We build race car bodies from aluminum. A trick you might try is to attach a 6" pvc rigid pipe to the side of a table or bench. Like the bench there next to the welder. You can use it to roll a slight curve in the sheet of aluminum. Just grab sides and push against the pipe. A little practice and it becomes easy. Very cool to see one of these hulls built. One day I at least wanna ride in one!

Fan from the Cleeter crew here, (In my defense I've thought jet sprint racing was cool way before I knew about Cleetus, it's one of the main reasons I bought the game The Crew 2 back when it launched) As a farm boy I love all the hand fabrication techniques and I'm absolutely taking notes, but as an engineering student, I'd freaking love to try to Cad model like your next boat if you'd have any interest in that sort of thing... I've done a decent amount of bent and curved and rolled sheet metals parts that have been laser cut and welded together so I have a bit of experience... would be super neat to have something you could iterate on in the computer and then have laser cut (which really is not expensive in most places, even on my student budget...) and weld together... Maybe even get someplace like sendcutsend to sponsor the builds... anything to get Cleeter in his own boat faster ;) If you have an idea of dimensions/angles/etc for the next build you'd share with me I'd love to take a swing at it
@JollyRoger9072 жыл бұрын
Love the enthusiasm and I think you’ll do great things. I am sorry though, I don’t really share dimensions of my race hulls. I can say: start with a 60” x 144” sheet for bottom plate and put a 20* - 24* deadrise in the delta and you’ll be in the ballpark
@killorkubed2 жыл бұрын
@@JollyRoger907 I absolutely understand not sharing your critical dimensions out, and I may take a swing at it just based on that and what you have in your videos, but I'd probably only finish the model out if it would benefit you (like I said I'd love for you to be able to just laser cut the pieces and put it together and then be able to iterate from boat to boat a lot more accurately) sort of thing that everyone is doing with the mini-jet boats...

First, I am not a metal worker in any way, shape, or form, can't even spot weld. So, this is new to me. I have been building wood and composite boats for 40 years though. When you first laid that deck panel on top, I saw those gaps at the front, and thought no way that was going to work. I started thinking about how I would have cut the panel differently from the materials to whichI am accustomed , but then you pulled it off beautifully! You're teaching an old dog new tricks! :) And yes, it does look fast!

Geometry meets Origami... This is where science and art meld. I'm obsessed with knowledge and learning everything applicable to the subject. ... If you look at the cowl from driver perspective... there's 3 arcs that need to connect with flat sheet. The issue is the bow comes to a point. >> the cowl piece is a cone shape that ends with 0" radius. ... I'm wondering why you don't use wood bucks to pre shape panels like this. Especially at the bow.
@JollyRoger9072 жыл бұрын
My boat building mentor of 25 years experience taught you don’t ever want to force plate. It will take its own natural curves and those curves need to be fair. So unless you 100% perfect with the buck concept you’d be trying to force a shape that may or may not be the same as the opening you’re trying to fit it to. Besides, I think it’s faster and just as accurate to throw a piece of plate on there, get the shape you want, mark it accurately, cut it accurately and you’re golden! 👍🤷🏻♂️

I see knowledge and the ability to constantly improve my crafts as the most important tool in the box. .. Your mentor is correct.. and you went ahead and clamped the bow to pinch it. Forced it into place, but not shape. ... the only "issue" is that it's now pre-stressed. Not a big deal in your application, mostly in auto body repair. ( something that I have also done ✔️)
