plot of The Killing joke, or at least plot point touchstones, are Canon. Just not the implied ambiguous ending or the total mental destruction of Gordon.

The line “What kind of coward would do something that cold-blooded? Someone who hides behind a mask. Someone who is envious of those more fortunate than themselves, yet they’re too scared to show their own face.”, hits so hard. The irony in Thomas Wayne’s statement is striking, especially when considering the future of Bruce Wayne as Batman. Bruce, much like the Joker, becomes a figure who hides behind a mask, driven by a sense of loss and a desire for justice. However, unlike the Joker, Bruce uses his masked persona to protect rather than to harm, but there’s still that underlying theme of envy-envy of those who can live normal, peaceful lives without the burden of a dual identity. The duality between the Joker and Batman, both using masks (literal or metaphorical) to navigate their pain and sense of purpose. I like to believe Thomas Wayne’s words unintentionally foreshadow his son’s path, highlighting the blurred line between heroism and villainy, and how society can mold both in different directions.

Something subtle that points to Arthur being an unreliable narrator is the shooting on the subway. Instead of it being a continuity mistake that his five shot S&W revolver shoots at least twice that many times without reloading, it is another clue that "his" world is disconnected from the "normal" world. It's not like his gun is like the guns in the old Westerns that "shot all day". Arthur just remembers stuff and even perceives stuff "wrong".

A great film about mental illness. The age makes sense. In the original 90s film, the age between Keaton and Nicholson. And the origin story was that Bruce's dad was shot by Joker, and Bruce was just a kid. In this, the killer was inspired by the Joker and not the Joker himself.

I think this was the first time two different actors (Ledger and Phoenix) played the same character and won the Academy Award for Best Actor. That said, IMHO Mark Hamill is the very best Joker as he has been voicing him in one iteration or another since 1992. Hell, he did The Joker in 2019 in "Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?" so he's been at it for nearly 30 years!!!!

When the most criminally insane character in DC tells the story: he's actually quite convincing. This is his version of events on how he became like that. Everything is twisted and doesn't make sense. One detail that a lot of people overlook is the fact that the guy that kills the Waynes has the same mask that he's being seeing all along and later gets on the subway, while he's being chased. He tosses it of course, but this guy also says the same line that Joker used to kill the TV host minutes ago. You should watch the animated movie "Flashpoint Paradox" based on the "Flashpoint" comicbook event

I don't care for the superhero genre, but I loved this film. The Joker didn't set out to be a super-villain. He didn't set out to be a symbol of a movement. He was a sick man in a sick society and everything happened to him. Frankly, I was sad to hear of a sequel. I fear he will become just another comic book super-villain, to get lost in the clutter of comic book movies. I think this is a far superior character study and I hate to see it dumbed down to another action film.

There is no reason to believe that Arthur's neighbor is dead or hurt in any way. When she came into the room, she said, "I think you're in the wrong apartment..." Nothing indicates that he did anything more than sit on her couch, gesture towards her and leave. He also didn't look roughed up when he was walking away from the scene. She knew he lived in the building, and he didn't do anything to threaten anyone but himself in that scene. Of course, you could always be right, given the movie we're discussing, but I really don't see any indication of that. Well done to you both on this one. I don’t think the neighbour is dead. Arthur wasn’t a psychopath who simply killed for the sake of killing. He was more like a self-styled vigilante: He murdered only people he considered bad or evil, and he clearly didn’t feel the neighbour had done him wrong in any way. I think he just left her apartment after being asked to. Maybe she called the cops, maybe she didn’t, but they probably had more more urgent matters given the simmering ”clown revolution” in the streets.

I absolutely love and adore this film. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker's can't even be compared since they are different versions and I love both for varying reasons. The only part I hated about this specific Joker film was the beginning scene when he had his sign stolen and was getting beaten up. The kids annoyed the ever-loving heck out of me, literally saying everything they were doing. "we got the sign, go, go, go, let's go, come on, come on, let's go, come on, take his sign, beat him up, harder, harder, beat him up, take his stuff, kick him, kick him." I didn't need the repeated narration over the entirety of the scene for what we were already watching them do. That is my only nitpick that took me out of the film. It felt like they were excited they got a role in the film, so they wanted as many lines in it as they possibly could squeeze in. If they varied what they said more, it would have been perfectly fine, but they sounded like a broken record stuck on repeat mode until the scene ended.

There's a theory that none of what we say happened. It's all delusions made up in Arthur's mind while he is locked away in Arkham Asylum. The clown on the wall as he's banging his head on the door window is the only time shown on any clock seen on screen. He could be remembering events but since he also makes up a relationship with his neighbor than his recollections couldn6be trusted as happening either. It's a layer of story that makes the last scene make a bit more sense with the change in visual tonality and the kind of looney tunes vibe as he walks/runs through the hallway.

You can also see it as the original DC story of Batman is told from the perspective of Wayne's Gotham. Bruce probably never even saw Arthur's side of the city before he became Batman, but he knows that's where his parent's killer came from, and he goes on protecting *his* city from the criminals of Arthur's Gotham. If we assume that Arthur becoming Joker is just the beginning, from his POV, is Batman or Bruce Wayne any better than Thomas ever was? Wouldn't he oppose Batman for the same reasons that parts of the city at this point is rising up and causing mayhem? In this Joker's mind he's probably fighting for a good cause, opposing injustice and making a statement for the unheard and unseen. Classic Joker knows he's the bad guy, but a Joker that think he's the good guy sounds even scarier. Then he becomes an idealist that uses any means to fight evil. That's what is usually called a terrorist by the enemy.

About Sophie's final destiny, Lawrence Sher, Joker cinematographer, said in an interview: "We wanted to make the interpretation of the real versus what’s not real, a part of the viewer’s experience. For instance, his relationship to Sophie is a fantasy to him. Some people have asked me, ‘Was she killed?’ [Director Todd Phillips] makes it clear she wasn’t killed. Arthur is killing people who’ve wronged him in a certain way, and Sophie never wronged him"

The script has some interesting details: "This story takes place in its own universe. It has no connection to any of the DC films that have come before it. We see it as a classic Warner Bros. movie. Gritty, intimate and oddly funny, the characters live in the real world and the stakes are personal. Although it is never mentioned in the film, this story takes place in the past. Let's call it 1981." So, a sequel may be in the works, but don't expect it to tie into any of the other DC movies.

It was only confirmed after feminist groups actually protested the movie. It was meant to imply since he wasn't questioned then it means it was no victim alive to file a report. I believe that is one of the scenes they had to redo after focus groups. So they left it as ambiguous but yeah.

i love the subtle detail of the use of stairs in this film. at the beginning, we witness Arthur climb UP many stairs, and slowly through the course of the movie, the director decides to only show Arthur descending those same stairs, as if to showcase his mental state -- UP when trying to be an upright, moral citizen.. DOWN when he is spiraling into chaos. and in the final act Arthur is literally dancing down them. super clever.

@@Bentzel75 its fine to have empathy for broken people but those who don't change and continue to hurt others have only themselves to blame. I come from a severely abusive backround and was raised by two mentally ill Narcissistic sociopaths for parents. They had plenty of time to change and get the help that they needed but they chose to let whatever happened to them in their past justify their abuse and evil acts and continued to be this way for decades. My point is you can either get yourself the help you need continue down a path of self destruction.
