This Ancient Rome Live Seminar is an examination of Roman humor, pranks, and jokes, in light of April Fool's Day. Sure, the Romans had slaves and gladiator arenas, but they enjoyed a good laugh just as much as we do. It's just important to understand their context and setting when you read the ancient comedies (Terence, Plautus- 2C BCE), satires of Horace and Iuvenal, epigrams of Martial, writings of orators Cicero and Quintilian, and examine the Philogelos, joke book (2C CE) and witty sayings of the emperors, from Augustus to Elagabalus! Explore the dirty, gritty side of Pompeii, with graffiti lining the walls, and step back 2000 years to examine jokes from the Roman perspective!
