One has to realize, most theme parks are designed to make money. Dolly created this place, not to make herself money, but to create jobs for the people in the area and draw tourists to support the local small businesses. It is a good healthy family environment, excellent food and most importantly supports the community. I wish you could have met her while you were there.

My understanding is that she basically bought into an existing park, rebranded it etc. However same sentiment in that she wanted to help the community that she grew up in. She didn't build it from scratch per se. She rescued it and made it bigger and better

There were rumors for a long time that she was going to build a second Dollywood in my home area of southeastern Kentucky. She even bought a huge track of land there. But unfortunately, that never panned out. :( It would have brought a lot of jobs to a very poor area. I have no doubt that was her plan, if the rumors were true of course.

Dolly Parton is one celebrity who grew up terribly poor and made it to the top, but instead of living in a Golden Mansion, she gives back to fans by opening Dollywood. She's the sweetest woman on the planet. I really don't think she's ever had an enemy. I'm so glad you're visiting here and filming it. It doesn't look like what I expected, it looks even better. @@moogogaipan you are wrong. She has spoken before about her desire to help improve the lives of the folk in the area that she grew up in, and Dollywood was one of the first ventures she undertook to do that. The money she makes from the theme park goes into the Imagination Library, the ability of the park to continue to offer jobs to the community, to charities that help folk in the area, and various other ventures to grow the economy of the TN Appalachian area. Dolly was born and raised there and she has taken care of the people in that region by providing employment through her theme park, giving school supplies to children when they start school and far beyond Tennessee through her Imagination Library promoting literacy and encouraging kids to love reading. She is an amazing human being and I’m proud to say that my family comes from the same region. To see someone who came from the humble beginnings of an Appalachian community give back so generously isn’t a surprise. The south gets a bad wrap and is often the butt of jokes but the generosity of the people in that region is a real thing and Dolly is a walking, talking testament to that. She gives me hope for humanity. Thank you for shining a positive light on the food and culture of the south, they are truly one and the same.

Dolly saved that theme park and the entire county several decades ago. It was going bankrupt and there was no employment. She bought it, employed her family and every person in the county who needed work. It saved the county and now it employs thousands in the hotels and restaurants as well as the theme park. You can spend an entire day just seeing all the music shows, which we've done. She invites local food trucks to come and sell their food in her Park and they keep their profit. Senior citizens in the area can still get employment there whenever they need it. Look at pictures of Pigeon Forge from the 1970s and now.

Walt also did great things for the theme park employees, like food at the cast member cafeterias was sold for cost (that ended quickly after he was gone). He loved interacting with the guests and theme park employees. He did not like interacting with executives as much. You're probably thinking about the animators when they tried to unionize. Yes, Walt held a grudge, and that situation definitely sucked. No one is perfect, but to say he never did any good or none of his workers liked him is not true at all. Now that reports are in that Carl, her husband, health might be in decline, she probably won't be in the area quite as often, as Carl tends to be her priority. But much of the time Dolly is here you won't see her, unless it's a special/scheduled event at Dollywood, or at one of her other businesses ventures. It had a different name before Silver Dollar City and operated for 6 years before the first name change when Herschend bought the park in 1976. One thing I'll always remember about me and my partner's trip to TN is that, while we were riding around the free trolley in Pigeon Forge (we needed a break), we heard the locals talking about Dolly. They didn't talk about her like she was a celebrity, but like an old, dear friend. Literally: "Think she'll come down this weekend?" "Not if it's raining. Y'all know she don't come down if it's raining." "Bless her heart!" and so on. Not a bad word about her. This video just reinforced that if we ever get to go to TN again, I'm making going to Dollywood a priority.

It’s such a wholesome and cute comment section, I love it ❤

Well over %80 of the people from the region have deep Irish roots. I recently found out that all my great-great grandparents were Irish settlers, and that's not uncommon here. You may have more of a link to the region than you realize.

Living in "the south" I've never been to Dollywood but my Mother and other family go a couple times per year. My ancestry DNA was taken recently and I found out I'm about 80% Irish and Scottish so some of the settlers hit this area! All my life I have craved bread and potatoes, stews, chilis and when all my life growing up I'd see pics of things like the green cliffs of Moher and I'd sigh with nostalgia. I visited England in 1997 and never was a big beer drinker but I asked the bartender to give me whatever and he served me the best beer I'd ever tasted. When I returned home it was the only thing I would drink...and it was Killian's Irish Red! So, a lady once told me, "It's in the bones" and now I know what that means. I've kinda been thinking it might be nice to visit before I'm in a wheelchair and can't make the trip. Cheers from the south!

My dad was from County Cork and my mother’s parents were from Ireland and moved to New York in the mid 1920’s. I’m afraid to do an Ancestry DNA because if it showed anything but 100% Irish my parents would be rolling in their graves, especially my dad. He was a proud Irish man and a proud American.

I'm from a neighboring county in East TN, and I've been going to Dollywood since I was 6 yrs old (Im 45 yrs old now, so yeah, Ive spent some time at the park lol) and I definitely encourage y'all to come up and visit Dollywood, but also see everything here in East TN. Dollywood is just one park and one of Dolly's business ventures here, theres even more, including a decent sized water park called Splash Country. Not to mention all the other shopping places and theaters and restaurants and etc that are here. This is a very family oriented area, including the surrounding counties, and theres literally something for just about everybody here, especially if you love nature and the outdoors. My favorite, of course, is The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and South Central Appalachia, as a whole. Im from Blount County, 40 mins away from Dollywood, and these hills are my home, and Im very proud of them.

Outstanding reaction and glad you had a great time. One reason Dollywood is outstanding is because it’s still operated by her and not some board of directors that can’t relate to average people and what gives them joy. Dolly has her 😊name on the sign and she is proud of what she has created. You never really know the true nature of a celebrity but the excellence of Dollywood gives a snapshot of the character of the woman.

Sometimes it's the little cultural differences that are the most surprising. The idea at 6:10 that you'd never even heard of apple butter when it's so ubiquitous around here is mind-boggling, everybody has it on hand, almost whether they want to or not. (If anybody's curious, it's a spread made from cooking down apples until they caramelize to a deep brown and reduce into a thick spreadable paste... we call it a butter, but it's closer to a jam in practice, though much smoother.)

I love apple butter and my grade school actually restored an old one room school house and moved it to their property and every year since they host “New Era” days where they bring in civil war rein actors, do old dances, sell trinkets, and tours of the one room school. All while serving old times food, including making FRESH apple butter out front of the school!!!

We in this area that have lived and worked are so very proud of Dolly and her park. She has created so many jobs and has been so innovative in finding ways to give back to the community. Books could be written and have been written about her but nothing really describes the amount of pride we feel towards her. In this area we all feel like she is a part of our family because most of us have someone that has so.e of the same attributes as she does. I'm so happy you enjoyed your time in my neck of the woods so to speak. I enjoy your channel so much.

Kettle corn is extremely reminiscent of another American classic snack that was once very common nationwide: Cracker Jacks! The perfect treat to have while watching a baseball game.

They go to a lot of awesome places, to eat, events, experiencing other cultural traditions. This is honestly the most joyful I’ve ever seen them. They were really enjoying themselves

Their trip to the Houston rodeo last year was pretty close in terms of joy levels. Same vibe. I want to go to both of these places.

When I was younger my mom took us to Dollywood - in the parking lot someone stopped us and said "Hey we have extra discount coupons, would you like one?" and we got in for a discount! People really are so sweet at Dollywood.

Man, even as a kid, that graciousness became a core memory. Dolly Parton spreading kindness and helping it grow in so many different ways. I have so much respect for her now.

Oh, wow! That happened to me at Colonial Williamsburg! The family in front of us had extra discount coupons and asked if we wanted them!! They heard my Scots accent and said, "You're British! Glad we're all friends again" and they ran for the bus. So kind! I loved my time spent in the South. 🎉❤🎉

Some years back, I read that after she made the deal with Whitney's people for "I Will Always Love You" Dolly used the money to improve the park & for her Libray Program. Shes a true philanthropist.

Oh my you experiencing DOLLYWOOD was so fun. My first trip was amazing. Best memories were the Dolly museum And learning more about her life and her charitable endeavors Also at one of the restaurants an older employee offering me beans she had in a well used crock pot- they were so good - pretty sure she made them at home and brought them with her to work. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and I never heard anyone swearing- which was such a delight - coming from California. All around were families having a great time. One of my best memories.

Between the cute interaction with the older lady, the amazing food and that ad break ahahhahhaha. While I'm not really a fan of Dolly's music, she is an incredible human and I wish there were more out here like her. The book donations and opening a place like Dollywood to increase tourism and jobs in the place she's from is wonderful.
