BTW, uncontrolled laughter is a real neurological condition - it was not something that was made up for the film. It is very uncommon, but to my understanding, it is similar to Tourettes. (I also could be totally incorrect.) I have to see a neurologist annually, for some head injuries as a teen playing sports, and I have been asked all of these questions, had to go through many of the 100+ questionnaires, looked at, brain-scans, etc. Joker film truly hit home with me, especially regarding the weight loss of many of the anti-psychotics, and many other anti-depressants. The medications are some of the harshest medications on the body. Thankfully, I have had no problems past my teen years, but visiting the doctor's office or going into a hospital and seeing patients with severe neurological conditions is one of the most depressing things anyone can witness. Joker 10/10

“I just hope my death makes more cents [sense] than my life” During the interview with Murray, Joker saw this sentence in his journal. I think this was his last breaking point. Initially, his "joke" was supposed to be his suicide, but after reading the quote he realised that he doesn't want his death to be the way he felt about his life - senseless. That results in his manifesto and the killing of Murray. In my opinion, Joker would have just killed himself in the studio if he hadn't seen that sentence again. So I think that's one of the most important moments in the film.

I was recently talking to a friend of mine after we have left the cinema watching the movie, how comic book movies never get nominated for an Oscar. He was throwing in that Heath Ledger has won one after his performance in the Dark Knight. Then we both realised that he has won it after his death went public. We linked and interpreted the sentence Joker carried around in his diary as an subtle critic towards the Oscar ceremony, that actors starring in these kind of movies only will get noticed if they die, attaching a high price to their performance getting the fame they deserve.

I also like how the mis spelling of sense to cents plays on the idea that Arthur's life is worthless and isn't worth cents. He feels that his death, especially a high profile suicide on TV would get people talking about the problems in Gotham and would therefore be worth more than living.

The whole Thomas Wayne affair thing is super obvious, “You have a pretty smile” is a pretty tame compliment, so it stands to reason that he did actually write that on the photo, and Penny birthed an entire lifetime of fantasy from that one instance, kind of like how Arthur has a short conversation with Sophie and creates his own fantasy relationship from that. Also Penny’s character seems super inspired by Mrs. Goldfarb from Requiem for a Dream and I love it~

The only reason I don't like the "it was ALL in his head" theory is that they specifically highlight what was a delusion. When they do the Fight Club reveal that Sophie was never really there in those scenes; it draws a line that implies... "we're going to tell you what scenes didn't really happen the way we showed you the first time." Why would his fantasy include an elaborate Inception-style delusion within a delusion.

The film was brilliant! And though I can see how many might interpret the final scene as saying that the whole rest of the film was a fantasy I personally don't think it was. I think it's much later in his life as he looks older in the final scene, and also we know Joker was constantly in and out of Arkham Asylum so I feel it is playing into that narrative. What ever the actual answer is the performances and film were amazing with some beautiful cinematography throughout. For sure one of my favourite joker stories that I've seen.

I thought it looked like a Shotokan Kata myself. (I used to take Shotokan). The katas are designed for getting down the movements and learning defensive routines so that during a fight you can act without having to consciously analyze every situation. The movements just flow. And yes, there is something very soothing about it. So I think the movements look like a variety of things...expressive dance (which is sometimes used as a therapy practice for people with PTSD) and martial arts. Interesting...a blend of rituals that calm and also protect against violence.

This movie hit me to my core,I have a decent amount of anxiety and my god did this movie push it to the edge. My first viewing of the film had me heading to the bathroom to calm myself down,I came back and finish the film which was so worth it. Joaquin Phoenix is absolutely perfect in this role as the joker,I couldn't have been more pleased with how well he transformed into the joker. I've seen it twice already and I plan on seeing it at least two more times. 10/10 a TRUE masterpiece.

I have a theory.when arthur is laughing to himself at the end and then theres a scene where bruce is standing over his dead parents.maybe arthur has already fought batman and discovered he’s bruce wayne and the reason he’s laughing to himself is cause he knows he’s actions (the riots) caused the death of he’s parents therefore he’s responsible for creating batman, and thats why he’s laughing.

I have Aspergers syndrome and when the world overwhelms me I turn off all gadgets and hide in a darkened room until I am ready to face things once more. Beyond all else, the Joker is a brilliantly observed piece of writing and cinema that highlights the tragedy of mental illness.
