When my friend from England visited me in Georgia last summer, he was absolutely terrified to step off my patio because of what he’d heard about copperheads being so numerous here. Meanwhile, I’m walking the dog around the yard at night with only sandals on and a flashlight. I gave him the same advice to look at his feet while walking. I didn’t have the heart to tell him they are frequently on cement patios, enclosed garages and door jambs too. The poor man would have never left the house.

See in KY we have way more water moccasin’s (or cotton mouths) and those f-ers so so much more aggressive. And better at hiding it’s terrifying even if you’re used to it. The good news is their venom is not as potent as the copperhead.

When my wife and I moved into our house there was somehow a tiny little rat snake that was just inside the front door (generally love them in my area to help with rodents, but I digress). She panicked and tried to stomp on it--and it escaped into an air vent. She wanted to burn the place down, heh. Now we have a whole army of rat snakes in our neighborhood thanks to immediately saving that tiny snake's ass in the duct work we have in our crawlspace. I will admit that I'm not as much of a fan of the massive rat snakes, but they're mostly harmless so I let other braver folks deal with them. (Yes I know that there was already going to be an army of rat snakes with or without trying to save the dude in the ductwork. I just didn't want to deal with the smell.)

By the way, catfish love chicken liver. I've had nights pulling up 3-4 bullheads, 4-5 channel cats and a couple eels an hour using chicken liver. Always wondered why noodlers don't put a little chicken liver in their hand. The stench is so strong, it comes in its own liquid so it gets in the water quick, and you can buy enough to line fish for 3 hours for $1.49.

Obscure is right! American here and I'd never even heard of noodling until it was on a t.v. show a few years ago on Animal Planet. I wrote a paper on it for school and learned of another family well-known for hosting noodling tours. The dad had lost several fingers due to the snapping turtles taking them off! So, you can't downplay encountering a turtle instead of a catfish in one of those holes, lol. That family also fished with bare hands, no gloves, so they're a whole 'nother level of crazy! Ollie just made a memory he'll surely be sharing with his grand kids someday, "Did I ever tell you about the time I caught a 50 lb. catfish in America with my bare hands? Me and Uncle Josh were in a lake and I had to find food for us..." 😆

I've hand grabbed catfish for 40 years. I've also managed catfish ponds for the major producers in the Mississippi Delta. The care we give and the management practices we use are designed to produce the best quality product. I used to give away what I caught wild to people who needed the food and would eat what we raised on the farm. Be sure to look for the "Raised in the USA" label. If it doesn't have that you're buying the Vietnamese crap.

i eat catfish a lot and its actually the opposite. wild catfish eat junk and love muddy water. farm raised catfish live in clean water with controlled food- much better taste and texture. you can really taste a difference. and really large wild cats taste plain nasty!

I've been watching Jolly for years. However this is probably my favorite video they have done. Simply because of how blind they went into this and how out of their element they are. I only learned about noodling about 6 months ago and my dad's family has been fishing for catfish since they were young. Even to me, this is absolutely insane. I've seen many famous first-timers do it. It's clearly such a rush. I'm not a daredevil. However, I greatly respect all of the generations of family growing up doing this. It definitely requires such a hard work ethic. As well as the strong family both this instills for the love of it and living off the land. It's quite admirable to see in this day and age. Props to Josh and Ollie for giving it a go. An experience they will never forget.

My husband's uncle nearly drowned while noodling. His foot got caught in some rocks & he couldn't surface. He wasn't using oxygen because it was in Oklahoma in the Illinois River & it's not deep enough to use equipment like that. No wetsuits either. Just swim trunks. Every once in awhile someone does drown noodling from one reason or another.

As a boy in South Carolina, catfish was a staple you could catch them by hand in the muddy banks of Lake Murray easily (not as big as Ollie's though!) and my grandmother had 5 grandsons, and she took us catfishing weekly. It was a part of our diet; they were that easy to catch.
